CHAPTER ONE: THE NIGHT THAT CALLS
Nocturne City felt different at night.
By day, it was loud, crowded, and predictable. But when the sun disappeared, something shifted. The streets grew quieter, the lights dimmer, and the shadows… deeper. Like they were hiding something.
Or watching.
Liora Hale felt it the moment she stepped outside.
She paused at her doorstep, her fingers tightening slightly around her jacket. The air wasn’t cold, but a chill still ran through her.
That feeling again.
It had been following her for days now. Not fear—no, it was something else. Something pulling at her from somewhere she couldn’t see.
“You’re overthinking,” she whispered, exhaling slowly.
Still… she didn’t go back inside.
Instead, she stepped forward.
The city buzzed faintly around her, but with every step she took, the noise faded. The streets became emptier. The lights flickered more often. And the pull inside her chest grew stronger.
She didn’t know where she was going.
Only that she needed to.
Eventually, she found herself standing at the edge of a narrow street she didn’t recognize. It was dim, quiet, and swallowed by shadows.
Liora hesitated.
“This is where I stop,” she murmured.
But her feet didn’t listen.
Step by step, she moved forward.
The deeper she went, the colder the air became. The silence thickened until even the distant sounds of the city disappeared.
And then—
She felt it.
A presence.
Not behind her.
Not in front.
Everywhere.
Her heart skipped.
Slowly, she turned, scanning the empty street.
Nothing.
No one.
But she wasn’t alone.
“Hello?” she called, her voice echoing slightly.
Silence answered.
She shook her head, almost laughing at herself. “Okay… this is creepy.”
“Dangerous place to wander alone.”
The voice came from the shadows ahead.
Low.
Calm.
Unfamiliar.
Liora’s breath caught as she looked up.
A figure stepped forward, slowly revealing himself under the faint glow of a streetlight.
A man.
Tall. Still. Watching her like he had been there all along.
Something about him made her chest tighten instantly.
It wasn’t just his appearance—though that alone was enough to make her pause. Dark hair, sharp features, and eyes that seemed too intense, too focused.
No.
It was something deeper.
Something not right.
“You always sneak up on people like that?” she asked, forcing her voice to stay steady.
“I didn’t sneak,” he replied calmly. “You walked into my path.”
His voice was controlled, almost emotionless—but there was something beneath it.
Something dangerous.
Liora crossed her arms slightly. “I didn’t realize this street belonged to you.”
A faint shift crossed his expression. Not quite a smile.
“Tonight, it does.”
That should’ve been her cue to leave.
It wasn’t.
“You shouldn’t be here,” he said.
“And you should?” she challenged.
“For now.”
Before she could respond, the air changed.
Sharp.
Cold.
Liora felt it immediately.
That presence again—but stronger.
Her breath caught as she glanced past him.
The shadows moved.
Not like shadows should.
Shapes formed in the darkness, shifting slowly as if deciding whether to step forward.
“What is that?” she whispered.
The man didn’t turn.
“Stay where you are.”
“What—”
But he was already moving.
Too fast.
One second he stood in front of her—
The next, he was several feet away, placing himself between her and the approaching shapes.
Liora’s eyes widened.
That wasn’t possible.
The figures stepped into the faint light.
And when she saw their eyes—
Her stomach dropped.
Glowing.
Not human.
“Okay…” she breathed, stepping back. “That’s not normal.”
“No,” he said quietly. “It isn’t.”
One of the creatures lunged.
Everything happened at once.
A blur of motion.
A sharp impact.
The creature was thrown back with a force that made no sense.
Liora gasped, pressing herself against the wall behind her.
The man didn’t hesitate.
He moved again—fast, precise, inhuman.
The creatures attacked together, but it didn’t matter. He met them head-on, every movement controlled, effortless.
Like he had done this before.
Many times.
Within moments—
It was over.
The street fell silent again.
Too silent.
The creatures were gone.
Or not moving.
She couldn’t tell.
All she knew was—
He was still standing.
Untouched.
Slowly… he turned to face her.
And when their eyes met—
Something inside her stilled.
There was no doubt now.
No confusion.
No denial.
He wasn’t human.
“Who are you?” she asked softly.
He studied her for a moment.
Like she was something unexpected.
Something dangerous in a way he didn’t understand.
Then—
“Someone you should stay away from.”
That should’ve been enough.
It should’ve made her run.
But it didn’t.
Because instead of stepping back—
Liora stepped closer.
Her heartbeat quickened, but not from fear.
From something else.
Something pulling her toward him.
“Then why,” she asked quietly, “does it feel like I shouldn’t?”
For the first time—
He didn’t answer.
A flicker of something crossed his expression. Gone too quickly to name.
And in that silence…
Something shifted.
Something neither of them could stop.
Because whether she understood it or not—
The night hadn’t just found her.
It had chosen her.
