I woke up before my alarm.
For a few seconds, I lay there staring at the ceiling while Lilo snored beside my pillow, one little paw stretched across my shoulder like she was afraid I’d disappear if she let go.
“I wish I had your life,” I whispered, scratching behind her ears.
She opened one eye, yawned dramatically, then immediately fell back asleep.
Lucky dog.
My mind, on the other hand, refused to shut off.

That black SUV I’d noticed outside the parking garage.
I told myself I was letting everything get inside my head.
After all, the SUV hadn’t followed me.
Maybe someone had simply been waiting for a spouse who worked in the building.
