The meal was over, coffee poured and drunk, pies and cookies rummaged, the leftovers were put up, dishes put in the dishwasher, and everything cleaned and tidy. Earl, Sharon, and Gordon had left, Gerry was out with her friends, and Randy had taken Susan home. Janet and I were alone in the house. “That was a wonderful meal,” I said as I sat back on the couch. “I think we should buy it like that every year.” “Are you going to be here every year?” “Unless you throw me out.” She leaned over to kiss me. “Those rum cookies were great!” I added. “It was a wonderful meal, wasn’t it?
