“How are you feeling, Granddad?” He’d sounded stronger. Maybe the nurse was wrong; maybe he’d be all right.
“A little better. I’m sorry I gave you a scare. Brad, this is your nephew, Kipp, spelled K-I-double-P.”
“How do you do, K-I-double-P?” His smile was warm. “You look a good deal like my sister and…You look like both of them.” He extended his hand.
“How do you do?” I took it, and before I realized it, he’d pulled me into a hug. “Um…”
“I’m glad to know my sister found a small measure of happiness.”
Not sure how to respond to that, I gave him a weak smile and backed away. “I see you’re in the army.” Oh, that was clever. What gave it away, Kipp? The uniform?
“Yes. Your father and I were in the same company. He was a good man. You’d have liked him.”
