DIVORCE PAPERS
CHAPTER ONE:
JUNE'S POV
"Sign them" I staggered with my palm covering my lips as I stared at the paper my husband dropped on the table in front of me.
"Sign the damn papers while I'm still being nice" He yelled at me, I flinched and took a few steps back, tears rolled down my face.
"Please Michael, don’t do this to me, aside from you I have no one else…" My voice broke as I spoke, he couldn't seriously mean this.
But the man in front of me didn't even look at me with any ounce of pity, he grabbed my arm violently and pushed me against the wall.
"Five minutes June, that's all you have to sign the divorce papers and get the hell out of my house!" He yelled again while glaring at me.
After this, he walked out of the room leaving me broken and in tears in the comforts of our matrimonial bedroom, as usual.
I sat on the floor, my heart broken beyond repair, everything I had thrived to build within the past two years came crashing before my eyes and there was little or nothing I could do about it.
I still remembered all that had happened in the past two years of our marriage, all I had to go through all because of a man who I loved and thought loved me back wholeheartedly.
*****
TWO YEARS AGO:
"Why do you want to ruin the family’s name and reputation?" My father asked me with a look of sadness in his eyes. I knew he was hurt by my actions but I loved Michael so much.
Maybe if I tried to convince him, "Father" I started but he cut me off. "You will not marry that man and that's final"
"But I love Michael" That was the first time I would ever raise my voice, I was in so much pain just because I fell in love with a man my family was so against.
From the first time I introduced Michael to them and they found out that he was the son of dad’s ex-competitor in the business class world, they have refused me from having anything to do with him.
A few years ago, rumors had spread like wildfire that my family was responsible for his father’s death but no one dared raise a finger against my family as my father was both rich and influential.
Michael never saw my family the same way the public did, he once said in front of the media that whatever happened to his family was a mere accident and it could have been anyone, I believed him wholeheartedly, and against the wishes of my family, I accepted to marry him and that was when my misery began.
My family disowned me a few days before my wedding, a shock I would never be able to get over but Michael stood there to console me at least not until after our wedding and I began to see his true colors.
On our wedding night, I expected to have the best night of my life but instead, Michael made me stand and watch him f**k another woman in our bedroom.
I was turned into an object of mockery and amusement. My worth retarded so much that I was now seen as a maid in my own husband’s house. His family made me work until break point and occasionally I would starve and weep all night praying that he would change or even stop his habit of making me watch him make love to another woman.
I thought about running away but there was no one to run to, my father had long cut all connections with me and Michael had warned me sternly not to communicate with them.
My life became even more miserable when his ex-girlfriend, Lisa came into the picture and Andrew turned me into her helper, I watched them make love day and night and I was unable to say or do anything.
Even still I had hoped for redemption badly and it seemed my prayers had been answered because a week ago I discovered I was pregnant with his child, I knew if I broke the news to Andrew there was no way he wouldn’t be happy and from there, who knows, maybe things might take a positive turn.
But things didn't play out the way I had hoped, Michael filed for a divorce.
*****
No, I wouldn't let Michael go just like that, what if I could make a difference, despite everything I still love him so much. I got up from the floor, picked up the paper, and then left the bedroom.
"Michael, I can't sign this" He was sitting in the living room working on his laptop when I stood in front of him.
"We have talked about this, I don't love you anymore and I can't stay in this marriage," He said without looking up from his laptop.
"I will not sign these papers Michael" He looked at me and burst into laughter, "You just keep making me see how much of a fool you are every minute"
"I don't understand you, how can you just change? You pursued me, you said you loved me, you made me love you Michael, I didn't ask for all of this"
"Your father killed my father" He yelled at me and got up from the chair.
"Please Michael" I pleaded
"I don't want you in my house when I get back, leave while I'm being nice June," He said and then walked out of the room, he didn't even look back when I winced in pain after falling to the ground.
That was when it became crystal clear that Michael was never in love with me, this marriage somehow only happened because he wanted to hurt me, and that he had successfully done.
I scrambled on my feet to pick up the papers and the fountain pen he left on the table before signing it. After everything I have done for Michael and his family, this is how he repaid me.
I have wasted two years of my life trying to deal with his silly mother and sister but now that it was finally over, I would make sure that I paid Michael back for every angle struggle I had ever gone through.
When I am done with Micha
el, he will finally realize that I am not one he should have messed with.
