The Beginning
It was the day of my wedding, the roses were silver and purple. It was the best day ever, wait you don't know the whole story do you? No? Let me start over, it was many years ago when I was only just beginning to walk. Though I was young, I understood that I would lose my parents by the hand of pirates.
It was a cold day, I was asleep in my small bed and my parents were asleep in the next room. I could not predict that night would be my parents' last night. It was around midnight when my parents burst into my room with smoke trailing behind them, they took me out of my bed and wrapped me in a blanket. They put me in a large pot and lowered me out of my second story bedroom windowsill to a family friend, I got out of the pot and called with all my might to them.
"Mommy, daddy come with me and Charlene!" I cried up to them and Charlene grabbed me.
"We will be right down honey!" mom cried.
"Charlene take her somewhere safe!" dad said.
Charlene took me to her house, but by the time the firemen arrived my parents were dead. I was only three when they died, it took many nights to calm me down. Ten years past and mama Charlene, that is what I started to call her, raised me as her own daughter and I thought it was time I left and made my own future on the seas.
"I shall miss you dear, you have been like a daughter to me after your parents left this earth. " Charlene said, putting on my favorite long coat.
"I know mama Charlene, thank you for being there for me. I think it is time I go out and see the world, I will always write to you I promise." I said, hugging my step mother.
"Take care of yourself dearie!" Charlene said, waving from the door as I walked away.
"I will, you know me!" I yelled, waving at her and taking a deep breath before heading toward the docks.
I was half way to the docks when two men, both three times my size, grabbed me and dragged me away from the crowds. They were very burly men and they didn't know that I was going to beat them to a pulp.
"Hello girly." One of the men, or asshole number one as I called him in my head, said.
"What is a beautiful girl, such as yourself, doing out on the streets alone?" The second deuce said.
"Oh I don't know, doing a bit of sightseeing and kicking guys in the shins." I said, kicking both of them in the shins and running full speed for the docks.
I stopped at last and panted, looking behind me in case I was followed. I sighed in relief but it was short lived when I was grabbed my two rough hands. I gasped and looked up at the angered faces of the men I kicked.
"Should not have done that girly." said guy number one.
"Darling, there you are I was wondering where you went to." A voice said and all three of us, me and the two guys, looked at the man.
I pointed to my self and the man nodded, when he came into the light I saw he was apart of the army. The two men growled at him and he just stood there and smirked. The two big guys charged at the man, but when the man pulled out a pistol the two big guys ran the other way.
I got up brushing myself off, when the man came and grabbed me by the waist. I gasped but when I saw his eyes it was like my soul was connected to his. He and I continued to stare until he let go of my waist and looked away from me.
"I believe the docks were your destination.?" He asked me and I nodded, quickly running to a boat.
Before I left I heard the man say I was like mist and I thought about that as a compliment, I wandered around when I heard the two men coming toward me again. I looked around and found a sailor stacking barrels for his ship, I ran to the sailor and tapped him on the shoulder.
"Excuse me sir but could I please come on your ship with you, you see these two me are chasing me so I need an escape." I said frantically, looking behind me for the men.
"My captain won't like it, but I can sneak you on board in one of these barrels. This one is empty, climb in quick." The sailor said and I climbed in, thankful I could get away.
"Excuse us have you seen a woman with blond hair, blue eyes, a voice like silk, about five foot three and looking panicked come through here?" One of the men I ticked off asked.
"Not sure, there are a lot of women that look like that around some people they meet. So, I can't help you men." The sailor said.
I heard the men growl and trudge away, I sighed in relief. I gasped when I was lifted up and tilted to the side, I looked out a small hole and saw I was going onto the ship and down to the cellar of the ship. I heard many voices, none of which I recognized, one voice was of the sailor that saved my life.
"As soon as I can I will get you put of there and get you some fresh food, water and clothing." The sailor said, walking up the stairs.
I slept in that barrel, it wasn't too uncomfortable, and I awoke to someone coming down the stairs. I hoped it was not another sailor going to open the barrel I was in and report me as a stowaway. I edged myself as far back as I could go when I saw full light coming into the barrel. I sighed when I saw it was the man that had saved my life, he held out his hand to help me out and stretch. I gladly took his hand and my legs got used to the rocking of the boat. I ate gently and drank what I needed before I slept on a net, when I awoke again it was morning and I was behind the barrels. I got up and stretched for a bit, I saw a pile of women clothing and a note on top. The note read: 'This was all I could find, choose what you like. The Capitan does not take interest in this clothing, so I snatched it for you saying that I would toss it into the waves. By the way my name is Dominic.' I smiled at the note and then shifted through the clothing.
I picked out a light lavender shirt with sleeves up to my elbows, a pair of black pants, a thin belt; for holding swords and pistols, a pair of brown boots with a small heel, a burgundy vest and a purple hair ribbon. I sighed in relief I was in normal clothing and not soaking wet clothing. I put my old cloths in the pile of clothing, I put my jacket in a dry spot to help it dry off. I heard footsteps coming down and hid behind a large pile of crates, I slowed my panicked breathing so they would not hear me.
"Hello, are you in here ma'am?" Dominic said and I came out of hiding.
"You scared me Dominic, I thought you were another sailor." I said.
"Sorry about that, I brought you some food and I like the new look." He said, setting the food down and gesturing to my new look.
I nodded my thanks and ate the food he brought me, I heard a loud booming voice and I assumed it was the captain. I hid again, just in case.
"Dominic were is that rum you have been gone for more than fifteen seconds!" The Captain boomed and Dominic ran out with a glass full of that rum stuff.
I never liked the smell of any alcohol, because it always smelled like something died and so I don't like it. I stayed behind the crates until I heard the captain go into his cabin and Dominic come down again.
"Are you okay?" I asked, putting a hand on Dominic's shoulder.
"No I need Eloise." Dominic said, putting his hands to his face and sobbing.
"Eloise, is she your love?" I asked.
"She is my entire world, I married her five years ago. I miss her so much and the captain wouldn't allow me to see her again." Dominic said, weeping again.
"That is just cruel, I know what your going through I lost my parents in a fire and I would do anything to see them just one last time." I said, seeing Dominic lift his head and smile.
"Being a pirate is the worst job, I wish we could give back what we stole and keep what we found that no one else claims." Dominic said, pinching the bridge of his nose.
"A pirate who hates his job, that is a first for me." I said, sitting next to Dominic.
"Well everyone on board is not with Captain Barbados." Dominic said, laughing.
"So that is his name, I was nick naming him Captain loudmouth in my head." I said, laughing a bit.
"Yeah that is a better name for him, I should call him it whenever his back is turned." Dominic said, picking up the food tray and walking back up the stairs.
"See you later then Dominic." I said, waving as Dominic left.
I laid on my make shift net bed and drifted off to sleep, I woke to hear foots steps coming down to the cellar. I jumped up and instead of Dominic it was Captain Barbados, he grabbed me and dragged me up to the deck and began shouting.
"Look here boys we have a stowaway and a pretty one at that." Barbados shouted and all the men gasped, even Dominic.
I squirmed and then I remembered all the books I read on the pirate rules, I thought quickly and shouted the one law every pirate has to obey no matter what.
"Parlay!" I shouted and everyone looked at me.
"What?!" The captain shouted at me.
"All rules of parlay involve no harm coming to the person while he or she is on a pirate ship and trying to push such person overboard is also involved in those rules, I have read every old and new pirate law ever written so don't think I won't apply those rules now." I said and instantly the captain let go of me.
"Cursed rules." The captain muttered, pacing.
"I also call a mutiny against you." I said and the captain burst out laughing.
"Ye have to be a crew member to call mutiny." The captain said.
"Actually no, any person aboard a vessel is allowed to call mutiny if any person should stand behind him or her." I said, watching the captain's face freeze with shock.
"And who would support a woman like yer self?" The captain said.
"I will." Dominic said, standing next to me.
"I will." The other crew members said, coming to stand behind me.
"Yer going ter need a cutlass." The captain said.
A crew member came out with cutlasses from the cellar, my gaze was caught by a silver sword with a small handle. I unsheathed the sword and traced the rose design and nodded.
"This is my sword, I need to warn you I have trained in sword fighting." I said, taking my stance.
"Ye mean girly fencing, ha good luck to ya girly." The captain said, getting into position.
"No," I narrowed my eyes "I mean sword fighting." I said.
I clashed my sword against his and knocked his sword out of his hand into the mast of the ship, I put my sword up three inches away from the captains neck and smirked.
"I never thought I'd be living to see the day a woman beat me." The captain said, putting his hands up.
"Well you are alive, but you lost. The winner has to chose the terms and I am not heartless." I said, sheathing the sword.
"Then what ye be doing with me?" The captain said.
"You will be banished to an island where any ship will not pass and where there is enough food to live out the rest of your miserable life alone." I said, nodding to a sailor who steered the ship to the type of island I mentioned.
"And what of me crew?" The captain asked, before we left the island.
"They are free to do what they please and to go to their loved ones." I said, hearing the cheers aboard the ship.
We were over fifty miles away from the island when the crew was celebrating their newly found freedom.
"Wait we need a captain!" Dominic said, holding up a red sash.
"Who will do it?" The crew muttered.
"You should pick a person who is compassionate, caring, nice, not greedy, not selfish and completely reliable." I said when the crew looked at me and smiled.
"What about you?" Dominic asked.
"Yeah!" The crew agreed.
"Why me?" I asked.
"Your all the things you mentioned and so much more!" Dominic said, handing me the sash.
I felt the sash with my thumb and looked up at all the excited faces that needed a leader, but I wasn't a leader though. Was I?
"But you don't know my name and I know nothing about leading." I said.
"What is your name?" Dominic asked.
"It is the name I chose for myself, Silver Rose." I said.
Dominic tied the sash in my hair and put a captain's hat onto my head. Dominic smirked and turned to the crew.
"Madame Captain Silver Rose, our new captain, may the winds forever be in her favor and as for leading you only need an objective and a set of goals, unlike our last captain." Dominic said and the crew cheered.
I raised my sword and the crew raised theirs with mine, they all chanted my name and cheered. I smiled at all the faces, I lowered the pirate flag and set it on fire to promote anti piracy. I searched what was now my ship for material and I found the perfect material, it was purple with a silver edge and I found red and green and white. I made a new flag, it was to symbolize hope and purity to those who saw it. This flag would later become the sign of death for pirates, but later on.
"What is the name of 'my' ship?" I said to a crew member, Dakin as I learned.
"With Barbados it was Death Ship, but a new captain has to pick a new name or stick with the name of the boat." Dakin said and I thought about a name.
"How about, the Mystic Rose?" I said.
"Let me ask, hey fellas!" Dakin said and all of the crew turned their heads toward us.
"The new captain has pick a new name for the ship, she has picked Mystic Rose for the name. What do ya think?" Dakin asked.
"We like it!" The crew said all at once.
I smiled and sanded out the old name of the ship. I engraved the new name on a plate of silver and painted the letters purple. I looked at the new name and knew that this name would mean hope for victims and death for pirates, it was not revenge it was more of retribution.
