My fingers froze in place, "Why? What happened?"
"No one can hurt you Em, as long as I'm around." Gabe said, he paused and closed his eyes.
"How did she die?" My voice cracked so I swallowed. Which was a mistake because it made my eyes pool with tears.
"Do you really want to hear this Em?" Gabe opened his eyes.
"Yes," I answered. My heart was pounding and I felt cold all over my body. My hands started to shake.
"I used elf magic," Gabe said. I wanted to ask more in detail but Gabe was never a man of details when it came to his job.
"Did she…” I paused and swallowed the lump in my throat, “...die in peace?"
"No," Gabe shook his head and momentarily closed his eyes.
