Ella's POV;
I made sure I set my alarm for 7:30, and I set other alarms in case that particular one didn't work.
Thankfully it did, and I was awake and dressed by 8:20.
I went downstairs to find my sister eating her breakfast.
"Morning El." She smiles at me.
"Morning Reneé." I smile back.
"At least you're actually up and awake at the right time today." She teases me.
"Yeah yeah whatever." I grin at her and she laughs.
"Ella, can I ask you something before mum comes down?" She asks and I nod whilst eating a slice of toast.
"Well, there's this guy in my chemistry class, and I really like him, and I just wanted to know how to get his attention? I asked my friends at school, and they told me to pull my skirt up and wear more makeup to catch his attention, but I'm not comfortable with that." She looks at the floor.
She's only 13. Why are other 13 year olds telling her to pull her skirt up? Wtf?
Luckily Reneé is a little innocent when it comes to boys, I mean, don't get me wrong, she can make dirty remarks as a joke sometimes, but when it came down the whole subject of boys, she was innocent, which is what she should be as a 13 year old.
She should still be using her colouring book, not hiking her bloody skirt up. Thank god she had brains.
"Listen to me, well done for not taking your "friends" advice because it's s**t. If you really want to get this guys attention, then talk to him more, hang out with him and get to know him, show him your personality, not your bloody underwear." I tell her and she laughs.
"Thank you Ella, I can always count on you for real advice." She replies.
"It's no problem, you know I'm here if you need anything, but just remember, guys your age are idiots. I mean they're still idiots when you get to my age, and they're still idiots when you get to mums age, so just don't throw yourself into anything too serious just yet, or anything you're uncomfortable with, because boys don't understand that a girl wants love and affection, so just take it slowly okay?" I tell her and she nods.
"Morning sweethearts!" Mum sings as she walks into the kitchen.
"Morning mum." We reply.
"What were you two talking about?" She asks.
"I was just helping Reneé with her maths quiz she has today." I lie.
"You didn't tell me anything about a maths test sweetie!" Mum exclaims.
"Well it's no big deal mum, I'll be fine." She smiles and mum nods.
"Well I'm going to go to school, I'll see you guys later." I say before hugging them both.
"Oh Ella, before you go, I had a call from your new English teacher last night." She says and I stop scrolling through my music on my phone and look up at her.
I swear to god if that bastard sold me out I'll kill him.
Mum and dad aren't strict parents, but they don't like me getting detentions.
"Oh really?" I try and act innocent.
Mum didn't know I had a detention last night as Reneé was the only one home when I got in because mum was working late and dad usually comes home about 5:30.
I told Reneé I had a detention, but I knew she wouldn't tell mum or dad, I trust her completely and she trusts me. That's how it works.
"Yes, he told me you stayed late last night because you were catching up on your English work, that's so good of you for using your own time to bring your grades up." She beams at me.
Reneé shoots me a weird look, so I give a 'just-go-with-it' look.
"Why didn't you tell me you stayed late?" Mum questions.
"Because it's not that big of a deal mum." I tell her.
"Nonsense! I'm so proud of you for taking the time out to study, and I know your dad will be too once I tell him!" She exclaims. "Also, Mr Wilde told me that you both arranged for him to tutor you after school weekly, so you can carry on trying to bring your grades up."
"Oh erm yes we did." I reply.
"That's so good! He told me you were staying behind tonight as well." She says.
Oh did he now?
"Oh yeah I am." I shrugged it off.
"Well I'm proud of you darling! Now go on, you don't want to be late again!" She laughs before kissing my forehead.
I decide to walk to school today as I just feel like walking.
*****************
"So yeah, I said yes and made the deal official." I finish telling Blake the events that occurred last night.
I know I can trust Blake 110% with everything. He's been my best friend since year 4, and he's never once betrayed my trust.
"Get in there you saucy devil." He winks and nudges me.
"Oh shut up." I giggle.
"Anyways, we better start walking to your boyfriends class, he might put you over his knee if you're late again." Blake wiggles his eyebrows at me and I playfully hit him.
We enter Mr Wilde's classroom and take our usual seats.
Just then, Blake's football teammates come and join us.
We usually sit on a table by ourselves because we don't really like anybody in our class.
"Hey guys! What are you doing here?" Blake greets them.
"We got transferred into this class." One of them simply says.
I've never really gotten to know Blake's teammates, but from what Blake has told me they seem like nice guys.
"Hey, Ella is it?" One of them asks me.
"Yeah it's Ella." I smile at him.
"Nice to meet you Ella. I'm Donté. This is Chase and Nate," Donté says and points to each of the boys.
"It's nice to meet you all." I smile warmly at them.
"Settle down everyone." I hear a familiar voice boom.
Everyone shuts up and stares at him.
"Right, so today we will be taking sentences that stand out to us from chapter 48-50 and explaining why they're effective and why you think the writer has used it." He tells us.
"Ah Miss Faye, you're here on time today." He smiles at me.
"I told you I would be Sir." I smile back.
"Good. Right crack on with it everyone. You can chat among yourselves, just don't be too loud and make sure you're doing work." He says.
I open my book and find chapter 48 to start with.
I read the first page and furrow my brows.
"You need help?" A voice asks.
I look up to see who asked me and it was Donté.
"You just looked confused that's all." He smiles.
"Oh, erm, I am a little." I admit.
He moves closer to me so he can help me.
"Here," He hands me some highlighters. "When you find something that stands out to you, highlight it so you don't lose what you've found." He says.
"Thank you." I say whilst taking the highlighters.
"Mr Carter, why have you moved seats?" I hear Mr Wilde say, and I look up to meet a pair of deep brown eyes.
"Oh, I was just helping Ella." He simply says.
"Well, thank you, but I can take it from here, you focus on your own work please." He tells Donté.
"Oh erm, yes sir." Donté mumbles before moving back to his original seat.
I give him an apologetic 'thank you' look, and he must have noticed as he mouths 'that's okay'.
"Miss Faye, do you understand what you're supposed to be doing?" He asks me.
"I do, but I can't find what I'm looking for." I tell him and he nods before taking a chair and placing it next to mine.
He sits down and tilts the book slightly so he can read it.
"Here, this should be your first sentence." He says and highlights it for me.
"Now, why do you think the writer has chosen to use that sentence?" He asks me.
I read the sentence slowly before answering.
"Because it creates tension, therefore drawing the reader in and making them want to read on?" I answer and he nods.
"See, you're smarter than you think Ella." He smiles at me, and I send him a gentle smile back.
"Write that down for me please." He tells me and I do as he says.
Once I've finished writing it, I place my pen down and look up at him.
He's reading over what I've just written, and without warning, he picks up my pen and corrects my spelling for me.
As he's doing it, his hand brushes against mine, and I swear I feel fireworks.
I know that sounds proper cliché, but I'm telling you, I felt actual fireworks.
I look up at him again to see if he noticed my breathing get louder for a split second, but I don't think he did.
He's too busy concentrating on my work.
"Can you find the next few for me?" He asks and I nod in return.
"I can try, but can you stay here in case I need your help?" I ask him.
"Of course I can, anything for you." He says quietly before smiling.
What does he mean 'anything for me'?
I brush that thought aside before carrying on with my work.
****************
It's the end of the day and I make my way to Mr Wilde's classroom to start studying.
He helped me a lot in class earlier, and I learnt a lot of things I didn't know, so I'm starting to think of this after school thing as a good thing.
I got on with all of Blake's friends at lunch, and actually exchanged numbers with them all, as they now think of me as 'one of the guys'.
Well they all told me that except Donté.
Donté seemed to treat me differently than the others did.
He also offered to tutor me for maths as I told him I was really bad at it.
I may just take him up on it as I do need help or I'll fail that as well.
"Good afternoon Ella." I hear a beautiful voice say.
I turn around and meet a pair of brown doe eyes.
"Oh hi sir, I was just going to your classroom." I say.
"Ah I'm afraid Mr Pembroke will be using that room today, so we can work in my office. Nobody can disturb us that way." He smiles and I nod.
"Lead the way." I tell him.
