Chapter 1.
The day did not break as quickly as I had expected. It obviously had to do with the effect of the alcohol I had taken last night. My friend Esther had hosted a birthday party at her place, and for reasons best known to her, fixed it for the evening of a working day.
I attended anyway, but had to leave before it ended. Needless to say, I slept very late. As I rolled from one edge of the bed to the other, I wished the day would break sooner.
I fished out my phone from under the pillow to have a quick look at the time. It was 3 AM. I pulled the cloth cover over myself to have a little more sleep until 5 AM when I would finally wake up to start preparing for work. A few minutes later, I slept off.
I woke up at the expected time and immediately commenced my daily activities. I quicklydid my early morning exercise, washed my dishes and prepared a quick breakfast, in that order.
I was born a werewolf, as revealed to me by my father’s sister whom I lived with for many years as soon as my mother died. My father was the Alpha of the Shiny Ivory pack of Werewolves.
According to Aunt Debbie, my mother, who was also a wolf, found my father who was her mate and she automatically became the Luna. She and my father ran the pack, together with the Betawho was his second in command. It was quite a sizeable community of wolves then, and we were all living together as a pack then, according to the story I was told. I was very young then.
Then my father died. The circumstances of his death were not made very clear to me, but I concluded that it was due to natural causes. My mother died not too long after because she could not live for long without her mate
That’s how it is with Werewolves. The bond between them is so strong that one partner would find it hard to survive if their mate dies.
Perhaps because I was too young to take over the pack(I was only two years old then) or maybe because there was a Beta who could take over, I could not assume control of the pack. My father’s Beta, then took over the pack.
From the time my mother died, I had lived with my aunt Debbie, who was human. She was not a Werewolf and was not a Pack member at that time or any other time, for that matter.
Aunty Debbie it was who trained me right from age two through elementary school and right to college where I have now graduated with a degree in Business Administration.
Upon graduation from college, I got a job as a sales representative with a software company here in the city. Though I no more live with Aunt Debbie, we still keep in touch and speak on the phone quite often. She has been reminding me that I belong to a pack and that sooner or later I should be re-united with them. She has even committed herself to help me back in touch with my pack members.
Of course, Aunty Debbie had the information. She knew the Beta who later became the Alpha when my father died. Though she doesn’t have a lot more information like who the other pack members were, apart from my mum. You know, Werewolves can be very secretive.
So, the two important tasks I have ahead of me are to find my pack and more importantly, to find my mate .Most of the time, I used to feel that I’m a rogue wolf, but my wolf, which lies within me, have often told me to put aside that notion. I can’t be called a rogue wolf but I’ll rather describe myself as a lost wolf. Yes, because I didn’t run away from my pack, rather I became separated from my pack at a very tender age due to circumstances beyond my control.
Even Aunt Debbie has told me never to see myself as a rogue wolf. That I’m a wolf who has been separated from her pack and who will one day be re-united with them. She also assured me that I would occupy a leading position with time.
The intense search for my Pack started as soon as I shifted for the first time at the age of 17. Since then, I had taken full control of my wolf. I have shifted into my wolf as many times as I wish since that very first time. All I just need is a little space to run around and bingo, I turn into a wolf.
As soon as I finished having my breakfast, I headed for the office. I greeted a few other workers who were also arriving as we made our way into the building housing the software company where I work.
I would not describe the work as drudgery, though the hours are long. It is a 7 AM to 5 PM job, Mondays to Fridays. Though the pay is good compared to that of other companies in the same industry, it could be tedious at times.
By the time I settled in my desk, my friend and co-worker, Sophie was already on her seat. We share the same office.
Sophie is not the only colleague that is close to me in our office set up. But she is the closest to me by far. I can safely refer to her as my closest confidant here.
She has blonde hair, blue eyes and dark skin. She is a bit older than me. While she is 25 years old, I had just clicked 21. Despite the little age gap, we get along very well. By
“Good morning, Naomi,” Sophie greeted.
“Morning Sophie,” I replied.
“Thanks goodness, it’s another Friday,” she observed. “Yep, I’m happy to see yet another weekend,” I noted. "So how do you plan to spend the weekend,” She asked, grinning.
I know she was grinning because she knows I would spend it with Richard, my boyfriend .She only wanted to gauge my mood, which was okay.
“With Richard, of course,” I replied. She shrugged at my answer. “Do enjoy yourself then,” She replied.
With that, we ended the discussion. The day went on smoothly at the office. At closing time, I took my bag and headed home.
After dinner at my modest one bedroom apartment, I was completely relaxed. I felt my wolf starting to become restless. I quickly removed my clothes and turned into a black wolf. I then took a run within my apartment.
After I was done running, I jumped into my bed and lay down to sleep for the night, still in my wolf form. Within a few minutes, I was fast asleep.
I woke up the following morning, feeling upbeat about the forthcoming events for today, being Saturday and for the rest of the weekend. But I was still in my wolf form. I had to shift back to my human form and very fast too because Richard could call any moment from now.
I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. Within seconds, I had shifted back to my human form. It was effortless. It has been so since after my first shift.
Richard does not know that I’m a wolf. He believes I’m human. It’s an aspect of my life that I’ve completely hidden away from him. He has never had any reason to suspect because I’ve never given him any reason to do so.
Not only Richard, all those whom I’ve dated since I started dating at age 17 did not know I’m a wolf. I deliberately hid that information from all of them. For Richard, I intend to not tell him until I find my mate.
To say he would be devastated when he eventually knows would be an understatement. Even Aunt Debbie says it because she knows about our relationship.
As a matter of fact, she is full of nothing but pity for him whenever she talks about Richard. She says a wolf cannot get too deeply involved romantically with a human because it would only lead to heartbreak. She said the bond between me and my mate is so strong that every other romantic relationship I have with a human will end as soon as I find my mate. And I have no reason to doubt her especially since I took control of my wolf.
As I was still processing my thoughts about Richard, my phone rang. I picked it up. The caller ID showed that it was Richard on the line. “Hello Richard.” I said. “Hello, how was your night?” He asked. “Fine, darling,” I replied.
“Naomi, I’m sorry for not telling you this before now. But I guess it’s also a way of giving you a surprise package. Get ready, I’ll be at your place in the next one hour. I’m taking you out to a cool place to give you a special weekend treat.”
I blushed. “Very considerate of you, Richard. Don’t bother that you didn’t inform me before hand. Just like you rightly indicated, it’s even a surprise package. I do trust your judgements, as usual. So, I’ll be expecting you.”
“OK,” he said. With that, he ended the call. That was vintage Richard as usual. Very considerate and always wanting to give me a surprise. We’ve been together for about two years now.
Our paths crossed when I attended a party hosted by one of my female friends. He was also one of the guests.I was attracted to him by his extremely good looks and the confidence with which he carried himself around.
Richard was tall, around 6 feet. He had short, brown hair and blue eyes. He was wearing black two piece suit with a pair of black shoes to match. Apart from his good looks, his dressing was also impressive. After the party, I found a way to get to him and we hit it off immediately.
As I glanced at the time on my phone, I put my immediate thoughts on hold and proceeded to go get ready for Richard's arrival.
I went into the bathroom and got myself under the shower spray. After adjusting the temperature to warm, I gave myself a very good wash. After I was done, I toweled off and moved back into my bedroom closet to put on something befitting, and wait for Richard.
Soon enough, Richard arrived and we set out for the special place where he was taking me to. He was behind the steering wheel. The traffic was not heavy, being a Saturday so the journey was very smooth.
We soon arrived at our destination. It turned out to be a beautiful restaurant in the downtown area of the city. Though I know the place, but I’ve never been a patron there.
We entered and chose a seat not too far away from the entrance. After we were seated, Richard grinned. “Here we are, darling, you are welcome.” I nodded, smiled back at him and said, “Thank you, Richard. "I gave Richard a thumbs up as I turned my head and looked around the interior of the restaurant, taking in its sights and sounds. It was simply adorable.
A waitress came over to our table and handed out the menu.. As soon as I saw her, my wolf became agitated and restless. I struggled to keep it in check because I didn’t want Richard to suspect anything.
As she handed over our menus to us, she gave me a glare. I also fixed my gaze on her as my wolf reacted to her presence and gave me the message: SHE IS A WOLF. SHE IS NOT HUMAN! She quickly took away her eyes, asking us what we would love to drink while we made a decision on what to order.
Richard looked at me. “What you drink?” I ran my right hand through my hair, looked briefly into space and replied “Soda.” Richard smiled, looked at the waitress who was still waiting and said, “Beer for me.” She looked back and glanced at me twice as she went off to get our drinks
As she went, I took a little time to reflect on what had happened. We Werewolves do recognize each other when we meet. We may not belong to the same pack. It doesn’t matter. In fact, wolves who belong to different packs are usually hostile to each other. That explains why she gave me that hostile look as soon as she recognized me as a wolf who does not belong to her pack.
Soon after, she returned with our drinks. We did justice to it while we carefully selected our food. I asked Richard to choose for me and he selected one of the Sandwiches for us.By the time she came to pack the residue, we had made our choice.
We were soon done with the food and desserts. Richard paid the bills and we left.
Four months later:.
I had taken a weekend away from my city to go visit my Aunt Debbie. The visit had been long overdue as she had been requesting it for quite a while.
Richard had requested to come with me but I had politely refused because it wouldn’t be appropriate for him. My romance with Richard would be at the top of whatever my Aunt would discuss
“Naomi” aunt Debbie called out from the living room. “Come here and let us thrash out the issues that brought you here.” I was in my room reading my favorite novel when her voice rang out. “Yes aunty I am coming,” I said.
“I’m your mother by virtue of the fact that you lived with me for many years .It’s my duty to guide you aright.” She said. “What have you observed again, aunty,” I asked. “Everything,” she replied. “The way you are carrying on with that Richard of yours shows that you’re not conscious of your wolf identity. You should realize that you have a Pack which your father founded and you have a very important role in the Pack.. Romance should not be your priority for now.”
“I quite appreciate your concern for my future, aunty. I know I’m a wolf and belong to a Pack.. But we have not even found the Pack yet. So what do you advise I do about Richard? Do I break the relationship?” I asked. Aunty Debbie looked me in the eyes and then shook her head.
“You might not break the relationship now, but ultimately it would be broken when you eventually tell him the truth You can’t help it. So whatever you are doing with Richard now is temporary. It would sooner or later come to an end.” She said matter-of -factly.“Don’t let him get too emotionally involved such that he wouldn’t be able to leave you when it’s time. My dear, why don’t you tell him now that you’re not a human? That you’re a Werewolf?”
My shoulders fell. “But aunty, I...I... can’t tell him now. The news would be too shocking for him. He will pass out. And when he recovers, he would leave me. ”Aunty Debbie smiled, placed my hand in hers, and used her other hand to pat me on the back. She very well knew I had become alarmed and she knows she needs to reassure me.
“Naomi, I think you should let him know now before it is too late. Not doing so now will mean postponing the evil day. What do you think, my dear?” My brow furrowed. “I do experience heat from time to time and since I’ve not found my mate yet, Richard comes in handy to help me cool it. If I lose him now by revealing the secret to him, who will stand in before I find my mate?” I wondered aloud.
Aunty Debbie laughed. “I understand you, my daughter. You are a full adult now at 21. You have s****l needs. I also do know that as a wolf, you have a higher s****l urge than a human, what they call 'heat. I know that you go through heat a lot and whenever that happens, you should know how to handle such issues. But I still need you to tell Richard the truth,” she insisted.
I shrugged. “OK, I will do so, aunty.”
“Has he talked to you about marriage?” She asked. “Not yet,” I replied. “But he is very much in love such that I know he will broach the subject very soon.”
“Well, just do as I say and let’s see how it goes,” Aunty Debbie said. “Yes ma’am,” I replied. She stretched her legs and then looked at me. “As far as the issue of Richard is concerned, I think we have finished for now. You can go and have your rest now, Naomi. We will talk more over breakfast tomorrow morning.” With that, I stood up from the couch and went into my room.
That was vintage Aunt Debbie. Even at 21, she still looked at me as the little baby that she single handedly raised since from the age of two. I am not complaining though. Even up till now, I still enjoy being around her whenever I take the time to visit like I’m presently doing.
Aunt Debbie is 55 years old. She looks every inch of it. She has long, dark hair which flows back reaching her shoulders. Her blue eyes and pointed nose sit well on her oval shaped face. At a height of about 5’6” she is pretty at her age.
As we ate breakfast the next morning, Aunt Debbie told me she had a good piece of news for me. She grinned at me and said, “Naomi, I have some sweet news for you.” My face brightened with excitement as i dropped my fork and leaned forward. “What is the news, Aunty, I’m eager to hear it.” She grinned and eyed me. “I have found your pack.” I sighed.
“At last!” I exclaimed as I dropped my fork the second time. “This is the best piece of news I’ve received in a long time,” I said with tears streaming down my eyes. Aunty Debbie was beaming with smiles as she watched me betray my emotions. Instinctively, I stood up and leaned across the dining table to embrace my aunt, causing her to also drop her fork.
“How...how...did you pull this through, aunty? "I asked, surprised. Aunty Debbie cleared her throat. “It’s quite a long story, my daughter, but I’ll try to make it short. Ever since you left here to and take up your job in the city, I’ve been investigating, digging up information about the Shiny Ivory Pack that your father set up and headed,” she said. “ i had to figure out whether the pack still exists and who are the present members. Luckily, I’ve been able to discover that the pack exists in a location in this town.” A wave of excitement swept through me. “Then you must have met some of them?” I asked. She nodded. “Yes, I’ve been in touch with the current Alpha and he said he would be excited to meet you. So, prepare to meet them before you return to the city.”
Aunt Debbie's revelation was heart-warming. Now I have found my pack. The only task ahead of me now is to become the Delta of the Pack.. Would this task i have set for myself be realized? Only time will tell.
