The Next Step

Ava I've been staring at my feet in my bedroom for a good 10 minutes, looking at the laces of my white converse thinking maybe I should tie them again or hide the laces, last thing I need to do is fall on my face today. I mean it's not hard, for a dancer I don't get how one can be so graceful and in time with a routine but trip over air just walking down the street. "It's going to be fine Ave" I jump at the sound of Kaidens low voice and whirl around to face him leaning in the door way. "That's okay for you to say, you never seem to have any trouble making friends besides you graduate at the end of this year and the year is already half way finished." I muffle out as I look at my feet again. A smug smile slowly appears on his face "True and true then the real fun begins College, girls, parties and more girls. There might be some learning I guess." He chuckles then strides over and sits on my bed. "Oh Ave you're only 2 years behind me look at it that way and who knows what will happen today you might meet some fellow dance buddies. Like Mom used to say you just need to look for the positives." He then proceeds to walk over to me and tussle my hair "Ughhh" I groan "Could you be any more annoying." He then looks at me all humor gone "Yes but seriously I'll be here today if you need me just find me okay?" "Okay, now can you leave so I can finish getting ready?" He starts to walk out of the room but then stops and looks at me "You look fine maybe fix your hair though." He laughs as I throw a pillow at his face "Get out Kaiden!" "Oh keep a look out for any good looking girls in any of your classes help your brother out." He yells from the hallway. "I don't think you need any help being a sleeze you can manage that well on your own." I yell back at him. Lord help the girl that ever sticks with him. In all facts he didn't need my help he was pretty good at getting girls I mean they pretty much go all goo goo eyes as soon as they see him which he takes advantage of. He is a bit of a mix he got moms dark hair and beige skin tone and got dads brown eyes and square jawline. Me on the other hand I'm another version of mom everyone says but I'm no where near as beautiful as she was, she had gorgeous deep blue eyes and dark brown wavy hair never out of place. Its will be 4 months tomorrow since the accident, how a small grain of time can be the difference between life and death if a few seconds longer or a few less would the outcome be the same? After a date night out together on the way home on the familiar road they have taken so many times before a deer ran onto the road causing dad to swerve and hit an on coming tree. But it wasn't the deer that killed them neither was hitting the tree it propelled the car rolling it down past below the bridge and into the river and there they sat trapped until the car sunk into the cold shallows and no one to help until it was too late. I turn to the mirror trying to fix my hair up as best I could. I eventually just give up and throw it into a ponytail. This will have to do plain jane is best today white T and high waisted jeans if anything I want to blend in being the new girl stands out enough. I guess I'm pretty in shape lucky only because of dancing I'd now prefer my free time in my room binge watching some tv show or murder mystery. I take one last look in the mirror and sigh out a deep breath "Today is a new day"
