MEETING THE MASTER

I was in the middle of sleeping when I got awakened by a sudden phone call. I opened my eyes and realized that my phone was near my ear. That’s why the ringtone was too loud for me to hear. It literally disturbed my sleep.

The phone was still ringing when I stared at it. Then I saw that an unregistered number was calling me. I looked at the time and realized that it was already 2 a.m. Why would anyone call me at this late hour?

Out of curiosity, I answered the call.

“Hello, who is this?” I asked as soon as I answered the call. I tried to listen for the voice on the other line but I didn’t hear a sound.

“Hello? Who is this?” I asked again, but still, no one answered.

Who the hell is this? This person really chose to disturb sleeping people at this very hour, huh?

I took a deep breath and irritatingly added, “If you don’t have anything to do in life, just talk to the moon. Maybe it would answer you. Don’t disturb people sleeping this late!” I said and before the person on the other line said a word, I ended the call.

I was frowning at the moment because I got irritated by the sudden phone call of an unknown caller.

“Jamie, why are you shouting? You’re going to wake your siblings up,” Mom said while looking at me. I didn’t notice that Mom was already awake and it was all because of me.

I rolled my eyes and replied, “There was this caller. The number was not registered with my phone. I thought it was what I’d been waiting for. But it looks like it was just a prank call. That person disturbed my sleep. I’m sorry about the noise.” I said while staring at my phone, frowning.

Mom was about to say another word when the number called earlier again. The loud noise of my ringtone was heard all over the house. I immediately ended the call because of that. “This person had no plans to stop, huh?” I said while looking at my phone. Then I turned my phone into silent mode.

“Just ignore the call and go to sleep,” Mom said while looking at me.

I was holding my phone and was about to put it aside when I received a text message from the same unknown number earlier. I sighed with disbelief and opened the message.

“Answer the phone.”

I narrowed my eyes after reading the message. And this person had the guts to command me to answer the call? Who the hell was this anyway? I asked this person earlier but there was no response! Then, after a few moments, the number called again. And because of that, in order for me to not disturb Mom and my siblings, I decided to go outside the house to answer this punk! As soon as I closed the door, I immediately answered the call.

“WHO THE HELL ARE YOU? WHY ARE YOU BOTHERING ME?” I exclaimed as soon as I answered the call.

After a few moments, I heard someone on the other side sigh. So I instantly remained silent and didn’t hang up yet.

Then a manly, handsome voice answered what I blurted out.

“Is this Jaime Hearst?”

As soon as he said that, I instantly composed myself. Then I felt my heart racing as soon as I heard his voice. And with stuttering lips, I replied, “Y-Yes, who is this anyway?” I said while listening to what he was about to say.

“You’re hired. Come to the mansion at 8 a.m. tomorrow. I’ll be waiting.” He said.

After hearing those words, my heart skipped a beat. But I still have doubts about what he said. The one who interviewed me last time was the head maid and it was a woman. Then why was the one talking to me right now a guy? Is this a scam or what?

I was about to ask him questions but he suddenly hung up the call. “What the?” I stared at my phone after that. This time he hung up the call.

Would I believe what that guy said? But he said that I got hired. I’m getting confused right now!

I entered the house and closed the door. Then I went back to where I was lying earlier. Right now, I’m having doubts and hopes at the same time. What if what the guy said earlier was true? What if he really was from the mansion and called me because I had been hired already? But why do they perform calls at this late hour? That place was really mysterious and creepy at the same time.

I was staring at the ceiling when I realized that it was already 3:30 a.m., so I forced myself to sleep so that I could go there to the mansion tomorrow to confirm the call.

The next morning, I immediately went back to the mansion to confirm if I really got hired by them. I know this thing was very risky. But it’s now or never. I need to know if the caller last night was legit or not because I was still considering what the head maid told me yesterday about the phone call.

When I faced the guards, I just told them that someone had called me last night about the hiring process. So they immediately allowed me to enter the place again. As I went to where I applied yesterday, the long lines were already gone. So I looked around while getting confused about the whole setup.

“ Did you receive a call last night, Miss?”

Then I immediately turned around and saw a maid holding a broom. She was standing in front of me waiting for my reply. I immediately nodded because of what she asked.

“Hurry! The master doesn’t want anyone of his servants to be late! You should go to the mansion’s lobby now. Others were already there.” She exclaimed.

I smiled back and replied, “Thank you.” So I ran as fast as I could to where she told me to go.

So that means the guy from last night who called me was legit. Does this mean I really got hired already? And now, I was about to meet the boss like the others?

In a distance, I saw three other women standing and they were wearing the same clothes as the maid I encountered earlier. Then I recognized the other one of them. She was the one who asked me about the salary yesterday. So that means those women were newly hired maids just like me! Then I looked at myself because of that. They were already wearing uniforms but I wasn’t! What should I do? Then I checked the time and realized it was already 8:05 a.m. I was 5 minutes late from what the guy told me last night!

I know this would be a very embarrassing entrance but I need to do this to know the important things to do for the newly hired maids. So I walked fast while bowing my head until I reached the line where others were standing. Then I stood beside the last one in the line.

At that moment, I could recognize the one speaking in front of us. She was the head maid from yesterday and she was now informing everyone about the important things to know. Yet, she stopped as soon as I arrived.

“You, who just arrived.” She suddenly said. I knew she was already calling my attention. So I slowly looked at her. Then I realized that all of them were looking at me.

“Yes, ma’am?” I asked humbly while my cheeks were already blushing out of embarrassment.

She crossed her arms and looked at me from head to toe.

“You gave me a very bad impression from the very first day,” she said while looking at me.

I immediately bowed my head because of that and replied, “I’m so sorry for being late, Ma’am. I-“

“Nobody needs your reasons here!” She exclaimed, making me startled.

“That’s enough.”

All of us heard a voice from upstairs. The voice was familiar to me. That’s why I immediately found where the voice was coming from. Then we saw a man wearing a black turtle neck, with long sleeves, and a knitted shirt. He’s also wearing black pants and white rubber shoes. He had a gold necklace which was visible because he was wearing black. He was walking downstairs while holding his black suit.

As soon as the Head-maid saw him, she immediately bowed her head and moved aside. The guy who was almost the same as my age stood in front of us. His presence was too cold, which made the place instantly an awkward one when he appeared. All of us were staring at him when suddenly the head maid exclaimed.

“You should not look at the master’s eyes. Everyone's eyes down!” She said.

As soon as she said that, all of us bowed our heads and looked at the floor while feeling the presence of the guy who was with us at the moment.

Wait…

What?

H-He’s the master of this mansion?

He sat and leaned against the couch. I could feel that he was staring at the four of us. Why am I feeling so nervous right now? My hands were shaking at the moment. So I locked my hands to stop the shaking and breathed out silently.

“Why are you not wearing your uniform?” He coldly said.

Even though I couldn’t see him, I already knew that he was talking to me. So I looked at him and was about to reply when the headmaid spoke.

“She arrived 5 minutes late from our call time, Master. Should I give her punishment?” The head maid said while bowing her head.

Punishments? That instant?

The master looked at me and our eyes met. Because of that, I immediately bowed my head to avoid his stares.

“Do whatever you want.” He coldly replied.

“Yes, master.” The head maid said.

I closed my eyes and sighed because of that. This would be my first day and it should be a happy day because I got hired. But I don’t think this will be anymore.

The master sat for seconds on the couch and finally stood up. “Tell the new ones to start working.” He said while walking away. The head maid bowed again as a sign of agreement with what he commanded.

The four newly hired maids, including me, are left standing in front of the head maid.

“The three of you, you heard the master. Go and start working!” She demanded.

So the three maids went on their way to start working just like what was commanded to them. Then the head maid stared at me. She got closer to me and looked at me.

“As for you, come with me.” She said with gritted teeth.

Then she started walking. I sighed and followed her after what she said.

We entered a room and she threw at me the uniform I should be wearing. “Wear those, now! Then come back to me later.” She demanded.

So I went inside the restroom and changed my clothes. Then I faced her.

“Good. Now, since you’re late. You’ll receive punishment for it. In case you didn’t know, the one who approached us earlier was the master of this mansion. The master’s name is Dwight Hudson. He doesn’t like anyone looking at him in the eyes. Unless you are one of his family or friends. He’s a very meticulous person. He never accepts reasons. Once you commit something against his will, get ready for punishment. Once he gives you instructions, do it immediately! So my advice to you is, if you want to stay here at the mansion earning more than enough, you should never do anything against his will. And never disturb him during his rest.” She said.

I listened to every word attentively and tried to remember all of the important things I needed to know.

“Now, for your punishment, clean the whole lobby. Sweep it, mop it, and sweep it again. Make sure there’s no speck of dust lying on the floor. Once I see any dust on it, I’ll make you repeat everything. Do you understand?” The head maid said in an authoritative voice.

“Yes, ma’am,” I replied.

She gave me the things I would need to do for my punishment. The broom, rugs, mop, and bleaching detergents. Then she left me with it. While holding the things I needed to use, I sighed.

“This will be a very challenging day for me,” I whispered.
