Chapter 1
ASTER The sun was peaking through the crack of the blinds of Aster's bedroom, signaling the day was beginning and to get up. Groaning as the rays of sunshine hit her eyelids, she pulled her hand up to her face rubbing the sleep from her eyes. Letting out a sigh she opened her eyes and rolled over to grab her phone. 7 o'clock in the morning, the same time as always she woke up. She was never one to sleep in. Sitting up in her bed and pushing the warmth of the blankets off her, she got goosebumps almost immediately. Yawning and stretching her limbs she swung her legs off the bed and made her way to the bathroom for a shower. Turning it to as hot as her skin could handle she jumped in. her long golden locks turning brown from being wet, the floral soap she used permutating the air. She loved her orange and cherry shampoo, reminding her of summer year-round. Shutting off the water she wrapped her hair in a towel squeezing as much water out of it before moving to dry off her body. Wrapping the towel around her she continued her morning routine, brushing her teeth and blowing her hair dry. Moving to her dresser she grabbed her undergarments and outfit for the day. A black tank top and jean shorts. Her everyday attire for work. Looking in the mirror before going for the fridge, She stood 5’7” and was a nice athletic physique that she kept up since high school. Nodding at herself she slipped out of her room going to the kitchen of her one-bedroom apartment. Her father had offered her to stay home with him, but she needed her own freedom. To compromise, she moved in here only a few miles away from him. However, the town they lived in wasn't all that big, everyone only lived a few miles from each other. She grabbed a cold energy drink from the fridge before grabbing her purse from the counter. Pulling her keys out she set out the front door locking it behind her. Off to work like every other person in town. Though she loved her job, she all but owned the most popular spot in town. Well, her dad Marty owned the bar but she had been working there since she graduated four years ago. She took business and fiance classes in school so that her dad knew she was serious about taking over the business one day. Though this was one of two businesses Marty own. He also was the best mechanic in town. Since she started working there he was able to take a step back and focus on his auto shop business. Hopping into her old Toyota Camry she pulled out of her apartment complex parking lot. It was a short drive to the bar, no more than ten minutes and a few lights. Parking her car right up front of the building. Shutting off the engine and locking her car behind her pushing the button on her key fob. She found the key on her key ring and unlocked the front door to the bar. She flicked on the light and started on her opening list of to-dos. She was open for business at 10 am, she had checked her beer kegs, took the liquor inventory, get the registers ready were just the start. She made sure the kitchen equipment was clean and turned on for the cook who showed up an hour after her. She only had one bartender on the schedule to come in for the day shift with her. It was always slower, so to keep payroll in the black she didn't need more than one person to help her work the bar during the day. Mandy was another young girl only two years younger than Aster, she was bubbly and flirtatious with the customers. Which helped lined her pockets with tips every day. She was great at reading people and that helped her make a terrific bartender. Aster knew her back from school, she was a sweet girl and an even sweeter talker. It caused her some trouble from time to time, which is how they became friends. Aster was the one to be there to get her out of it. Like a big sister would do. As kind and sweet as Aster could be, she had a fight in her that would scare any man who wasn't careful. Something her dad made sure to teach her since she was a little girl, her stubbornness she just inherited from being his daughter. Both girls were beautiful in their own right, Mandy had brown eyes, thick long raven black hair, and more pronounced curves. Compared to Aster's slim toned body, with her deep ocean blue eyes and shoulder-length golden blonde hair. Mandy strolled into work just a few minutes before they were officially opened. Aster was pulling the chairs off the tables when she heard her enter. “Cutting close to being late Mandy” she sighed setting the last chair down. “Yeah babes i know, im sorry. Had an alarm malfunction” Mandy replied sheepishly holding up her arms. “Oh, im sure that's what it was.” Aster raised an eyebrow at her friend with a smirk on her face. “Im sure it was nothing to do with Johnny chatting you up all night,” she said walking across the room to go behind the bar. “Exactly he didn't know how to work the alarm clock” She smiled sheepishly following Aster behind the bar to punch in for work. “Hey George!” she shouted to the kitchen. George was a retired cop who was close to Aster's father, a sweet old man who still had a lot of life to live. He was tall; over 6 foot, and still in great shape, with salt and peppered hair, he always slicked back. He was a silver fox by all sense of the term. Though he was like a second father to Aster and Mandy. “mornin’! “George shouted over all the equipment from the kitchen. Aster now seeing her clocked in gave her the all to known look. The look that said, you're now at work. She didn't want to be the hard ass but she knew that to run a successful business, you have to separate friendship when working. Seeing as they just opened and would only get the regulars from town. A mix of the old retired folks, the people getting off the few graveyard shifts, and a few freshly turned twenty-one-year-olds. Aster went back to the office to go over the books and place the weekly order they would need for restocking. After an hour she came out of the office and took her spot behind the bar, this was her favorite position in the bar. She loved being able to talk to customers and make cocktails. Even if this town was beer and shot kind of place. She stood behind the bar with Mandy chatting with the few old-timers….
