"It has been two long days since Sadie found out about Tabitha. Why can't you just forgive me?" Dylan asked Eliza, his mother.
Eliza slowly shook her head, "The fated mate pull is strong. That doesn't mean that you should have just turned your back on Tabitha. I know you have told me several times that it wasn't like that but let me tell you again about your father and me. Zach and I felt the fated mate pull, but the created mate pull was almost as strong. We couldn't leave our first marriages without a lot of conflicts. Even though we both knew about the other's mate and even agreed that we need to follow our fated mate pulls. Our mates even agreed with us and told us that it wasn't fair to hold on to them. They felt pulls to others as well, but we had promised Cassandra that we would stay with who she created us to be mated to. It was hard. Then after they both died, it was still many, many years before your father and I finally gave in to the fated mate pull. We grieved for our mates and held our children tight. However, in the end, we mated and have loved each other ever since."
Dylan shook his head, "I know, Mom. I tried to keep Taina from leaving. I wanted to explain everything to Sadie right then. Taina told me it was best just to let her go. I think the difference was there was never a physical relationship between us. I felt obligated to stay with her out of principle and not out of love."
"Yes, I always knew that you didn't love me for more than a friend. I guess I should have stuck around long enough to make sure you told your fated girl what was up," her voice surprised Dylan.
He turned around to see Tabitha standing in the doorway, looking as beautiful as the last time he saw her. Tabitha's long blonde hair was french braided and wrapped into a bun; her blue-green eyes were sparkling with her white teeth shining as she smiled.
"Where have you been? No one has seen or heard from you since the day that you left me standing there with Sadie," Dylan asked in shock.
Tabitha shrugged, "I traveled around the world for a while. I was searching for my fated mate. I haven't found him, but I had a lot of fun looking. I got into a few fights and killed a couple of goons. No big deal, you know me."
Dylan laughed, "You never wanted to leave the castle. You didn't want to take the chance of finding your fated mate because 'what if he's mean to me?'" Dylan said, making air quotes. "The only reason you even agreed to go help out the Snowy Range pack is that we had been keeping tabs on Cordelia for a very long time. It was time for her to pay for everything that she had dealt with so many of our kind."
"I guess it didn't matter anyway. I got dumped, and you got the princess of all the elementals. I am just doomed to be alone because of my powers," Tabitha took a breath, letting it out slowly.
Sadie poked her head in the office where they were gathered, "If you would have waited and told me about you and Dylan. I would have walked away. I wouldn't have held him to the fated mate bond. Your powers are something to be proud of, not the reason you are alone."
Tabitha chuckled, "What do you know, Sadie? You were locked away in a cave for over eighteen years."
"You are holding that against me?" Sadie snorted, "I learned more in that cave than most of the people outside of it did. Dustin wasn't mean to me, and he made sure I knew the history of all the elementals. He had me study maps of the world. I didn't feel I was locked away because of who I was, but I was locked away to protect myself from the outside world. He taught me so much. Then he brought Beth to help me learn about being a proper person, a proper lady. I guess you could say." Sadie paused and looked at Tabitha, "What do you honestly have against other than Dylan?"
"My powers tell me that you bring trouble where ever you go. You are the reason for things that you don't even know about," Tabitha raised her eyebrow and smirked. "I could tell you so much about yourself, but I will wait until your sister and her husband are present."
Dylan spoke up, "Taina, that is not funny. Do not be joking about my wife like that."
"Who said I am joking?" Tabitha said as she turned to go. "Oh, Eliza, where is my room now that you have moved your grandchild and the royal twins into mine."
Eliza rolled her eyes, "I have moved your things to the room next to the library, where you lived before."
Tabitha laughed, "Once a bookworm, always a bookworm. Or, in her case, a cave bat." Tabitha walked out of the room, laughing as she went.
"What is she talking about? Yes, I was raised in a cave, but I am no bat," Sadie frowned.
Dylan shook his head, "Taina is always making jokes about what she can read from people. That is part of her power. That's why she didn't stick around in the first place. Now she wants you to think that your past can be used against you."
Sadie sighed, "What if she isn't joking, though. What if I am the reason that our family is in danger? What if the silence is following me and not Skylar, James, and the twins?"
"Honey, don't think that way. Taina is just trying to scare you. That is just how she is. She talks in riddles and never really says what she means until she wants to prove her point. Please don't take her seriously," Dylan said as he pulled Sadie into a hug.
Sadie leaned on her husband as if he were her lifeline. Taking a deep breath, she said, "I am sorry for being so cold to you the other day. We need to get everything back on track."
"I wasn't mad at you. I love you and know that you were just confused and frustrated about what had happened," Dylan said, and he leaned in to kiss Sadie passionately.
