THE THICKNESS OF BLOOD Chapter 1: The Day Everything Changed The rain fell in steady sheets, drumming against the rusted roof of the old family house. Inside, silence filled every corner except for the slow ticking of a wall clock that had survived three generations. Twenty-four-year-old Daniel stood beside the window, watching the storm swallow the road that led into the village. His father had always said, "A storm never comes without carrying something with it." Daniel never understood those words until that day. His mother sat quietly in the corner, her hands wrapped around an old wooden box she had refused to open for years. Her eyes were red from crying, yet she spoke no words. "Mother," Daniel asked softly, "what is inside that box?" She looked at him with a mixture of fear and sorrow. "It contains the truth," she whispered. "And some truths are heavier than death." Before Daniel could ask another question, loud knocks echoed through the house. Three men dressed in black stood outside. Their faces were unfamiliar, but their expressions carried authority. "We've come for the box," the oldest of them said. "It belongs to our family now." Daniel stepped in front of his mother. "No one is taking anything from this house." The old man smiled, but there was no kindness in it. "You are brave," he said. "But bravery without knowledge is dangerous. You have no idea whose blood runs through your veins." Those words struck Daniel harder than any blow. The visitors left with a warning. "We will return. Next time, we won't ask." As their vehicle disappeared into the rain, Daniel turned back to his mother. She slowly opened the wooden box. Inside lay a faded photograph, an old journal stained with age, and a silver pendant engraved with a family crest Daniel had never seen before. His mother took a deep breath. "It's time you learned who your father really was." Outside, thunder shook the earth. Inside, a secret that had slept for decades was finally beginning to awaken.
