Skylar awoke with a start; she had sweat pouring down her face. She was confused about where she was, nothing looked familiar, and her head was pounding as if she had been running for hours.
"Hello?" Skylar called out.
An echo of her voice answered back.
She felt utterly blind due to the darkness because a wolf, even in her human form she should have been able to see something. In every direction she looked, there was nothing but darkness. As she began to panic, a voice called to her, "Skylar, calm down. Look slowly as you turn."
"Who's there?" she called out.
The voice was neither male nor female. It wasn't a voice that she knew. She could figure out what she was supposed to see as she turned slower and slower. Then all of a sudden, she spotted a blinking glow off in the distance. Skylar started following it slowly, and then she began to run. The faster she ran, the further away it got.
"Stop chasing it. Call it to you," the voice responded.
"How?" Skylar asked.
There was no response.
Skylar stopped and took a deep breath. She mentally moved the blinking glow toward her, and as she did, she felt a warm glow surround her.
"You are nowhere, but you are everywhere. You heal from within this darkness. You become tired and weak from pulling the darkness within yourself. You must learn to pull the light from the darkness instead. This will help you heal others without harming yourself," the voice stated in a no-nonsense way.
Then Skylar sat straight up on the bed and was pouring with sweat.
"Are you okay?" James asks her slowly.
Skylar could only nod her head.
Meanwhile, Sadie was having a dream of her own.
Sadie was sitting in a meadow surrounded by every beautiful wildflower she could ever imagine. She was watching them gradually die because the rain couldn't reach them. The bees were on the outside of a glass bubble looking in with no way to the food. They were starting to die as well. The rain poured all around the outside of the bubble but not a drop could enter.
"Stop!" Sadie screamed into the bubble, but only an echo answered her.
"Breath in, breath out, breath in, breath out," Sadie told herself.
"Good. You learned the first step to honing your power. First, you must relax," a strange voice said.
Sadie smiled, "What is the next step?"
There was no answer.
Sadie thought, "I want the rain and the bees in my bubble, but I want to keep out the darkness. How do I make this happen?"
Slowly, Sadie reached out her hands and called the bees to her. They slowly entered the bubble and began to feed on the flowers.
Next, she reached her hands above her and thought about how the rain would fall on her face. Slowly, the rain began to sprinkle her.
"Good. You have figured out how to pull things in. Now, you need to focus on pushing things out that you don't want in," the voice stated.
A demon and blood-thirsty hellhounds entered her bubble. Sadie's first thought was to fight them.
However, everything she tried, they would reappear from their entrance point. They couldn't harm her here.
She needed to figure out how to push them out.
Sadie closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She imagined her bubble getting smaller and tighter around her until the demon and hellhounds were outside the bubble. She opened her eyes and pushed her bubble out around everything she wished to protect. The demon and the hellhound were pushed back against the moving wall.
"Congratulations! You have succeeded," the voice stated.
Sadie sat up in bed, covered in sweat and with a smile on her face.
Dylan rubbed his sleepy eyes, "What's going on?"
"I finally understand," Sadie giggled.Sadie jumped out of bed and ran to the door, but before she could open it, it flew open.
Skylar stepped in, breathing heavily, "I had a strange dream. I need to talk to you about it."
Sadie just laughed, "I had a strange dream, too. It was about how I can control my power."
"Mine was about controlling my power, too," Skylar tilted her head to the side. "Do you know the voice?"
Sadie shook her head, "No, it was an odd voice. I couldn't tell if it was a man or a woman. I don't understand where it came from."
Dylan groaned, "It is the middle of the night. What are you two talking about?"
Skylar looked sheepishly at Dylan, "Sorry." She turned to leave, but Sadie followed her out the door.
Sadie giggled as she pulled the door closed behind her, "I am so happy that we have each other. Our powers are so different, but we both had a dream about them. Let's go down to the conference room and talk about our dreams, and I'll get us some hot tea."
Skylar nodded as she headed for the stairs. The only bad thing about the old Counsel Castle was that there were guards everywhere. There were always people trying to break in and kill the remaining original elementals.
As Skylar reached the conference room, she noticed the light was on. Skylar mind-linked Sadie, "Why would someone be in here? They gave us this conference room to use for our trip research. Forget the tea for now and come back to me."
Sadie shook her head and shrugged as she opened the door.
Taina sat with a smirk on her face as she was reading through the Lupinomicon.
"What do you think you are doing?" Skylar and Sadie yelled at the same time.
"I was just reading about my history and my family," Taina said with a roll of her eyes.
Skylar slowly sat down across from her, "You could have asked. That book is sacred, and we are meant to protect it. I feel that you have no respect for our role in the kingdom."
Taina forced a laugh, "You think you are so special because you are the 'forbidden child.' You honestly have no idea." Taina stood to leave but then decided to sit down again, "So what are the two of you doing up at this hour?"
"That's none of your business," Sadie spat out.
Taina laughed, "You know that I already know anyway, right?" She looked from one sister to the other, "You think you have this whole power thing figured out because of some stupid dream, but that's just the beginning. I hope that 'no one' gets hurt while you are learning to control them." Taina walked out of the room and slammed the door behind her, and they could hear her laughs echo down the halls as she exited the castle.
"I wish I knew what she was really up to," Skylar said, shaking from Taina's words.
Sadie looked at the book, "The book will reveal at least what she was reading, won't it?"
Skylar nodded, "I think so."
Sadie put her hands on the book cover and thought about Taina and what she could have been looking at, and the book opened to the lost goddess, Taina.
