The beginning
“Anna! Your father is in the pack hospital, we need you to come down here!” I couldn’t believe it. Why on Earth would my father be in the hospital?! He was the strongest Alpha on the west coast! I flew down the stairs trying desperately to fight back tears of worry, when I bumped into Layla “oof. Watch where you’re going, dumbass!” She yelled at me, although her remark didn’t register with me as I continued to the pack hospital. “Where is he?! I need to see him.” I cried at the receptionist, bewildering her. “The alpha is in room 206 dear, although, we aren’t allowing visitors just now. He’s in a critical state” I didn’t care. I had to see him now! I rushed to the room to find Claire waiting outside, not looking as worried as she should be. I hate my stepmother, I hate that dad had to find someone else after mum died. And her daughter Layla was the most spoilt brat I’ve ever met, the absolute worst! Seeing my father still and hooked up to all these machines put a massive lump in my throat. This man was my world, he raised me and trained with me to make me strong in order to lead the pack one day. “We think the alpha may have been poisoned. We are currently running tests to confirm which poison has been used, however he is in a bad state and may not pull through this. I’m so sorry.” The doctor informed both of us. There was a deadly silence between us, and the only noise were the sniffs from me trying not to cry. If my dad doesn’t pull through this, I’m the next in line to run this pack at 17. Well, unless Claire ends up taking over, but I don’t think she would dare. She was never made Luna of the pack and most of us hate her. I know I would have the support to take her on if needs be, I just hope it doesn’t come to that. She seemed oddly unaffected by the fact that her husband had been poisoned, and that just didn’t sit right with me. She’s never been this calm, she’s always the first to fly off the handle. I remember a few years ago when I was 14, and Layla was 17, she found out that Layla had got into a fight with someone at school and she had ended up breaking her hand, Claire was rushing into the room to make sure her “precious baby” was okay, fawning all over her. Layla obviously milked all of the attention, as per usual. Hundreds of flowers filled the room she had been put in and she was only in there to get it set and a cast! So the fact that Claire seemed so disinterested in the situation seemed off. It got to 6.30 and I was starting to get hungry, so I decided to head down to the cafè and grab something to eat. My Dad hadn’t made any progress and Claire had left a few hours ago, so I was just on my own. I picked up a sandwich and some snacks and headed back to the waiting area to eat and get a little bit of rest, before dad wakes up and I can go see him. I must have fallen asleep quickly as I was shaken awake by the doctor. I opened my eyes slowly, taking in that I was still in the waiting room. The doctor looked distraught, and I did not have a good feeling about what was coming next. “Anna I am so sorry, but the Alpha has passed on. Please accept my deepest condolences, he was a great man and an even better Alpha, many of us looked up to him.” No, it can’t be! I had lost the one person I could turn to about everything, who would hold me when I cried, and teach me to be tough. This was a disaster. I wasn’t ready to lead a pack, not without him helping me! Suddenly two large men come through the door and grab hold of me, I struggle with them to get free for a moment before there is a thud and everything falls dark. I wake up after what feels like an eternity to a small dark room, with one light swinging above my head. I take in my surroundings, there is a bucket in the corner, the chair I am sat on and arms tied to, and a steel door with no window. I slowly begin to realise that the two men had taken me to our cells below the pack house, which must mean that Claire had taken over. I groaned inwardly, this was not going to be good.
