Kayla's POV
"Ugh!" I exclaimed for the umpteenth time as I poured more liquid from the coffee maker into a mug I held firmly between my fingers.
"Are you sure you don't want me to do that for you, your Highness?!" A maid came up behind me and asked, her fingers intertwined as they rested on her polka-dotted apron.
I spun around and gave her a flat look before letting out a brief yawn. "I thought I told you—I don't need any help, I can handle things on my own." My tone with her was just as flat as my visage.
"Yes ma'am." She said a bit awkwardly and took a bow before hurriedly making her way out of the kitchen.
I rolled my eyes inside my head and reached for the mug on the counter, raising it gently to my lips so as not to spill its contents. I pouted my lips and blew air atop the brim of the hot coffee to cool it down a bit before taking a sip from the mug.
Ahhh...very heavy, just how I like my morning coffee to be. I took another sip, waiting for the coffee to work its wonders on my headache like it always did. I took another sip, placed the coffee back onto the counter and shut my eyes tight. The front of my head still throbbed from the headache.
"What do I do now, how do I get rid of this headache?!" I asked myself, clutching the counter so hard that my knuckles turned white.
"Maybe you should come back to bed with me!" A voice resounded in my head. I shot my eyes open immediately to see Alpha Harlem towering over me. I felt my heart skip a beat and my face lit up in a broad smile.
"Harlem..." I said a bit too excitedly at the sight of my mate, "I thought you were still asleep." I said and reached in for a hug. He pulled me in and wrapped his arms around me, gently running his coarse fingers through my hair, which sent tingling sensations down my spine until they got to my core.
"Well I was, but then I woke up when I couldn't feel your breath anymore on my face." He said teasingly.
"Oh c'mon now!" I started withdrawing from him, but my hands were still shrouded around his waist, "I don't always cuddle you throughout the night do I?"
"You don't and that's the problem here." He said, revealing his perfect dentition to me.
In all my years of existence, I have never seen a man with a smile as perfect as my husband's, or perhaps anyone else's for that matter. His dentition was flawless, or probably others shared the same features as him, and I was just tripping.
"Come back to bed with me." He said it in the form of a plea, but perceived it to be an order at the same time.
"But..." I wanted to protest and, at the same time, I wanted him to resist my protest, but to my surprise, he maintained silence and waited for me to spew whatever excuse I wanted to conjure up so I wouldn't go back to bed with him.
I had no reason not to go back to our chambers with him and I couldn't come up with any. I stood there frozen, watching him, watching me fret with a broad grin on his face. His smiles did things to me that I couldn't explain, made me say things that made me feel stupid after I've had deep contemplation.
"Go on, tell me...tell me why you don't want to come back to bed with me." His teasings persisted.
I was still trying to come up with something when I felt his warm lips crash in on mine. "Go on, tell me." He muttered, his breath hot against my lips.
"Sorry to interrupt Your Highness, but you have a visitor!"
'Really now, at this time, out of all the moments around the clock, a stupid guard chose to invade during this one!' I screamed inside my head.
My face cringed in irritation as my husband withdrew from me and turned around to look at the guard standing behind us, pretending to look into a corner and not at us.
"Pitiful!" I scoffed at him, as if I wasn't aware that he must have been standing there for a long time and had taken in enough of us to feed his hungry eyes.
"Who is it, Patrick?!" Harlem asked calmly, but I could make out the slight irritation in his voice. I wasn't the only one pained by the guard's interruption.
"It's...it's her Majesty's twin sister." The guard said, finally turning his head to fix his gaze on us.
"Kiana?" My eyes bulged. "Where is she?" I asked, walking past Harlem and toward the guard.
"She's right outside!" The guard responded.
"Take me to her!" I let out. I hadn't seen Kiana for....for heaven's knows how long. But why didn't she call to let me know that she was coming over or was this some kind of surprise she had planned out? Well, whichever it was, I missed her and couldn't wait to see her.
Walking behind the guard was slowing me down when I could just walk right past him and navigate my way to where she was; that was exactly what I did. I didn't wait to behold the look of surprise on the guard's face when I started sprinting the moment I saw my twin just a short distance away from me.
"Kiana, that is really you, isn't it?" I called out. I could make out the smile on her features as she shook her head and began walking toward me. We closed the distance between us and I stood for a moment to stare at her before I threw my hands around her and pulled her into a warm embrace.
"It's been too long, Kayla." Kiana let out against my shoulders.
"Yes, it has!" I responded before breaking the hug.
