The Day I Lost Everything
The day started like any other ordinary day.
I woke up early, made myself a cup of coffee, and sat by the small window in my apartment. The sunlight was soft, spreading across the wooden floor. For a moment, everything felt peaceful.
If someone had told me that my life would completely change in just a few hours, I probably would have laughed.
Back then, everything seemed stable.
I had a steady job at a small marketing company. The salary wasn’t amazing, but it was enough to pay rent and buy things I needed.
More importantly, I had Daniel.
Daniel and I had been together for almost three years. He was kind, funny, and patient with me. At least, that was what I believed.
Two months ago, he proposed.
I could still remember the moment clearly.
We were having dinner at a quiet restaurant downtown. The place wasn’t fancy, but it had a warm atmosphere. Soft music was playing in the background when he suddenly took out a small box.
My heart nearly stopped when he opened it.
Inside was a simple but beautiful ring.
“Will you marry me?” he asked.
Of course, I said yes.
At that time, I thought I was the happiest woman in the world.
I even called my sister right after.
Anna was two years younger than me. Growing up, we had always been close. She was the kind of person who could make any room feel lively.
When I told her about the engagement, she sounded excited.
“Oh my God! Finally!” she laughed over the phone.
I remember smiling so widely that my cheeks hurt.
Looking back now, I wonder if everything had already started falling apart back then.
Maybe I just didn’t notice.
That afternoon, I left work earlier than usual.
My boss had allowed everyone to go home early because the office internet system was down. Most of the employees were happy about it.
I thought it would be a good idea to surprise Daniel.
He had the day off from work and was supposed to be at home.
Daniel had moved into my apartment six months ago. We were planning to move into a bigger place after the wedding.
As I walked back home, I imagined his reaction when he saw me.
Maybe we could cook dinner together.
Or watch a movie.
It sounded simple, but those small moments meant a lot to me.
When I reached the apartment building, everything seemed normal.
The hallway was quiet.
I unlocked the door and stepped inside.
“Daniel?” I called out.
No answer.
I frowned slightly.
Maybe he went out to buy something.
I placed my bag on the table and took off my shoes. Just as I was about to head to the kitchen, I suddenly heard something.
A faint sound.
It was coming from upstairs.
At first, I thought it was the television.
But then I heard it again.
A laugh.
A woman's laugh.
My eyebrows slowly furrowed.
That voice…
It sounded familiar.
My heart began beating faster for reasons I couldn’t explain.
Slowly, I walked toward the stairs.
Each step felt strangely heavy.
The sound became clearer as I moved closer to the bedroom.
I stopped when I reached the door.
It was slightly open.
Through the small gap, I could hear whispering.
And then…
A man's voice.
Daniel.
My stomach dropped.
For a second, my mind tried to find a reasonable explanation.
Maybe Anna came over to visit.
Yes, that must be it.
Anna sometimes visited without telling me in advance.
I pushed the door open.
The moment the door swung wide, everything froze.
Daniel was standing near the bed.
And right beside him…
was my sister.
Anna.
They both turned their heads toward me.
No one spoke.
No one moved.
The room suddenly felt too small, like the air had disappeared.
I looked at them.
Then at the bed.
The messy sheets.
The silence stretched painfully between us.
Finally, I managed to speak.
“What’s going on?”
My voice sounded unfamiliar to my own ears.
Daniel looked nervous.
His face turned pale.
“Listen… it’s not what you think,” he said quickly.
But Anna didn’t look nervous at all.
In fact, she looked calm.
Almost amused.
She slowly crossed her arms and leaned against the bed.
“You weren’t supposed to come home this early,” she said casually.
Her words felt like a slap.
“What?” I whispered.
Daniel ran a hand through his hair.
“I was going to tell you,” he said.
But he never finished the sentence.
Anna stepped closer to him and casually wrapped her arm around his waist.
The movement was so natural.
Like she had done it many times before.
“This is pointless,” she said. “She already saw everything.”
My mind refused to process what was happening.
“Daniel?” I said weakly.
He didn’t look at me.
That hurt more than anything.
Three years.
Three years of memories.
Three years of believing we were building a future together.
And now, everything was collapsing right in front of me.
Anna tilted her head slightly.
“You always were a little slow,” she said.
My hands trembled.
“What are you talking about?”
She smiled.
Not a warm smile.
A cruel one.
“Daniel and I have been seeing each other for months.”
The words felt unreal.
“That's impossible,” I said.
But Daniel still didn’t deny it.
He simply stayed silent.
That silence was the final answer.
My chest tightened painfully.
“I thought you loved me,” I whispered.
Daniel finally spoke.
“I didn’t mean for it to happen like this.”
That was all he could say.
Anna laughed softly.
“Oh please,” she said. “You make it sound like a tragic accident.”
She looked directly into my eyes.
“The truth is simple. He likes me more.”
Something inside me shattered at that moment.
But strangely, I didn’t cry.
Not yet.
Instead, I felt something else.
A deep numbness.
I took a slow breath.
“Fine,” I said quietly.
Both of them looked surprised.
“If that’s what you want… you can have him.”
I turned around and walked toward the door.
Behind me, Anna spoke again.
“You’re not even going to fight for him?”
I stopped walking.
For a moment, I considered turning back.
But then I realized something.
There was nothing left to fight for.
So I continued walking.
Leaving behind the two people who had just destroyed my world.
At that time, I didn’t know that this betrayal…
would soon lead me to meet a man far more powerful than Daniel could ever dream of becoming.
A man who would completely change my fate.
