Perhaps our eyes need to be washed by our tears once in a while so that we can see life with a clearer view again." -Alex Tan.
"Anha, I've waited too long, I even picked you up from school! Now tell me the dets," my mum reminds me, putting her phone aside. I sigh, taking a sip from my mango juice.
"Dets mum? Really?"
"What? That's what the kids say nowadays, right?"
I roll my eyes at that, taking a forkful of rice in my mouth. "There is nothing mum, we are just two p-"
"Don't talk with your mouth full," she warns me. I drink my juice and swallow.
"As I was saying, we are just two people who happened to go out as friends," I repeat my sentence. My mum gave me a face showing she wasn't buying it.
"Okay fine, it was perfect, there was candlelight dinner and everything!" I say dreamily, a sigh escaping my lips.
"So, did you guys kiss?" My mum asks excitedly, literally leaning in towards me with a wide grin plastered on her face. I blush at this, shaking my head.
"But your face says otherwise," she teases in a sing-song voice.
"We didn't kiss, and well not on the lips anyway."
"Aw this is so great, my daughter's first love," she says with a sigh. I pop my eyes out at that, "l-love?!"
"Love is a very strong word," I choke out.
"But you like him."
I blush at that. Do I actually like him? Well, I feel butterflies whenever I see him. He makes my heart race just by being with him. He makes me feel happy and even just staying around him makes my day.
Yup. I definitely like him.
Like, really, really, really like him.
Sure I've had tiny crushes but nothing like this. This wasn't a crush. It wasn't love, but it wasn't a small crush either.
"Aww, you're blushing!" She cooed, pinching my cheek. I slap her hand away, giving her a frown. "I need some sleep," I announced, trying to get away from her teasing. But of course, she stopped me and I failed miserably.
"Did you see him at school today?" She asks excitedly, I nod my head slowly.
"Are you guys like dating? What did he say?"
"Nope. As I said, we're just friends, now can I go to sleep," I groan. She gives me a look but lets me go.
I walk up the stairs two at a time and jump on my bed with a sigh.
Oh, sweet bed.
As soon as my eyes felt heavy with sleep, my phone ringtone blares through the room causing me to sit up abruptly. Who would call me at this time? Actually, who would call me at all?
I check the caller ID which shows that it is Alexis who's calling me. Picking up the phone, I adjust myself properly on the bed.
"Hello?"
"Hey, best frieendd!" Alexis' voice speaks through the phone speakers. I immediately smile, "well I figure by your voice your date was pretty awesome?"
"Not really," she says with a sigh, "he was horrible, kept on talking about soccer the whole date!"
I chuckle at that, "hottie at the mall not so hot anymore?"
"Anyway, enough about me. How was your date with Mr. Celebrity?" She asks me, making me blush as I picked my nails.
"It was okay."
"Really? Just okay? You went out with a freaking celebrity and that's all you have to say?"
"Okay, it was perfect! There was candlelight dinner, and we danced and-" I start rambling but I was cut short by Alexis who cut me off in the middle of my rant.
"Did you guys kiss?"
Why does everyone want to know that?
I clear my throat, "um no." I didn't want to tell her about our almost kiss, I did not feel comfortable telling her. I felt like it was private.
"What? I expected you guys to be dating by now!"
"We are just friends, Alexis."
She lets out a huge sigh, "why though? If you don't want him, I'll have him." She jokes but I still felt angry when she says that so I keep my mouth shut.
"Hey, Alex?"
"Mhm?"
"I gotta go get ready for work now, we'll see each other at school tomorrow, yeah?"
"Totally! Have fun at work!"
Who says that?
*********
"I'm so tired!" I complain, stretching myself when I accepted the bill from the last customer. Salma chuckles at this, removing her apron. I don't get why she's supposed to wear that but whatever.
"Girl, I feel you. All I want is pizza and my bed," she answers me, walking over to the girl's changing room. I follow her, opening my hair pin. "Same, I've been craving pizza hut."
"Wanna go out for an early dinner with me?" She asks me with a smile, removing her headscarf before tying it properly. I give her a smile, "why not?"
Salma was very charismatic and friendly, I felt comfortable with her immediately. We were very similar in many ways. Two major things we have in common is that we have a small circle, plus she loves books.
I tie my hair into a tight ponytail and together we walk out the changing room making our way out of the café, but we were stopped by Josh.
"You guys want to catch an early dinner with me? I'm hungry and I don't want to go alone. It's on me," he says, making me grin instantly at the last sentence.
"We were just making our way to pizza hut, you can come with," Salma answers for us. Josh follows us outside and opened his car, gesturing for us to enter.
Free dinner and a free ride? This must be my lucky day.
I sit behind and Salma sits in front, I quickly grab the aux cable and connected to my phone, trying to pick a song to play.
"Do you have ice cream man?" Josh asks me making me frown.
"What song is that?"
"You don't know ice cream man?" Josh asks a shocked expression covering his face.
"It's trap music, I take it you don't listen to those type of songs?" Salma asks me, making me nod my head.
Salma smiles happily, "I'm glad because I've been listening to his trap songs and I'm afraid I'm actually starting to like them."
Well, they seem close.
I chuckle at her look of horror and chose 'Shape of you' by Ed Sheeran. You can never go wrong with Ed Sheeran.
Salma starts singing happily while Josh groans. "This is what I get for going out with girls," he mutters under his breath, causing me to sing along with Salma, our voices completely covering Ed Sheeran's.
Josh finally pulls up at Pizza Hut's parking lot and switches off the car. He lets out a breath when we stopped singing.
"Finally. Peace."
I roll my eyes at his dramatic reaction before climbing out of the car and entering Pizza Hut.
After making our order and getting our food, we chat while eating until my phone rings, distracting our heated debate of what movie was better between the mortal instruments and divergent. Personally, I prefer divergent but Salma and Josh were against me, claiming that the mortal instruments are better.
I checked the caller ID only to see that it was Alec.
"Alec?"
Why is he always calling me at the most random times?
"You aren't answering my texts."
"Well duh. Maybe it's because I'm busy?" I answer him with an eye roll.
"With what?" He asks and I could actually see him rolling his eyes at that even though he is not in front of me.
"Hey! I could be busy. Maybe I was studying, or I had a late shift at work?" I frown, biting a piece of pizza. I noticed that Josh and Salma were both listening in on our conversation while they absentmindedly chew on their pizza. I cover the speaker so Alec wouldn't hear me, "what?"
They shrug in reply to acting innocent. I roll my eyes before removing my hand from the phone speaker.
"Summer?"
"Yeah, I'm here."
"What are you doing?"
"Eating?"
"See. You are not busy enough to not talk to me."
"Well I was, I am out with friends and I wasn't paying attention to my phone."
"Friends? What friends? I thought I was your friend."
"Well Alec, sorry to burst your bubble but Alexis, Salma and Josh are too," I reply him. Josh and Salma immediately look up at me when they hear their names.
"Who is Josh?"
"A friend."
"A friend? What friend? I thought I was your only guy friend."
I let out a sigh before facepalming myself.
"Alec, I gotta go, it's rude to talk on the phone when you're out with other people."
"Sum-" he starts but I hung up on him.
"Your boyfriend?" Salma asks enthusiastically. "I wish," I mutter under my breath.
"No just a friend of mine," I say out loud instead. She gives me a teasing look.
"Then why was your face pink when you were talking to him?" She asks me.
"And you were smiling like crazy," Josh continues with a knowing smile.
I blush at that. "Fine! I like him but we are not dating," I admit shockingly. It's amazing how I actually blurted that out to them and not to Alexis. It made me feel terrible like I betrayed her.
"Ooouuhh!" Salma cooes. "So is it a guy from your school?"
And from that question, they started asking more and more question and soon enough, they knew every detail about us, excluding the fact that he's a celebrity.
