Trevor’S POV
When news of our Father’s passing came, I didn’t know how to feel. We had known for years that the man was getting old and that his time would come eventually. It was a fact of life, and we had been raised to accept it.
And so when we arrived, the first place we went to was our father’s office. Silent and stoic, each of us stood lost in their own thoughts and memories of the man who had raised us and led our pack for so many years.
Hudson ran his hand over Dad’s desk, his eyes welling up with emotion but he didn’t let them gather for long before they disappeared. “He was a good man,” he said quietly.
Damon and I nodded in agreement, his own voice thick with emotion. “Yeah, he was. The pack won’t be the same without him.”
I had always been the most reserved out of the three of us, I simply stood in the corner, my gaze fixed on a family portrait hanging on the wall. I didn’t say anything, but my hands were clenched into fists.
During the funeral ceremony, we all stood in front of our father’s coffin, our expressions blank as we listened to the eulogy being read. We didn’t shed a tear, didn’t even flinch as the pack members around wept openly.
It was an unspoken understanding between us brothers that we were devastated by our father’s death, but we couldn’t let our emotions get the best of us. Now we had a responsibility to the pack, and we couldn’t let ourselves break and be less than we were taught to be; brave, strong, emotionless in most cases. We simply couldn’t let grief hold us back.
We stood impassive; void of any emotion, our faces blank as the funeral ceremony came to an end. We were attending the service to honour our father, the late Alpha of Black Sun Pack, but we couldn’t help but feel the weight of fate on our shoulders.
Not long after the service ended, the Elders of the pack approached us with solemn expressions. “We need to talk to you,” Elder Thomas said, his voice low.
In my head, I rolled my eyes already getting an irritated feeling about the conversation about to happen.
My brothers sensing the feeling exchanged a look with me, but we followed the Elders to a secluded room nonetheless. I knew that something important was about to be discussed but I don’t know if I was going to like it.
Once we were all seated, Elder Thomas cleared his throat and began to speak. “As you know, the title of Alpha now belongs to you. But as the rules require, you must get a mate before you take the mantle. Meanwhile the prophecy of the three of you having to share one mate still stands, which means you cannot accend the throne until you get one mate.”
“Isn’t there a way around this? The Alpha position cannot remain empty. Plus that could take some time to find the said mate and we don’t have it.” Hudson argued. Making me nod in agreement.
“You must make time,” Elder Thomas insisted. “The Alpha position is yours but I’m afraid you only have a few weeks to find a mate. As we all know, the throne cannot remain empty for long to avoid giving enemies a wrong picture.”
Damon leaned forward, his eyes flickering with interest. “And if we don’t fulfill this prophecy? What if we get mated to different mates? One month is too small of a time to search for the mate which the moon goddess has marked out as ours.” He said displeasingly.
“If you fail to do so, the title passes from your family. And your cousin will take over as Alpha and the title will continue in his family instead. The prophecy must be followed but the pack will not wait more than three weeks at most,” Elder Thomas said simply with a shrug.
My brothers and I exchanged tense glances. Not only was the prophecy ridiculous, the time frame given was absurd. How did they expect that we find our fated mate in a month?
It was also weird because we had never had to share something like this. Having a mate was to be a private thing between two people. But with this prophecy, my mate would have to be theirs and I honestly don’t know how I felt about it yet.
But looking at the way things are, we have no choice but to fulfil the prophecy if we wanted to retain our power and title as Alpha born. There was no way we were going to let our cousin take over.
That title was our birth right.
“Remember, a few weeks to find your mate,” Elder Thomas said again in an urgent one, breaking the silence.
We nodded grimly, knowing that we had a difficult task ahead of us.
As we remained seated, my mind reeling from the news of having to share a mate with my brothers. And I think they too weren’t comfortable with the idea.
After a minute of silence Hudson spoke up. “Why don’t we pick up where Dad left off. I’m sure there’s something to do to clear our minds. I’m getting a headache from this prophecy thing.”
“You’re right. Let’s start with the state of security around the pack.”
We left the office and walked down to where the Pack’s Safety and Security advisors office was. He welcomed us with a sad smile and gestured for us to seat.
After a brief exchange of pleasantries and condolences from the advisor, we got straight to the point.
“There was an incident outside the pack’s territory two days ago,” he began, his voice grave. “A few of our scouts encountered a rogue who had crossed into our territory without permission. We managed to capture her, and she has been in our cells ever since.”
Hudson leaned forward, his eyes intent on the advisor’s face. “What do you think her intentions are?” he asked.
The advisor hesitated, then spoke carefully. “We suspect that she may be a spy, sent by one of the rival packs to gather information about us.”
Damon frowned. “What have you been able to get out of her?” he asked.
The advisor’s expression grew grim. “Not much,” he admitted. “She’s insisting on her innocence, and she won’t give us any more information than that.”
I exchanged a glance with my brothers, then spoke decisively. “Have her escorted to the council hall,” I said. “My brothers and I will do the questioning ourselves.”
The advisor’s eyebrows shot up in surprise. “Are you sure that’s wise?” he asked. “She could be dangerous.”
“We can handle it. There’s three of us and one of her. I doubt she’ll be able to do anything,” Damon said, his voice steady and confident.
The advisor hesitated for a moment, then said, “Very well. I’ll have her brought up.”
We returned to the council hall and waited for the rogue to be brought.
Finally, the door to the office opened, and a guard escorted the rogue in, her hands bound behind her back. She was a small, wiry woman, with dark hair and she didn’t look like much.
I watched as she was in awe of her surroundings, taking in the large room.
We stood opposite of her. Damon spoke first, his eyes cold and calculating. “What’s your name?” he asked.
“Layla, Sir,” she whispered, clearly too frightened to speak.
Damon nodded. “Layla, why were you on our territory?”
She sighed, as if trying to build up her confidence. “I was just passing through,” she said. “I was only taking a break from walking for so long, I didn’t realise I was in a territory that belonged to a pack.”
Hudson leaned forward, his eyes fixed on hers. “Are you a spy?” he asked, his voice low and threatening.
Layla shook her head vigorously. “No, I swear it! I have no connection to any other pack!”
Hudson studied her carefully, then leaned back in his chair. “All right, let’s assume for a moment that you’re telling the truth,” he said. “What can you tell us about the other packs in the area? Who are their leaders, what are their weaknesses?”
She hesitated, then spoke carefully. “I don’t know anything, I swear it. I’ve never even left my pack until I left for good now. This is the only other pack I’ve ever been to.”
My brothers and I turned to each other trying to figure out what to do with her because from the aura she carried, we could tell she was an omega, and there was no way she was a spy. She just didn’t have what it took to be dangerous.
“So what do you guys think? I mean she’s innocent, the right thing would be to let her be on her way to where she was headed.” Hudson voiced quietly.
We’re currently huddled together at the corner of the room, discussing quietly.
“Or...” Damon started to say but turned to take a look at the girl before turning his head back to us, “we could choose her as a mate. We don’t have a month to go around searching when there’s so much to do here.” He said, I nodded in agreement.
“I say we pick her. Have her sign a contract to mate with us and be ours for a year.” I said. “She could bare us a heir as well, since we need one anyways.”
“Right, if she agrees, she can bear our pup. We’ll have an heir, prophecy fulfilled, problem solved.” Hudson chipped in.
When we concluded, we all turned to face her and approach her. “You left your pack and you don’t have a place to stay, do you?” I asked, my face blank while speaking first.
She looked at me with fear in her eyes, her body visibly shaking as she shook her head. “No I don’t, but-“ she started to say but I interrupted her.
“We’ll let you stay here in this pack but we want something from you. How would you be willing to sign a contract with us. To be our contract mate.”
Layla’s eyes widened in confusion “Our… as in, three of you?” she, voice filled with shock.”
“Yes, three. Mate with us and in exchange of being allowed to join our pack. But, you’ll have to produce an heir for us as well, and there’s some rewards attached to the deal.” I noted.
“What kind of rewards are we talking about?” she finally asked, trying to sound nonchalant but I could easily detect her curiosity.
“Well, we’ll take care of all your financial needs, of course. And we’ll make sure that you’re comfortable and happy during your time with us. We’ll also give you access to all our resources, so if there’s anything you need, we’ll be there to provide it for you,” Damon explained cutting in.
Layla nodded, considering his words carefully. “And how long do you expect me to stay with you all as your… mates?”
“Just for a year,” I assured her. “After you give birth to our child, you’re free to leave the pack. You’d be settled financially before leaving.”
Layla took a moment to think then nodded her head, surprising me by how fast she came to a conclusion. “All right,” she said finally. “I’ll sign the contract.”
Hudson hummed, looking relieved. “Great! We’ll have the contract drawn up and sent to you in no time. And don’t worry, we’ll take care of everything. In the meantime, we’ll take you to your bedroom.”
After walking Layla to her room, we all went back to our Father’s office.
I didn’t know about them but for some reason I felt a small mix of excitement about what was to come. But we needed to talk about the logistics of the situation.
“So,” Damon began, looking at us. “We need to decide how we’re going to handle our mate.”
Hudson nodded. “Right. We can’t all mate with her at once. It’ll be too overwhelming for her. Plus I think it’ll be weird for us too.”
I scratched my chin thoughtfully. “Perhaps we should take turns. One of us each night?”
Hudson seemed to like the idea because he nodded in agreement. “That’s a good idea. That way, we can all have a chance to bond with her individually.”
“Sounds fair,” Damon said, his face hard. “And as we get more comfortable with the situation, we can start alternating nights or trying different arrangements.”
It seemed like a good idea and a comfortable approach to handling the prophecy but then Hudson spoke up, his brow furrowed in concern.
“What if she can’t handle all of us?” he asked.
Damon and I looked at each other, knowing exactly what he was referring to. Layla was petite and slender, whereas the three of us were all larger and more muscular. It was a valid concern.
I put a reassuring hand on Hudson’s shoulder. “Well just have to be gentle with her, and we’ll take cues from her. If it seems like she’s struggling or uncomfortable, we’ll stop.”
Damon nodded in agreement. “And we’ll make sure to communicate with each other throughout the process, so we’re not overwhelming her.”
Hudson looked relieved, feeling more at ease. “Right. We’ll be cautious and attentive.”
We all sat in silence for a moment, contemplating the new dynamic that we were about to enter into. It was a bit daunting, but we all felt a sense of unity and purpose in it.
“But we have to be careful about how we tell the Elders. She’s not our true mate and if they find out, we’ll lose our title.” I voiced. Knowing this was something we needed to clear before we got found out.
Hudson perked up, as if a light bulb had appeared in his mind. “The contract has to include a non disclosure agreement.”
“Sounds good. Once she reads the contract and understands all that is involved, we should be good.” I explained.
I learned back in my cheer as I thought about what the future would hold for us all and how to make our plan a successful one.
