~Prologue~ The Girl Who Saved Me
Some people enter your life, and you know, almost instinctively, that nothing will ever be the same again. Dahlia was one of those people. For a long time, I thought she was the best thing that had ever happened to me. She was the girl who stood between me and the rest of the world, the one who noticed when my smile was forced and when my silence meant something more than words ever could. She knew how to make me laugh on the days I could barely stand myself. She remembered the smallest things about me, things even I had forgotten I had said. When everyone else looked through me, Dahlia looked directly at me. And when I was afraid, she made me feel as though nothing in the world could ever hurt me again. I mistook that feeling for safety. Perhaps that was my first mistake. People like to believe that danger announces itself. That it comes with a warning, a cruel smile, or a darkness in someone's eyes that should have been enough to make you run. But what if danger is gentle? What if it remembers your favorite song, lends you its jacket when you're cold, and stays awake beside you until you fall asleep? What if it learns every little thing that makes you happy, only to become the very thing you cannot imagine living without? How are you supposed to recognize a cage when, at first, it feels like home? Dahlia was my cage. I didn't know that then. I didn't know that love could become a room with no windows, or that the hands that protect you could one day become the hands that keep you from leaving. All I knew was that she had found me when I felt invisible. And I wanted her to keep finding me. Even now, years later, there are things I struggle to remember clearly. The exact moment our friendship began to change. The first time I felt afraid of losing her. The first time I realized that being loved by someone and being allowed to be free were not always the same thing. Memory is a strange thing. It softens certain edges and sharpens others. Sometimes I wonder whether I remember Dahlia as she truly was, or as the girl I desperately needed her to be. I have spent years trying to separate the two. Sometimes, I still can't. But I remember the ribbon. A small pink ribbon, carelessly torn from my hair and left on the dirty ground. I remember the laughter around me. I remember wishing I could disappear. And I remember the girl in the black leather jacket who stopped walking, turned toward me, and decided that she wasn't going to let them hurt me. She picked up my ribbon. She looked at me. And just like that, my world began to change. I didn't know her name yet. I didn't know what she was capable of. I didn't know that one day, I would look back on that moment and wonder whether she had saved me… …or whether it was the moment she first decided I belonged to her. In the beginning, I had only a pink ribbon. And a girl who picked it up from the floor.
