"You're not his princess, you're your own queen." -Nikita Gill.
"It's almost nine Alec, where are you?!" I ask him frustratingly over the phone. I pace around my room tugging a strand of my open hair, chewing my bottom lip.
"Calm down woman, I don't know Alexis much but I know her enough to not be awake at ten am on a Sunday," he answers, I can hear some shuffling and I know he is still in his room looking for something.
I sigh, "okay just hurry up."
I hang up the phone and put it in the back pocket of my jeans. I turn to stare at my reflection in the mirror. I wore my favorite blue t-shirt with small books drawn all over it with black skinny jeans. I left my hair open because it was still wet after washing and I usually use my mum's hair dryer since I don't own one and she locked her bedroom door because she wasn't home.
With a sigh, I shrug in my sneakers and walk out of my room, padding downstairs to the kitchen.
The chocolate cake I baked last night was on the kitchen table staring back at me. I cringe at my wobbly handwriting written on top of it with the icing.
'Happy birthday Alexis!"
Only the 's' looks like the number five. I sigh, oh well, this will do.
I gently place the cake inside the box I found and cover it up, I sit on one of the kitchen stools trying to remember anything that I might've forgotten to carry.
My phone was in my pocket, the snacks and drinks were with Alec. Alec will be cooking breakfast for Alexis to surprise her when she's still asleep on her bed, which apparently was the thing that's making him come late and Alexis' gift.
Sweet niblets! I almost forgot her gift!
I hurry up the stairs two at a time and grab the gift bag that was on top of my unmade messy bed. I grimace when I notice the mess that was my room; Remind me to clean it up next weekend.
Yes. Next weekend. Don't judge me.
As soon as I was jumping down the stairs two at a time, the doorbell rings signifying that someone was at the door.
Must be Alec.
I walk towards the door and open it revealing the Alec himself with a wide grin on his face. He looks casual, his hands in the pockets of his khaki shorts, a white polo t-shirt, and sandals. His dark hair was disheveled like he ran his hands through it a couple of times.
"Done checking me out?" He asks cockily, making me blush crimson.
"You're late."
"Aw come on! I'm pretty sure she is still asleep," he frowns. I roll my eyes but don't bother to argue with him. I dash towards the kitchen and carefully carried the cake while Alec helps me with the gift bag and we walk towards his black SUV waiting at the driveway.
He drives to Alexis' house with the help of the GPS and the parks at the driveway, giving Alexis' nanny a call.
I had to secretly try to get my hands on Alexis' phone when it was not locked and let me tell you, it was the hardest thing I had to do in my entire life.
After she picks up, Alec informs her that we're outside and a few seconds later an old lady opens the door, looking sleepy.
"Welcome," she tells us apathetically. I frown at this, well she is quite different from Alec's nanny.
"Is she still asleep?" Alec asks her as he passes her. I follow Alec to the kitchen, which the nanny showed us and was met by a small girl playing with cookie dough.
She must be Alexis' young sister.
She was adorable with her auburn hair, matching her older sister's, kept in pigtails and chubby cheeks with huge dimples which showed even when she opens her mouth slightly. Unlike Alexis' green eyes, hers were dark brown but big and blessed with the longest eyelashes I've ever seen on a four-year-old kid.
She looks at us for a second without saying anything. Her big brown eyes switching from me to Alec, then she gasps, "you're the bwoy in Alexis' wall!"
I grimace, something in my heart churning when I hear this. I turn to face Alec to see him scratching the back of neck awkwardly, a faint pink visible on his cheeks.
Is he embarrassed?
I never thought I'd see the day when Alec is blushing!
I burst out laughing, clutching my tummy because it hurts from laughing so much. I stand up to see the kid looking at me quizzically and Alec glaring at me. He clears his throat, "um yeah we are her friends."
"But Alexis said you're her bwoyfwend," she insists, turning my grin upside down. Let's just hope Alexis' obsession with Alec is gone now.
"Yeah, well I'm not," Alec answers curtly.
"What are your names?" She asks sweetly, looking at us. I give her a smile," I'm Summer and this is grumpy Alec."
Alec grunts in reply.
"What's your name sweetie?"
"I'm Laila," she answers with a giggle. "Today is Alexis' birthday!"
"Yes, that's why we are here. We want to surprise her with the cake and breakfast, would you like to join us?"
She nods excitedly at this, "I was baking her cookies with nana."
I smile at this, she is so cute.
I clear my throat before arranging the breakfast Alec made and placing them in the plates. I place the plate in a small wooden table and the cake in another, setting up the candles written 17 and lit them up. Carefully, I carry the table with the cake while Alec carries the one with the food.
We all walk together up the stairs and I open the door first, peeking to see if what she wore was appropriate.
What? Some girls like to sleep naked.
Once I confirmed she was dressed okay, I open the door wider and let Alec in, and together in sync we start singing the birthday song, waking Alexis up with a smile.
Her smile turns into a full-on grin when we set the cake on her laps with the food.
"Oh my god! You guys are going to make me cry," she sobs, her eyes already moist with tears. She blinks rapidly, blowing out the candles.
She hugs Laila and pulls her close to her. "Thank you guys so much!"
I grin, happy that she actually liked our surprise. I look around the room, studying it. It was not what I expected at all. Her room was clean, unlike mine. It had cream-colored walls with coffee colored curtains. I expected it to be pink or purple. It had a huge bean bag at the side and a small mahogany study desk. But what really shocked me was the posters at the wall against her four-poster bed, they were all of one person.
Alec Nicholaus Armstrong.
Oh my god.
This girl was obsessed!
Alexis notices my gaze and quickly flushes. "I'm sorry, I always forget to remove this. Don't worry Alec, I'm not an obsessed fan anymore."
Alec brushes it off, "it's okay."
She gasps suddenly, earning our full attention. "My face!"
I look at her face, quirking an eyebrow. I see nothing wrong with it. I half expected to see a huge zit or something but she had clear skin. This is the first time I'm seeing her without her make up. She is still pretty, if not prettier. Her skin is smooth, she hand no acne, no pimples, she has faint dark circles under her eyes but that didn't make her any less pretty. Her eyebrows were trimmed to perfection and she had a small black dot just beside her left eye which just added in her beauty.
"I have no makeup on! This is embarrassing," she says worriedly.
Okay, how is she insecure? She is perfect.
"Why would you be embarrassed though?" Alec asks. He actually looks curious, his eyebrows furrowed in the cute way whenever he wants to know something.
"You guys have never seen me without makeup on and I change a lot-" she starts but I cut her off. "You're prettier without it in my opinion."
She scoffs, "you're just being nice."
"Oh shut up and cut the cake," the nanny says, making us all jump in surprise. I didn't even know she was here.
Why is she so rude?
"Laila dear, it's time for your bath," the nanny days kindly, looking at the four-year-old. Her face actually changed and was smiling sweetly at her.
"Owkay, but after I get a cake from Alex," she answers back with a grin, showing us her adorable dimples. Alexis smiles and cuts a small piece of the cake with the fork and feeds her little sister. After that, she happily climbs out of the bed following her nanny outside the room.
Alexis eats her breakfast slowly as we all stay on the bed with each other's company. I take a woman's magazine I found on the bedside table and start reading it while Alec just lays on the bed staring at the ceiling.
"So what are we doing next?"
"We figured we could watch movies all day, we brought CDs," I answer her, flipping on to the next page.
"What movies?"
"I picked paper towns, fifty first dates, and bad moms," I answer her, turning on my back.
"Sappy movies," Alec scoffs, "I chose the good ones. Tell her my movies."
I roll my eyes at this, "The Conjuring two, Inside Out and the ring. Once again, Alec. I hate horror movies."
"It's just because you're scared."
"No, it's because they're not interesting."
"Chicken."
"Am not."
"Yes, you are."
"Not."
"Okay!" She stops our little argument. "I want to watch Summer's movies first."
"What? But why?!" Alec whines. I take out my tongue at him. "Ha!"
He pouts in reply, sitting up straight on the bed.
"One, because i'm afraid of horror movies and two, I don't watch animation movies."
Alec gasps at this, "how do you live?!"
We both roll our eyes at him before Alexis sets the CD, choosing Paper Towns first and we set ourselves comfortably with our snacks before the movie starts.
