Chapter one.
I was born in 958BC, I never knew my father and my mother had left the day I was born, leaving me with my Aunt and Uncle and their young son Roran. I lived a happy life with them until I found out the truth about my birth the day my Aunt died when I was just 14, she died telling me the truth. I did not blame nor hate them but if it was possible I loved them even more. My cousin Roran, was nearly of age to fight in the king’s army now but he did not wish too so a local blacksmith was hiring him as his second lead hand but it still meant that he would have to leave the village. I did not want him to go he was my whole world, the others girls in the village did not like me and the boys just scared me so Roran had always been my shield. The night before he left I worked all day on making more trinkets to sell at the night show, I headed into the village with Roran for he wished to see Katrina one more time before he left. I was the first to see them, 25 of the king’s soldiers that had come to our village to collect all the boys that had come of age. I began to tremble as they came up to my cart, 4 of them stopped and looked at my things. “Well what kind of treasure do we have here men, where have they been hiding you sweetheart?” They laughed at his humor; I bowed my head and said. “I do not understand your question sir.” He took hold of my chin and lifted my head to meet his eyes. “You are very beautiful for a young girl and believe me when I say that I see a lot of girls, what is your age?” I knew what he was getting at but I did not wish to answer him for I had no intention to marry just because I am of age to wed. “I am 15 sirs.” His eyes never left mine, “Well we might just have to see if your parents would consider releasing you before you’re of age. Would you like to marry one of the king’s most favored men?” Just as he asked Roran came up to me. “I told you to pack this up not bore these men with your ideal chatter. I am sorry sir’s my wife to be is having some problems with learning her place.” He nodded at Roran, and then whispered to me. “I would still like to speak with your parents, tell them to have lunch ready for tomorrow.” I quickly packed up then went and got the items that I needed for dinner. While my uncle spoke with Roran, I cooked Rorans favorite meal an hour later we were sitting down for our last meal together for at least 6 months. Just as I was pulling desert out of the fire I saw the soldiers from before, I froze making Roran run up behind me to see what was wrong. “Eve, go hide. No matter what you hear you stay put.” My uncle had made a room underneath our house in case war ever started again. I went straight there and hid, I could see and hear everything that was happening above me, minutes later there was a knock at the door. “Hello, can we help you sir?” my uncle asked, without a word they all walked inside. “I am here about the young girl I saw with this boy earlier. I wish to seek her hand in marriage, as I know she is of age already to wed.” I felt like I was going to be sick, I wanted run but I knew they would hear me. “I am sorry sir but she is signed up to leave for the nunnery in 2 days, and I have not the means to stop it for I am but a farmer.” “So am I to understand that if I wish your nieces hand, I must first ride to the nunnery and then return with the paperwork dismissing her?” “It is, I will make sure she is ready for your arrival.” “I will be back in 3 day. Mark my word.” Then they turned and left, after a few minutes my uncle came to get me. “It’s safe to come out. You must leave Eve and never return here again, for nothing will be able to stop you from getting married to that solider. I will leave with Roran, change our names and stay out of trouble; you will go to Terim to a friend of mine Catiline.” He handed me 2 gold pieces while Roran packed my things. “Take your horse, stay in the spine they will not go in there. Stay to the stream, after 3 day you will come upon the biggest palm tree you have ever seen then go east for 2 more days then you will be at Terim. Go now and always know that we love you.”
