Chapter Three

“ Oye ! Oye ! Oye ! ” I jolted awake, the shaking on my shoulder vigorous. I came face to face with an individual I least wished to see. " You owe me ! You said by the end of the night, ” The burly man licked his lips and eyed me as a predator watched prey. Big fella, don't you know jokes ? Apparently, not so, for he hauled me up using his beefy arm and I stumbled to stay upright. The club looked much worse during the day than it did at night. The stench of alcohol nauseating, snores from passed out drunks filled the air and smoke that half covered few underdressed waitresses on the tables, also passed out. He started dragging me along. Oh no ! I had to device a strategy. I abruptly resisted his pull, his head swift in turning and an angry face as a result which softened when he saw my treacherous batting of lashes. “ It would be unfair to get on with in my state, ” Curiosity schooled his features. “ What state ? ” A giggle, “ I have not been exactly a good girl, sir . ” He seemed annoyed and ashamed by the confession and pointed a finger at door behind us. “ There's a loo over behind that door, I'm expecting you in an hour. ” An escaping chance. I hastily walked to the door. It was always a wonder how effortlessly did so in my six inch red suede heels, the only shoe I had ever retained and wore since I was kicked out of my father's house. The corridor was dirty, the stench worsening as I approached the designated toilet but I did not have to fret for a door by the right at the far end of the corridor pointed to an exit and I dashed through it. “ Wewe ! Wewe ! ” Oh no ! It was the nasty bouncer again, I spared a glimpse behind and sure enough he was hot on my trail. I sped up, turning heads whether it was for the fact of a woman in six inch going on full bolt mode or the fact that I was being chased down the River road alley by a giant of a man, I could not be too sure. I crossed the street landing back in Tom Mboya Street, past by the Archives straight into Ambassador hotel. Bump ! Rip! I landed my behind on the ground hard! My precious heel twisting at an awkward angle and my face stinging as if I had hit a swinging punching bag. “ What is this ? ” A calm but disturbed voice asked. “ Security ! Security ! Hold that man ! ” A scuffle . Despite the pain I felt, I peeked an eye open. My pursuer was held down by three security men in blue while a lean but good looking man in a white shirt barked orders . “ Boss, you don't understand, she owes me ! ” The white shirt guy turned to me, “ You owe him ? ” “ Me, no ! ” I crooked out , “ Of course not sir, I have just been kicked out of my hotel and I have no job, I was just out on the street when he - he - he started chasing me. ” I broke into a sob. He bore a sympathetic look and glared at the bouncer who was in shock at my hypocrite show. “ But she - ” “ Silence ! ” “ She offered - ” “ Silence ! ” “ A deal - ” “ Take him away ! ” The white shirt guy finally barked out, the men in blue springing onto action. I sighed grateful. One problem sorted. I made to stand only to stumble again. My ankle was in throbbing pain. “ May I ? ” A large palm was presented before me and a kind smile adorned his face, dazzling as his white shirt. I hesitantly took the palm, he helped me up. “ Thank you , ” He smiled, “ You said you got kicked out , ” I wobbled a little and his eyes darted to my foot in notice. “ Yes , I've nowhere to go. ” “ Hmm, ” A finger over his chin. “ I would offer a job but it is not very pleasant - ” “ Sir, anything would be okay, ” “ Uh , this hotel needs toilet maintenance , ” He stated, then his brown eyes darted back to mine. “ I'll take it , how much ? ” “ Twenty thousand a month, ” “ Yes ! ” I jumped only to stumble and be supported by him. “ Sorry ! ” I mumbled, “ but thank you ! Thank you ! Thank you, sir ! ” At this point in time, I felt like kissing his shoes. His eyes were furrowed as he stared at me, confusion clear. “ You're welcome, ” Glossary Wewe - You
