[Scene 1: The Morning After the Party]
(The school courtyard is filled with students chatting, laughing, and walking between classes. Clara and Lacy are sitting on a bench near the school’s entrance, sipping their drinks. Clara seems upbeat, recounting the events of the party, but Lacy is distant, her gaze drifting over the crowd.)
Clara: (laughing) I still can’t believe I jumped into the pool in my dress. I must’ve looked ridiculous.
Lacy: (absentmindedly) Yeah, you looked amazing, Clara.
Clara: (teasing) Oh, come on! Don’t tell me you didn’t think I was a little crazy.
(Lacy doesn’t respond immediately, her fingers tracing the edge of her cup.)
Clara: (concerned) Hey, you okay? You seem off today.
Lacy: (forcing a smile) Oh, yeah, I’m fine. Just tired, I guess.
Clara: (looking closely) Lacy, talk to me. You’ve been acting weird since last night.
Lacy: (pausing, then sighing) It’s just… Jake.
Clara: (curious) What about Jake?
Lacy: (looking away) After you saved me, he wouldn’t stop talking about how amazing you were. He couldn’t stop mentioning it.
Clara: (laughing nervously) Well, I wasn’t doing anything special, Lacy. I just—
Lacy: (cutting her off) No, Clara, you don’t get it. He wasn’t just talking about how brave you were. He… he looked at you differently. Like… like he was admiring you.
(Clara’s face falls, unsure of how to respond. She watches Lacy, whose tone is growing more distant.)
Clara: (softly) Lacy, I didn’t mean to make him feel that way. I was just trying to help you.
Lacy: (nodding, but clearly hurt) I know. But the way he kept looking at you… It made me feel like maybe he wasn’t looking at me the same way anymore.
Clara: (gently) You know he loves you, right? He’s with you. That hasn’t changed.
(Lacy shakes her head, her gaze distant as she looks over at Jake, who’s standing near the school building, chatting with some other students.)
Lacy: (quietly) I don’t know. It just feels different now. Like… he’s starting to notice you more than he notices me.
Clara: (reaching for Lacy’s hand) That’s not true. Please don’t think that way. You’re my best friend. I would never do anything to hurt you.
Lacy: (looking at Clara) I know you wouldn’t, but it’s hard when he keeps looking at you like that.
(The two sit in silence for a moment, Clara squeezing Lacy’s hand reassuringly.)
[Scene 2: Jake’s Growing Affection for Clara]
(Later that day, Clara is walking to her locker when Jake approaches her. He looks a little nervous, as if he’s unsure how to act around her after everything that happened at the party.)
Jake: (tentatively) Hey, Clara.
Clara: (smiling) Hey, Jake. Everything good?
Jake: (pauses) Yeah, everything’s fine. I just… I wanted to talk to you.
(Clara’s smile fades a little as she senses the serious tone in his voice.)
Clara: (carefully) What’s going on, Jake?
Jake: (nervously) I just wanted to thank you again for what you did last night. You didn’t even hesitate to jump in and save Lacy. You were incredible.
Clara: (shrugging) I just did what anyone would have done. She’s my friend.
Jake: (softly) You’re different, Clara. Most people wouldn’t have risked it. You were calm, you didn’t hesitate. I can’t stop thinking about how… amazing that was.
Clara: (uneasy) Jake, I really appreciate that you’re grateful, but…
Jake: (cutting her off) No, it’s not just that. You’re not like other people, Clara. There’s something about you that stands out.
(Clara feels a pang of discomfort but hides it with a smile, trying to deflect the conversation.)
Clara: (laughing nervously) You’re just saying that because I saved Lacy.
Jake: (seriously) It’s more than that. It’s the way you carry yourself. The way you don’t let things affect you. I admire that.
(Clara tries to keep the conversation light, but the tension between them is palpable. Jake is looking at her with an intensity that makes her uneasy.)
Clara: (gently) I’m glad you’re grateful, Jake, but I think Lacy needs you right now. She’s been through a lot.
(Jake’s expression falters for a moment, but he quickly recovers.)
Jake: (softly) I know. I’m just… I don’t know. I’ve been thinking a lot about you, Clara. You’re different from anyone I’ve ever met.
(Clara feels her heart race, but she forces a smile, trying to keep the conversation from going further.)
Clara: (lightly) Well, I’m just me, Jake. Nothing special.
Jake: (shaking his head) You’re wrong. You’re something special.
(Clara feels a knot form in her stomach. She doesn’t know what to say, but she’s grateful when the bell rings, signaling the end of the class change.)
Clara: (quickly) Anyway, I’ve got to go. I’ll see you later, Jake.
(Jake watches her leave, his eyes full of longing, but Clara doesn’t see it as she hurries off toward her next class.)
[Scene 3: Lacy’s Growing Doubts]
(Later that afternoon, Clara and Lacy are sitting in their favorite spot under the large oak tree by the school entrance. Lacy is quiet, still lost in her thoughts, and Clara is growing more concerned.)
Clara: (tentatively) Lacy, talk to me. What’s going on? You’ve been acting weird all day.
Lacy: (sighing) I don’t know, Clara. It’s just… Jake has been acting strange lately. He’s been talking about you a lot more, and it’s not just about the party. He’s been looking at you differently.
Clara: (reassuringly) Lacy, you’re overthinking this. Jake loves you.
Lacy: (shaking her head) I don’t know. The way he looks at you—it’s like he’s seeing you in a way he never saw me.
(Clara’s stomach churns as she realizes how much Lacy is hurting. She pulls Lacy into a hug, holding her close.)
Clara: (softly) I swear, Lacy. I’m not trying to take Jake away from you. I’m your friend, and that’s all I’ve ever been.
(Lacy pulls back, wiping away a tear.)
Lacy: (quietly) I know. It’s just hard to see.
(Clara looks at Lacy, understanding the pain her friend is going through. She wishes she could fix it, but she knows there’s nothing more she can do.)
