The Headline That Changed Everything

1099 Words
The ballroom slowly returned to normal after the reporters were escorted outside. Music resumed. Soft conversations filled the air again, but the atmosphere was no longer the same. People were still whispering, still glancing toward Elena and Alexander as if they had just witnessed the beginning of something dramatic. Elena exhaled slowly. “I think I just survived the most embarrassing moment of my life.” Alexander raised an eyebrow slightly. “Only the most embarrassing?” Elena looked at him. “You’re joking?” Alexander took a sip of his champagne. “That was mild compared to what usually happens when the media gets involved.” Elena stared at him in disbelief. “Mild?” Alexander’s lips curved faintly. “You’ll get used to it.” She shook her head. “I’m not sure I want to.” Across the ballroom, several guests continued stealing curious glances at them. Some looked impressed. Others looked suspicious. But the thing Elena noticed the most was how people suddenly treated her differently. Not as the unknown woman who appeared out of nowhere— but as Alexander Hale’s wife. The weight of that title felt strange. Unreal. “You’re thinking too much,” Alexander said quietly. Elena blinked. “Am I that obvious?” “Yes.” She sighed. “Today has been… overwhelming.” Alexander nodded slightly. “That tends to happen when you marry one of the most talked-about CEOs in the country.” Elena gave him a look. “You say that like it’s a normal Tuesday.” “For me, it almost is.” She laughed softly despite herself. For a moment, the tension from earlier faded. But then Alexander’s assistant suddenly appeared again. “Mr. Hale.” Alexander turned. “Yes?” “There’s something you should see.” The assistant handed him a phone. Alexander glanced at the screen. His expression didn’t change much, but Elena noticed the slight tightening of his jaw. “What is it?” she asked. Alexander handed the phone to her. The moment Elena looked at the screen, her stomach dropped. A news article filled the display. The headline read: “Billionaire CEO Alexander Hale Secretly Marries Unknown Woman.” Below it was a photo of Elena and Alexander taken earlier that evening. Reporters must have posted it immediately. The article described the dramatic scene in the ballroom, the confrontation with Daniel and Anna, and the shocking revelation of their marriage. Elena sighed. “Well… that was fast.” But as she scrolled down, another headline appeared. This one made her heart stop. “Who Is Elena Rivera? The Mysterious Past of Alexander Hale’s New Wife.” Elena’s fingers froze. Slowly, she tapped the article. A photo appeared on the screen. An old photo. Taken years ago. The background looked like a university campus. And standing beside Elena in that picture— was a man. A man with a confident smile and his arm casually around her shoulders. Elena’s breathing became shallow. She remembered that day clearly. She also remembered the promise she had made to herself afterward— that she would never let that part of her life follow her again. “What’s wrong?” Alexander’s voice was calm, but Elena could feel his gaze on her. She forced herself to breathe normally. “It’s nothing.” Alexander didn’t look convinced. He took the phone back and read the article himself. The assistant shifted nervously beside them. “We’re trying to trace where the photo came from,” he said quickly. Alexander’s eyes narrowed slightly. “Elena.” She looked at him. “Do you know this man?” For a moment, Elena didn’t answer. Her mind raced. If she told him the truth, everything might change. But if she lied— Alexander would eventually find out. And that might be even worse. Finally, she spoke. “Yes.” Alexander waited. But she didn’t continue. His voice remained calm. “Who is he?” Elena swallowed. “Someone from my past.” “That much is obvious.” His tone wasn’t harsh. Just direct. Elena looked away toward the tall windows of the ballroom. Outside, the city lights glittered like distant stars. “I knew him in college,” she said quietly. Alexander watched her carefully. “Were you dating?” Elena hesitated. Then she nodded once. “Yes.” The assistant looked uncomfortable. “I’ll… give you two a moment,” he said before walking away. Silence settled between them. Alexander studied the photo again. Then he asked the question Elena had been dreading. “Why is the article calling him missing?” Elena’s heart skipped a beat. Because that was the part she hadn’t noticed yet. She grabbed the phone again. And there it was— A line buried in the article. “The man in the photo has reportedly been missing for three years.” Elena’s blood ran cold. “That’s impossible,” she whispered. Alexander’s gaze sharpened. “You didn’t know?” Elena shook her head slowly. “No.” Her voice sounded distant even to her own ears. Alexander slipped the phone back into his pocket. “We’ll deal with it.” Elena frowned. “What do you mean?” “It means,” he said calmly, “if the media wants to dig into your past, they’ll have to go through me first.” Elena blinked. “You don’t even know the whole story.” Alexander met her eyes. “That’s true.” “Then why are you helping me?” For a moment, Alexander didn’t answer. Then he said quietly, “Because whether we like it or not… your past is now connected to my name.” Elena exhaled slowly. “That’s not very romantic.” Alexander’s lips curved faintly. “Good thing this isn’t a romance.” Elena almost laughed. Almost. But something about the article kept bothering her. If that man was really missing… Then why had someone suddenly released their old photo now? And who would benefit from exposing her past? As if answering her thoughts, Alexander’s phone vibrated. He glanced at the screen. Then his expression darkened slightly. “What is it?” Elena asked. Alexander turned the phone toward her. Another message had appeared. This time from an unknown number. The text was short. “If you want to know what really happened to him… ask your wife.” Elena felt a chill run down her spine. Because she recognized the number. And the person who sent it… was someone she thought she would never hear from again.
