The Night Fate Changed My Scent
The mirror reflected a woman who looked ready for a perfect future, but deep inside, I felt like I was standing on the edge of something I couldn’t explain. The soft golden lights of the dressing room made my champagne-colored gown glow against my skin, the silk hugging my body in a way that felt both beautiful and foreign.
Tonight was supposed to be the start of my forever. I should have felt safe. Instead, a strange unease sat heavy in my chest, like my instincts were trying to warn me about something my heart refused to see.
“You look stunning, Aria.”
I met Lila’s eyes through the mirror and smiled. She stood behind me, arms folded, expression warm and proud. She had been my best friend since university my closest confidant, my chosen family. If anyone deserved to stand beside me tonight, it was her.
“You think Daniel will like it?” I asked quietly.
“I think he won’t be able to breathe when he sees you,” she said, stepping forward to adjust a loose curl near my shoulder.
I laughed softly, trying to calm the nervous excitement twisting inside me. Tonight was my engagement announcement. Daniel’s family had organized everything a grand event in one of the most exclusive hotels in the city. Business elites, investors, powerful families… all waiting downstairs. My life was about to change forever.
“I still can’t believe this is real,” I admitted.
Lila’s smile tightened for a fraction of a second before returning. “You deserve this life,” she said.
I squeezed her hand, grateful. “I wouldn’t be here without you.”
For a moment, her fingers stiffened in mine, then she slowly pulled away. “You should go down. Everyone’s waiting.”
I nodded and picked up my clutch, ignoring the strange chill that crawled across the back of my neck as I walked toward the door.
The ballroom doors opened, and music spilled into the hallway. Soft piano notes mixed with laughter and the hum of wealth and power. Crystal chandeliers sparkled above guests dressed in designer suits and gowns. My eyes searched automatically for Daniel, and I found him near the stage.
But something felt wrong.
His posture was rigid. His expression pale. And he wasn’t looking at me. He kept glancing toward the side entrance like he was waiting for something… or someone.
I slowed my steps, unease growing stronger.
Then the event host spoke. “Ladies and gentlemen, before tonight’s special announcement, someone would like to say a few words.”
That wasn’t part of the plan.
My heart began to pound as I turned toward the stage.
Then I saw Lila walking toward the microphone.
Confusion tightened in my chest. Maybe she was planning a surprise speech. That sounded like her. Emotional. Loyal. Sweet.
But when she grabbed the microphone, her hand was shaking.
Daniel stepped onto the stage beside her, and the room fell into an uncomfortable silence.
“I’m sorry,” Lila said softly, her voice trembling. “I can’t keep lying anymore.”
Cold dread spread through my stomach.
She placed her hand slowly over her abdomen.
“I’m pregnant".
Gasps rippled across the room.
The world tilted around me.
“And the father… is Daniel.”
The words hit like physical force. My hearing rang. My vision blurred. I watched Daniel step closer to her, guilt written across his face. I walked forward slowly, barely aware of the crowd parting around me. I stopped below the stage and stared up at them my best friend and my fiancé standing side by side like I had never existed.
“I didn’t mean for it to happen like this,” Lila whispered through tears.
Something inside me shattered quietly. I didn’t scream. I didn’t cry. I simply turned and walked out of the ballroom, leaving behind the life I thought was mine.
The cold night air hit my skin as I stepped outside, my hands shaking as my phone buzzed. I stared at the screen. Unknown number.
I opened the message.
This was planned months ago.
Another message followed a photo of Lila sitting across from a man in an expensive black suit. His face was shadowed, but something about him radiated danger. Power. Authority. The timestamp read six months ago.
Before Daniel proposed.
Before everything.
My heart pounded as another message appeared.
You were never meant to belong to them.
My pulse roared in my ears.
Then the final message came.
Your mate has been looking for you.
The streetlight above me flickered as a sudden, unfamiliar heat spread beneath my skin sharp, electric, alive.
And for the first time in my life…
I swore I smelled smoke, rain, and something wild… like a wolf… coming from my own skin.
