A New Friendship?

Nina's POV Whoa, what was that? The moment his hand made contact with mine, it was electrifying. It sent chills down my spine and butterflies deep in my stomach. But, almost as fast as he touches me, the quicker he lets go. "Who are you? I have never seen you before," he asked. "My name is Nina. I stay a little ways away from the packhouse, and I am homeschooled and an introvert, so you probably never seen me before at any of the events or school." I felt blood rush to my cheeks from my nervousness. "I don't think you should be standing in front of the door when all the other newbies are already where they are supposed to be. I get that you're special, but try not to stand out too much. We work in unity here." he said while his voice sounded annoyed. Wow, this guy was a complete asshole. "I'll do my best," I responded and put on the fakest smile I could conjure up. That's when a very gentle voice hit the back of my neck. "Would you like me to take you to where the others are?" he said sweetly. "If you would tell me where they are, I think I could manage. I would hate to be a bother." I responded shyly. "No problem" I don't know if it was how he said it or how gentle he was when he grabbed my hand, but it made my heart skip a beat. "What's your name?" I asked him. "Names Don, or you may want to call me Caption Don, haha." "Oh, my gawd! That was you???" I giggle lightly. "Sorry, I was really nervous, and I get weird when I'm nervous." "Don't worry; I found it cute." He stopped, but I didn't realize it and walked right into his huge back. "I am so sorry. I was distracted by the fact you called me cute." "Well, I was only being an honest angel. Here we are; please don't hesitate to call me if you need anything," he said while kissing the top of my hand. "A...Aye, Aye, captain," I stuttered. Wow, someone thought of me as cute! I screamed internally. "Looks like the last of us is here. Please grab an apron and let us begin." the chief said. "Umm, excuse me, could you please show me where the aprons are?" I whisper to the person next to me. "OMG, do you not have eyes? They are right here," She said as she handed me one. "Sorry, I am blind, but thank you very much," I lowered my head, ashamed of myself. "Don't expect me to be sorry. If you want to work here in the packhouse, you must fend for yourself. Do not be a burden on the Alpha or anyone else for that matter; otherwise, it's best you back out now." I chose to ignore her, but she was right, making me feel even worse. I have to make sure I can do this on my own. I have to make sure I don't rely on anyone because once this chance is over, I will have to go back to nothingness...nobody. I can't do that. I know I cannot handle it too much longer. "Each of you will have 20 mins to cook me something that you are good at making, and this will help me decide who I will be keeping in this kitchen and who will change to laundry. Let's get to it then." the chief spoke. One-by-one, the others prepared their dish, and it did not sound like the chef was pleased with any of them. We continued, and then everything went silent. Here was that smell again. It's the jackass again. "My my. Alpha, what brings you here?" The chef asked. "I was hungry. Any good dishes made I could try?" "Not yet, we are down to the final two, and it looks like she is almost finished. Come take a seat." It was him again. Wait, he was Alpha??? The butthole from earlier was THE ALPHA!!! Oh no, I am screwed. All of these thoughts came to my mind until I heard the words: "Oh wow, this is absolutely delicious! The best dish anyone has made all day. Not that that surprises me one bit Tally." "Who knew you could cook so well, Tally? I always thought you would be a grub monster forever," the Alpha laughed. "Well, I figured that if I was to be Luna one day, I better know how to cook for my Alpha." Everyone giggled after she said that. So the rude girl's name was Tally. Good to know so I can stay away from her. "Your next, my dear." the chef said, tapping me on my shoulder. "You have most ingredients in front of you. Do I need to explain which is which?" "No chef. I am used to the feelings and smells of different ingredients, so I should be just fine." I said proudly. So many recipes begin clouding my mind, almost overwhelming me. I took in a deep breath and caught the scent of shrimp. I took in another deep breath and caught the scent of lemon and pepper. This made it easier for me to choose. Plus, I was pretty good at making this dish. I gathered all of my ingredients and began cooking my heart out. It took me roughly 15 minutes to complete, but my dish was ready. I walked over to the last place I was, feel around for a table, and placed the plate there. Luckily she was still sitting there. Almost as soon as I sat, the plate of food was down; everyone began to gasp. "She cooked the same thing as Tally" "No way she is blind. Did you see how well she moved around the kitchen?' "She's just doing this for attention" "I bet those are contacts in her eye," they all started to gossip. I put my head down, pretending not to hear. I guess Tally made the same dish. "Shrimp Scampi again, I see. Let's see how well it compares to her almost perfect dish." I could hear them open her mouth and when her teeth hit the fork. "I must say Tally's dish made it hard for your dish to succeed, but somehow you have done just that." She said while tapping on the back of my hand. "Emmm." I heard the Alpha hum under his voice, which shocked my core. But he never said anything; all I could hear was the fork hitting the plate and him chewing, which made me smile. "Okay, tomorrow when you arrive, you will know who will be at what station. Thank you all for coming, and have a great evening." I reached for my cane, but it wasn't there. I was sure that I left it here. No, I am confident I left it here. "Excuse me, have anyone seen my cane?" Nobody answered. They all just kept walking. Well, I have no choice. I guess I will find it myself. I begin walking slowly with my hands out. Hoping to touch a countertop or anything that could support me from falling, but before I could make that happen, I tripped on someone's foot, hitting my head on the corner of the doorknob. "I am so sorry. I did not see you there. Where is your cane, my dear?". Tally said. "Ouch. How can I see better than you, and I'm blind?" I said out of frustration. I heard her footsteps stomping in my direction before she grabbed my hair and whispered in my ear, "look, you pathetic piece of sh*t. Stay out of my way, and I will stay out of yours. Don't you ever try to one-up me again? Understand?" Before I could answer, she let go of my hair and shrieked, "Ouch. Let go of me." "Give her back her cane and apologize?" "What who do you thin... Sorry Beta, I did not know it was you. She slipped, and I was helping her up, right Alpha?" "By her hair? Yea sure. Just give her the cane back." Don said. "Thank you," I said while holding tears in my eyelids. No one had ever stood up for me before, and he did it without even knowing me. Even the Alpha sat back and watched. I hope we will be close if I work here. "You don't have to thank me. Anybody would have stepped in." Don replied. "Apparently, not anybody," I said, turning my head in the Alpha's direction. I headed to the front door, ready for this long walk when Don stopped me to ask if I needed a ride home. "No, thank you, I don't mind the walk. Plus, it will only be about 30 minutes since it's more downhill than on the way here." "30 minutes!" he yelled. "No way, I am taking you home. It is way too hot for you to be walking." "Fine, a damsel in distress can't say not to her chariot." The ride was super comfortable on the way back home. Don was a chatterbox, which made me feel good because I didn't know if I would be able to keep up a casual conversation on my own. "Hey, don't worry about those girls. There are mean girls in every pack." "I don't worry at all. I know I am blind, so when people say it, it's kind of like they are stating the obvious. But I won't say it doesn't sometimes hurt... not being normal." I said, looking towards the window. The car stopped, and I heard him move in his seat, grabbing my chin. "Hey, who's to say what normal is or isn't. From my perspective, you are too normal, like normie the normal. Plus, she's just jealous that you can cook better than her and are far more beautiful than her." "Yeah, sure." I laugh. "But thanks for trying to cheer me up, and thanks for the ride." "Would you like me to pick you up tomorrow?" "No, you do not have to do that. But it would make a great birthday gift if you did." "Your birthday is tomorrow?" "Yes indeed. A fresh 18," I said with the biggest grin. "Then I must court the princess. See you in the morning." He said while kissing the back of my hand. "Sssee...Youuu." I try to get out while he is laughing. What a great day! I thought until I reached my front door.
