Chapter 61

ELEANOR’S POV So, this is where that upstart lives. I stared at the worn door for some time, trying to figure out the best spot to knock on without contracting whatever disease was festering on the wood. Even with my gloved hands, I didn’t want to touch that door. After a few minutes of deliberation, I rapped my knuckles gently on the door. It swung open noiselessly. A young woman stood in the doorway, an apple in her hand. Her hair was messy. She was wearing ratty jeans and a flannel shirt tucked halfway into the jeans. She started at me, her young eyes vibrant and colorful. I waited before stepping into the apartment. “Hey,” she said half-heartedly, taking a bite of the apple in her hand. “Nice place, my dear,” I said. It wasn’t easy. I couldn't believe actual humans lived there.
