"Bird Island”
There was a small island just opposite the port of Almeria and a small castle on which it was also used as a watchtower. In this castle, as many as 10 soldiers were on constant guard to protect the city against pirate attacks, and to warn against the danger of enemy soldiers and to provide preliminary protection, along with a dozen cannons placed inside the castle. It was connected by a small road from land to the port. It was also called “Bird Island” or “Gull Island” because it was an island where birds were constantly placed. Only senior soldiers and administrators could enter the island, which the civilian population could not enter.
