The Human Among Wolves
Charlotte Smith stood at the edge of the forest, staring at the massive stone gates of Moonshadow Academy. Even from a distance, the academy looked less like a school and more like a fortress carved from myth. The stone walls were dark and ancient, veined with silver that shimmered faintly in the morning light. Spires pierced the sky like claws, and long crimson banners bearing the insignias of the most powerful wolf packs snapped sharply in the wind. The air itself felt different here—heavier, charged, alive. Charlotte’s stomach twisted. This was a place where strength ruled. Where dominance wasn’t just expected—it was required. And Charlotte had none. At least, that’s what everyone believed. She adjusted the strap of her worn backpack and inhaled slowly, grounding herself. The forest behind her felt safer somehow, as if she could still turn around, disappear into the trees, pretend she’d never received the letter embossed with a silver wolf crest. Humans weren’t meant to survive here. They certainly weren’t meant to enroll. But Charlotte had a plan. Stay invisible. Stay clever. Keep the truth buried. If she did that, she could survive three years. Maybe. A ripple of movement along the path made her tense. A group of students strode past her, laughter low and confident. They didn’t walk—they prowled. Even in human form, something primal clung to them. Their shoulders were too straight, their gazes too sharp. Power radiated from them in waves she could almost feel against her skin. One of them slowed. He was tall—easily over six feet—with dark hair that fell carelessly across his forehead. But it was his eyes that made her pulse stutter. Amber. Not golden. Not brown. True amber, glowing faintly in the morning light. He stopped walking. And stared directly at her. Charlotte’s breath caught. She recognized him instantly from the academy roster she’d memorized. Ethan Drake. Alpha heir of the Moonshadow Pack. Future leader. Dangerous. His gaze swept over her—not mockingly, not dismissively. Assessing. Like he was cataloguing her existence. For one terrifying second, she thought he could see straight through her. She ducked her head and kept walking. Don’t react. Don’t challenge. Don’t exist. The gates groaned open as students passed through. The moment Charlotte stepped inside, the noise hit her like a physical force. Chaos. Controlled chaos—but chaos nonetheless. The central courtyard buzzed with activity. Several students were in mid-shift, bones snapping and reforming with fluid ease as they transitioned into massive wolves. Their fur shimmered in shades of silver, black, russet. Claws tore across stone training dummies. Fangs flashed. Sparks of blue-white energy crackled in the air as two wolves collided in a blur of speed and muscle. Charlotte felt like she’d stepped into another world. Every sense screamed at her that she didn’t belong. Whispers followed her as she crossed the courtyard. “That’s her.” “They actually let a human in?” “She won’t last a week.” Each word was quiet—but wolves didn’t need to shout. Her shoulders tightened, but she kept her chin level. Invisible. Remember. “Are you serious?” The voice was sharp and laced with disbelief. Charlotte turned to face a girl with sleek silver hair cascading down her back and eyes the color of storm clouds. She stood with perfect posture, arms crossed, expression curled into disdain. “A human?” the girl repeated. “Here? You’re either brave… or stupid.” Charlotte swallowed. “I… I can manage.” The silver-haired girl’s lips curved into a slow, unimpressed smirk. “Manage?” She stepped closer, lowering her voice. “This place eats the weak.” A flicker of something protective sparked in Charlotte’s chest—but she forced it down. “I’m not as weak as I look,” she said softly. The girl studied her for a beat longer, then scoffed. “We’ll see.” With that, she turned and disappeared into the moving crowd. Charlotte exhaled shakily. This was going to be a long year. The interior of Moonshadow Academy was just as imposing as the exterior. High vaulted ceilings arched overhead. Chandeliers fashioned from crystal and bone cast fractured light across polished stone floors. The scent of pine, smoke, and something wild lingered in the air. After collecting her schedule—several teachers eyeing her with thinly veiled skepticism—she navigated the winding corridors to the dormitory wing. Room 214. She hesitated before pushing the door open. Inside, sunlight streamed through tall windows. Two beds sat on opposite sides of the room. One was already claimed—neatly made, books stacked in perfect order. A petite girl sat cross-legged atop it, green eyes bright with curiosity as she scribbled into a notebook filled with detailed notes. She looked up immediately. “You must be the human,” she said, not unkindly. Charlotte braced herself. “That obvious?” The girl grinned. “Relax. I’m Jenna.” She hopped off the bed and extended a hand. “And before you panic—I don’t bite.” Charlotte blinked. “That’s reassuring.” Jenna laughed. “Trust me, you’re going to need at least one ally here.” Charlotte shook her hand, grateful for the warmth in her expression. “I’ll take all the help I can get.” “Good,” Jenna said lightly. “Because half this school thinks you’re either insane or a political experiment.” “That’s comforting.” Jenna shrugged. “Welcome to Moonshadow.” Charlotte had just begun unpacking when a loud commotion erupted outside—shouts, growls, the unmistakable c***k of shifting bones. Jenna’s head snapped toward the window. “Oh no.” “What?” Charlotte asked, already moving closer. In the training yard below, a crowd had formed a tight circle. At the center stood a boy backed against the stone wall. Three larger students surrounded him, their forms flickering between human and wolf, aggression bleeding off them like heat. “Pack dispute,” Jenna muttered. “It happens.” One of the larger boys shifted fully, fur bursting through skin in a fluid motion. A massive gray wolf lunged. Charlotte’s heart slammed against her ribs. This wasn’t training. This was real. The cornered boy stumbled. Claws flashed. Before Charlotte realized what she was doing, she pushed the window open. “Charlotte, wait—” Jenna started. But it was too late. Something inside Charlotte snapped. Fear. Anger. Instinct. Heat surged through her veins—bright and blinding. Her palms burned, light spilling between her fingers like liquid lightning. A pulse exploded outward. A wave of white-gold energy shot across the yard, striking the two wolves mid-lunge. They were thrown sideways as if hit by an invisible wall, skidding across stone. Silence fell. Utter, stunned silence. The remaining attacker froze. So did everyone else. Charlotte stood at the window, hands glowing faintly before the light flickered out. Her breath came in shallow gasps. What… did I just do? She had never done that before. Never in front of anyone. Gasps rippled through the crowd. “That wasn’t human.” “No way—” “Did you see that?” Slowly—deliberately—Ethan Drake stepped forward from the edge of the gathering. He hadn’t been fighting. He had been watching. His amber eyes lifted, locking onto hers across the distance. There was no mockery there now. No dismissal. Only sharp, focused recognition. And something else. Challenge. Charlotte’s pulse pounded in her ears. She had come here to stay invisible. Instead, she had just announced herself to the entire academy. And judging by the intensity in Ethan Drake’s gaze— Moonshadow had just noticed her back.
