Chapter 12 Their trip to Vauxhall did not have a very promising start. They arrived promptly at seven, Nick paid the four-shilling admittance for them, and immediately his sisters began bickering. Charlotte and Violet assumed they would begin with a stroll along the Grand Walk, but Lucy wanted to see the arches of the South Walk. Nick knew that Charlotte and Violet preferred the Grand Walk because it was more popular, but it was also so crowded that Nick couldn’t imagine there was much chance of gentlemen admiring Violet, which was no doubt their aim, so he ruled in Lucy’s favor. Charlotte’s disapproval and Violet’s sulks lasted for the first half-hour, but before long Charlotte became interested in the endless galleries, and Violet admired the circus horses almost as much as Lucy did.
