“Red light,” Zane said quietly enough not to alarm the girls but loud enough to get my attention. I hit the brakes just in time, immediately glancing at the girls in the rearview mirror.
“Everyone okay?” I asked.
“Again, again!” Lila chanted and all three of them giggled. The sound settled me.
“Thanks,” I muttered in Zane’s direction once the girls returned to their game of “I Spy”. He nodded once in acknowledgment, catching my eye and holding my gaze for an extra beat. Despite his typical silence, I understood the question in his look.
Are you okay?
I tore my gaze away, back to the road as the light turned green. Too embarrassed to admit he was questioning me with good reason.
I couldn’t afford to be this distracted while driving. Especially with the girls in the backseat.
