The Letter That Shouldn't Exist
Emily Carter stood frozen in her doorway, utterly dumbstruck as she spotted an envelope resting right on her doormat. It hadn’t been there just moments before, and now it was like some strange object had just appeared from nowhere, drawing her in like a moth to a flame. The envelope was sleek and black—almost intimidating in its starkness. It felt like it weighed more than it should have, making the wooden floor creak beneath it. At first glance, Emily thought it might be fancy, like the kind of thing you’d pull out of a luxury store. But then she sighed; nice things didn’t just show up on her doorstep. Usually, it was bills she couldn’t pay or unwanted flayer, begging for donations she didn’t have to give. As the late afternoon sun spilled into her hallway, it caught the shiny, silver lettering on the front of the envelope and her heart skipped a beat when she saw her name—Emily Carter. But there was no stamp, no return address, nothing that hinted at who sent it or how it even got there. The sudden chill creeping up her spine made her wonder if it had been hand-delivered by someone she didn’t want to meet. She swallowed hard, feeling her skin prickle. Whatever it was, it wasn’t good. Curiosity got the better of her, so she bent down carefully to pick it up, half expecting it to bite her just for touching it. The envelope was heavier than it looked, made of thick, buttery paper that smelled faintly of something sharp—was it money or power? She couldn’t tell. With shaky fingers, she slid her nail under the seal and opened the card inside. The message was simple and precise. > You are expected at the Blackwood Gala. > A car will collect you at 8 PM. > Be ready. No need to RSVP, no guidelines, and definitely no signature. Just an order thrown at her like a stone. As dread settled in her stomach, she tossed the card onto her cluttered kitchen table. It landed on top of a mess that looked like a graveyard of overdue bills and rejection letters that hadn’t seen the light of day. She poured herself a glass of water, her hands trembling. The eviction notice glaring from the fridge felt like it was mocking her alongside her phone, which buzzed with spam calls and the blank job board glaring at her from the laptop screen. Nothing was going right. She had no job, no hopes for the future, and felt backed into a corner with no way out. And all the while, the clock ticked on remorselessly, edging closer to 8 PM. --- A Decision Born of Desperation At 7:50 PM, Emily stood at her window, anxiously watching a sleek black car roll to a stop right outside. A well-dressed driver sprang out of the car and looked up at her window, his expression unreadable and serious. Panic hit, clawing at her insides. She felt every instinct scream at her to not go anywhere with this stranger. But then she thought, what choice did she really have? Everything she’d fought for seemed to be crumbling around her. The city had been cruel, chewing her up and spitting her out like she never mattered in the first place. What seemed like constant battles went unnoticed by everyone, and she was exhausted. If Adrian Blackwood wanted her to show up like some pawn on his chessboard, then so be it. Without further thought, she grabbed her jacket and slipped on her best pair of heels, even if they were starting to show their age. Without turning back, she walked out the door, feeling a mix of dread and determination. --- The Blackwood Gala When she arrived at Blackwood Tower, she felt dwarfed by its towering presence, rising sharply into the sky as if it were a knife cutting through the clouds. The car brought her right up to the entrance, where elegantly dressed men and women moved like they belonged in this lavish setting, floating on the red carpet as though they were royalty. As Emily stepped out of the car, she fought the urge to stare. The lobby was all glass and polished marble, reflecting her tense expression as if to highlight her nerves. A woman dressed in a dark gown glanced at the list and waved her through without a word. Inside, the ballroom was a stunning sight: golden chandeliers hanging from an artistically painted ceiling lit up a sea of guests who glittered under the lights. The sound of a string quartet played gently in the background, trying to mask the quiet hum of chatter and the clinking of champagne glasses. Emily felt completely out of place, as if she had washed up on a perfect beach, while everyone else glimmered like treasures. But then, something shifted in the air—like the stillness before a storm. She turned, and that’s when she saw him. --- The Ice King Himself Adrian Blackwood was perched at the top of a small staircase, taking in the entire room like a general sizing up his troops. He looked sharp in his fitted black suit, at all angles, with dark hair cut close to his head, and a face that seemed tailor-made for the business world. His gaze locked onto hers like a spotlight, and for a second, the number of guests, the noise, and everything else faded away. He began to walk toward her, the crowd naturally parting as if creating a path just for him. When he finally reached her, he didn’t smile or extend a hand, merely studying her as if she were a puzzle he aimed to figure out. “Miss Carter,” he greeted, his low voice smooth, hinting at danger. “Mr. Blackwood,” she replied, forcing herself to hold his gaze. “You came,” he stated, almost like it was a surprise. “I wasn’t really given a choice,” she shot back, her nerves hanging on each word. For a moment, a hint of amusement flickered in his dark eyes. Almost. “No, you weren’t,” he agreed, the calmness in his tone only increasing her tension. “What exactly do you want with me?” Emily asked, her throat dry and tense. He leaned in slightly, close enough for her to catch a whiff of an expensive cologne mixed with danger. “Because you’re the only person in this room I can trust,” he whispered just as the lights flickered off. --- The Shot Heard 'Round the Room Suddenly, darkness enveloped the ballroom. A chilling silence took over, leaving everyone frozen in surprise. Then, a gunshot shattered the stillness. The sound roared through the space like an explosion. Someone screamed, glass shattered, and chaos erupted everywhere. Emily stayed still, paralyzed—completely at a loss for what to do in the dark. And then, a firm grip on her wrist jolted her back to reality. Adrian’s voice sliced through the panic. “Run.” She stumbled after him as he tightly held her hand, pulling her away from the rising chaos. People collided, heels broke, and bodies crashed into tables as they scrambled to escape. It felt like a war zone on that slick marble floor. Another gunshot echoed closer—more imminent. “Stay low!” Adrian commanded as they neared a side door. He slammed his shoulder into it, forcing it open. They tumbled into a dim service hallway, the heavy door slamming shut behind them, which muffled the sounds of chaos outside. Her heart raced wildly in her chest, pounding so hard it felt like it was going to burst. “What the hell just happened?” she asked breathlessly. Adrian turned to her, his face a mix of anger and determination. “Welcome to reality, Miss Carter,” he answered, a serious edge in his voice. “The type you can’t just walk away from anymore.” Before she could process it all, a loud thud impacted the door behind them. Someone was coming—someone who was ready to make sure they didn’t leave. --- End of chapter one.
