LOVE BEHIND THE GATES - Episode 1: The Girl Behind the Black Gate
Episode 1: The Girl Behind the Black Gate The first Monday of the new semester began with the usual chaos at Crown Heights University. Students rushed across the enormous campus, some carrying books against their chests, others complaining about early morning lectures. Cars moved slowly through the main gate while vendors shouted from the roadside, hoping to make their first sales of the day. But that morning, something unusual happened. The entire entrance seemed to pause. A convoy of three black SUVs slowly approached the university gate. The first vehicle stopped. Two men in dark suits stepped out. They looked around carefully before the second SUV moved forward. Whispers immediately began spreading among the students. "Who is that?" "Is it a politician?" "Maybe one of the governors' children." "Look at the cars!" The third SUV finally stopped. The rear door opened. A young woman stepped out. She was dressed simply but elegantly in a white blouse, black trousers and expensive-looking sneakers. Her long hair fell neatly over her shoulders, and she carried a small handbag. Her name was Amara Williams. And almost everyone on campus knew her name. She was the only daughter of Victor Williams, one of the country's most successful businessmen. Amara looked around the campus. For a moment, she smiled. This was supposed to be a new beginning. She had begged her father for months to allow her to attend Crown Heights University without living at home. She wanted independence. She wanted friends. She wanted to experience university life like everyone else. Unfortunately, her father had agreed to only half of her request. The security guards remained. "Miss Amara," one of them said, "your father instructed us to stay close." Amara sighed. "I know." "Please don't wander too far." She rolled her eyes. "I'm going to university, not a war zone." The guard smiled awkwardly. "Your father doesn't see it that way." Amara shook her head. "My father sees danger everywhere." She turned toward the campus. "At least let me breathe." --- THE SCHOLARSHIP BOY On the other side of the campus, David Okoro was running. Not because he was late for class. Because he was carrying two heavy boxes of books for the university library. "David!" He stopped. His roommate, Michael Johnson, was running toward him. "Where are you going with those?" "The library." Mike laughed. "You just resumed and you're already working for the university?" David adjusted the box in his arms. "I'm helping the librarian. She promised to give me some old textbooks." "You're too serious." "And you're too lazy." Mike laughed. "At least I know how to enjoy university." David smiled. "Some of us came here to graduate." Mike suddenly became serious. "Speaking of graduation, have you checked your scholarship status?" David nodded. "It's still active." "Good. You know you can't afford to lose it." David's smile disappeared. "I know." That was the truth. David couldn't afford to lose anything. His mother had sacrificed almost everything to get him into university. His father had died years earlier. Since then, David had promised himself that he would change his family's story. The scholarship was his only chance. He looked toward the main road. That was when he saw the black SUVs. Mike followed his gaze. "Ah." David frowned. "What?" "That's the famous Amara Williams." "Who?" Mike stared at him. "You don't know her?" "No." Mike laughed. "Brother, where have you been?" David shrugged. "Studying." "She's the daughter of Victor Williams." David looked at the convoy again. "Okay." Mike shook his head. "Only you can see three expensive SUVs and say 'okay.'" David laughed. "I don't care about rich people." Mike looked at him. "Be careful. That's exactly what poor people say before falling in love with rich girls." David laughed harder. "Never." Neither of them knew how wrong he was. --- THE LIBRARY Later that afternoon, Amara entered the university library. For the first time that day, she was alone. No security guard followed her inside. She smiled. "Finally." She walked between the shelves, looking for a particular textbook. She found the section and reached for a book on the upper shelf. Her fingers touched it. Then another hand grabbed it from the other side. Amara looked up. A young man was holding the book. David. They stared at each other. "You can let go," Amara said. David frowned. "I was here first." "I touched it first." "That's not how books work." She raised an eyebrow. "Excuse me?" David looked at her. "You want the book?" "Yes." "So do I." "Then give it to me." "Why?" "Because I'm asking nicely." David almost laughed. "You haven't asked nicely." Amara folded her arms. "Fine. Please give me the book." David handed it to her. "Thank you." She smiled. "See? Was that difficult?" David picked another book from the shelf. "Not at all." Amara turned away. Then she stopped. "You know, you could have been a little nicer." David looked at her. "You could have been a little less entitled." Her smile disappeared. "What did you just say?" David realized he had gone too far. But instead of apologizing immediately, he simply walked away. Amara watched him leave. "Unbelievable." --- THE ARGUMENT Ten minutes later, David was sitting at a table reading. Amara walked past him. Her bag accidentally hit the edge of the table. David's books fell to the floor. Amara stopped. "Oh." She bent down. "I'm sorry." David looked at her. "You again?" She frowned. "What does that mean?" "Nothing." "Good." She began picking up the books. David picked up the remaining ones. Their hands touched briefly. Both paused. Amara looked at him. David looked away. "Sorry," she whispered. "It's fine." She stood. "So..." "So?" "You still haven't told me your name." David looked at her. "David." "David what?" "Okoro." "I'm Amara." "I know." She smiled. "You know me?" "Everyone knows you." Something about the way he said it made her uncomfortable. "Because of my father?" David shook his head. "Because you're famous." Amara sighed. "That's exactly what I don't want." David looked at her. "What?" "People knowing me because of my father." For the first time, David saw something different in her eyes. She wasn't proud. She was tired. Before he could respond, her phone rang. "Dad." She answered. "Hello, Daddy." Her expression immediately changed. "Yes, I'm on campus." A pause. "No, I'm fine." Another pause. "I'm with—" She looked at David. "Nobody." David raised an eyebrow. Amara continued speaking. "Yes, Daddy." She ended the call. David smiled. "Strict father?" "You have no idea." "Then I should probably stay away." Amara smiled. "Maybe you should." --- THE PARTY That evening, students gathered around the campus recreation area. Music played from a portable speaker. Students laughed and danced. Amara sat with Nadia, her best friend. Nadia watched her carefully. "So..." "So what?" "Who is David?" Amara almost choked on her drink. "What?" "You've mentioned him three times." "I have not." "You just did." Amara laughed. "He's nobody." Nadia smiled. "Nobody?" "Just a student." "Interesting." Before Amara could respond, Daniel Cole appeared. He was dressed in an expensive designer shirt and surrounded by two friends. "Amara." She looked up. "Daniel." He smiled. "You're finally back." "I've been back for weeks." "I mean back properly." Amara nodded. "Okay." Daniel looked at Nadia. "Can I speak with her?" Nadia stood. "I'll be over there." She walked away. Daniel sat beside Amara. "I heard you've been spending time with someone." Amara's expression hardened. "Who told you?" "People talk." "People talk too much." Daniel smiled. "Is it true?" "Is what true?" "That you're seeing some scholarship student." Amara stared at him. "Who I spend time with is none of your business." Daniel's smile disappeared. "I'm only looking out for you." "I didn't ask you to." He stood. "Fine." He walked away. Amara watched him. Something about his reaction disturbed her. --- THE FIRST MESSAGE Later that night, Amara returned to her room. She removed her shoes and dropped her handbag on the bed. Her phone vibrated. A message. Unknown number. She opened it. STAY AWAY FROM DAVID. She stared at the screen. Then laughed nervously. "What?" Another message arrived. THIS IS YOUR FIRST WARNING. Her smile disappeared. She looked around the room. Her heart began beating faster. She called Nadia. "Nadia?" "Yes?" "Did you give anyone my number?" "No. Why?" Amara hesitated. "Someone just sent me a strange message." "What message?" Amara read it to her. There was silence. Then Nadia asked: "Who is David?" Amara looked at the phone. "I don't know." Another message arrived. This time, there was a photograph. Amara opened it. Her blood ran cold. It was a picture of her and David in the library earlier that day. Someone had photographed them without their knowledge. Underneath the photograph were four words: HE WILL GET YOU KILLED. Amara dropped the phone. --- THE SHADOW Across campus, David was walking back to his hostel. He suddenly stopped. Someone was standing beneath a tree. A dark figure. David looked carefully. The figure disappeared. He frowned. "Who was that?" He continued walking. His phone vibrated. He checked it. Unknown number. There was no message. Just a missed call. He called back. The number was unavailable. David put the phone away. He didn't know it yet, but from that moment onward, his life would never be the same. --- THE NEXT MORNING Amara woke up early. She barely slept. She wanted to tell her father. But she knew exactly what would happen. He would send security to the university. He would investigate David. He might even force her to leave. She couldn't let that happen. She decided to keep the messages secret. At breakfast, Nadia noticed her silence. "Are you okay?" Amara nodded. "Yes." Nadia didn't believe her. Before she could ask again, Amara's phone vibrated. Another message. She slowly opened it. This time, there was no photograph. Only one sentence: YOU WERE WARNED. NOW WATCH WHAT HAPPENS TO THE BOY. Amara's hands began shaking. At that exact moment, across the campus, David was walking toward his first lecture. He never saw the motorcycle approaching behind him. The rider accelerated. David turned. His eyes widened. The motorcycle was coming straight toward him. TO BE CONTINUED...
