The Day That Was Not To Be

MEANWHILE...

Anjana heads straight to Ravi"s house. There Ravi reveals everything that he has unearthed with the help of Gayathri to a shocked, emotionally confused and angry Anjana.

Ravi: There is no use in getting angry now, Anju. Save that energy for the future. Now our priority is to plan their elimination. Don’t you want to take revenge on them who have trapped and destroyed many innocent people like you?

Anjana (controlling herself, but still shaking with anger): Yes, certainly, yes. Do you have a meticulous plan for this as you had for my escape?

Ravi: Let us see. Actually, Gayathri is the planner. She planned for your escape. That letter, supposedly written by me is actually conceived and drafted by her. Gayathri may have some thorough plans for your future, as well. But she has warned me not to carry my mobile phone when I accompany you to accomplish our further motives.

Anjana (calmly): Who is Gayathri? And what is wrong in carrying your mobile phone?

Ravi (with a smile): Will introduce her later, (touching Anjana"s hand) after all this mess is cleared. She told that the police could easily retrieve my location through my mobile phone and we might be trapped during the investigations.

Anjana (curious): Oh! That’s why! Now what"s the plan?

Ravi : We first need to find a public telephone booth, which doesn"t a have a CCTV nearby.

CUT TO THE MENTAL HOSPITAL

The forensic report is ready and the police are now convinced that Vipul did try to make Anjana inactive in anticipation of the court order.

After regaining consciousness, Vipul futilely argues with the police against this. But they are in no mood to listen to him.

Vipul is arrested for attacking Anjana and trying to make her life illegally inactive. He further lands into more troubles as he had ordered the CCTV cameras to be switched off and asked the attending nurses to wait outside.

The security officials and the nurses record their respective statements.

On hearing about Anjana’s disappearance, Shrikar rushes to the hospital to assess the situation.

The nurse tells him that there has been no progress in tracing her whereabouts. She also informs him about the revelation of Vipul"s misdeeds and his consequent arrest. Shrikar gets panicky as he and Vipul are partners in crime. Shrikar is now extremely desperate to see Anjana, so that he can sweet talk her into pleading with the police that Vipul is innocent.

Expecting that Anjana will be at home, he frantically drives back home. But to his dismay, she is not there. He keeps on waiting as well as dialling all their contacts asking for Anjana; but to no avail. As he starts losing even the last ray of hope, his phone rings and flashes an unsaved number. Shrikar is relieved to hear Anjana"s voice at the other end. He begs her to return to the hospital.

But Anjana cries helplessly and tells Shrikar that she doesn"t want to go back and surrender at the hospital. Shrikar assures her that the court would release her now as she has convincingly proved her smartness and mental health. But still she insists that she would first meet him and then follow him to the hospital for surrendering. A ground near the hospital is selected for this rendezvous of theirs!

AT THE GROUND NEAR THE MENTAL HOSPITAL

Shrikar comes to the place as told by Anjana. But he finds nobody there. Hence he calls Deepa to report about his whereabouts.

Shrikar (in a husky tone): Hey, I have reached here; but she is yet to reach.

Deepa (commandingly): Wait for her. Make sure that she returns to the hospital. Charm her into declaring that Vipul is innocent.

Shrikar hears the footsteps of someone approaching.

Shrikar (whisperingly): Hey, will call you later. Someone"s coming.

And he hangs up the phone.

Anjana comes crying into Shrikar"s arms and continues to cry profusely. Shrikar tries to console her.

Anjana stops crying, looks at him with extreme hatred. Before Shrikar could assess the situation, Ravi jumps at Shrikar from the shadows and overpowers him. Shrikar is now handcuffed.

Ravi flashes out a gun to stop Shrikar from creating a scene. Shrikar remains silent and is shaking with fear.

Anjana (angrily): Shrikar, stop trembling. If you cooperate, we are not going to hurt you. That"s our plan.

Ravi (angrily): We know what you, Deepa and Vipul have done... to Anju and many others. How could you people be so inhuman?

Anjana(angry and determined): Ravi, we don"t have time to waste. Let"s execute our plan.

Shrikar(desperately): Please don"t execute any dreadful plans. Whatever you want, I am ready to give.

Ravi(switching on the recording on his mobile): As you say, Sir. What we want is this: formally own up all the crimes which you people have committed till date. Then you can go unharmed from here.

SHRIKAR BECOMES SILENT AND STARTS CRYING.

Anjana: No use persuading, Ravi. Let us go according to our plans.

Ravi places his gun against Shrikar"s temple.

Shrikar(crying heavily): No, no, no. Please don"t shoot me. What do you want of me at this point? Just tell me.

Anjana(angrily): Keep quiet, you bastard.

Ravi(seriously): Then tell us. How did you create those hallucinations to render Anjana crazy?

Shrikar(helplessly): If I say that, would you let me go?

Anjana(pretending to seduce Shrikar by brushing his lips with her fingers): Yes darling, but of course.

Shrikar (confesses): I am sorry to say this, but it has been very easy to fool you, Anju.

Anjana (bitterly): Don"t dare to call me by that name, you asshole.

Ravi (pressing the gun against Shrikar"s temple): Shrikar, just come to the point.

Shrikar: See, we used to work for the Virtual Reality department and I am an expert on that. I have my personal customized virtual reality apparatus which can display pre recorded videos virtually, as though it"s happening live, without even the viewing person, observing the presence of my innovation. So Anjana thought that, all that was happening, was happening right there.

Ravi (surprised): But Anju too worked for the same department. (Turning to Anjana)How could you turn a blind eye to such a perspective?

Anjana (shocked): I can"t help Ravi, but accept the truth that I was blinded by his love then and... wait a minute... this bastard had sown the seeds of doubt by introducing or purposefully inducing Deepa in to my mind that day. This bastard knew that I will get paranoid.

Ravi (with doubt): Wait a second... How come the police force and the dog squad failed to unearth your so called innovative equipments?

Shrikar (trying to hide his wry smile): Vipul was always there to cover up. He was even responsible to unlock the door through which Anjana saw me killing Deepa and Ayaan and advancing towards her. So the police force never got an inkling about our plans.

Anjana (probing): Oh, so you and Deepa used to make love for real in order to hurt my feelings. And what about Vipul and my sudden change in behaviour at the hospital? How can you concoct such impossible feats?

Shrikar (helplessly looking at both): Vipul used to inject you with anger inducing drugs; and I actually never turned up for the breakfast after the first few days.

Anjana (despising): I wish I could slit your throat. Why the hell did you do all these things to me?

Shrikar (trying to be more helpful): First, we started these for the greed of money. Later on we got addicted to these procedures. But I still don"t understand why you haven’t hit me yet.

Ravi (despising): You suckers have got great brains; I should admit that.

Shrikar (hopefully): Now would you guys keep your word and let me go free?

Anjana (with hatred): Not before freeing you from your soul.

Shrikar looks at Ravi with horror. But Ravi brushes aside Anjana with a laughter:

Ravi: HA... ha... ha... Anju, you go and surrender at the hospital. I will take care of him. (Turning to Shrikar) Won’t you be happy taking me on a tour to your new farm house?

Shrikar (in a dilemma and tensed): Yes... yes... yes... Why not? Please, let"s go.

Once Anjana leaves for the hospital, Shrikar and Ravi set out for the farmhouse that Deepa and Shrikar have recently purchased.

Ravi, being well versed with the layout of the farmhouse, takes Shrikar straight to the poolside and makes him drink alcohol at gun point. Once the alcohol gets on to Shrikar, Ravi releases him from the handcuffs. Ravi sees to it that Shrikar drinks heavily enough to lose his physical coordination. Then Ravi guides him to the ridge of the pool and asks him to jump into it. Shrikar jumps and drowns to his end.

Meanwhile Ravi very carefully takes a cigarette packet from his pocket, takes out the lonely cigarette out and lights it with the so-called gun he is carrying, which actually is nothing more than a cigarette lighter. He contentedly smiles looking at the floating dead body while smoking very carefully, putting the residual ash back into the empty packet.

While smoking he mimics Shrikar: “But I still don"t understand why you haven’t hit me yet.”

-- You fool, we didn"t want to leave any proof.

He then tucks the finished cigarette back in to the packet and places the packet back into his pocket. And then he leaves the farmhouse for good.
