THE CRIMSON VOW
THE CRIMSON VOW Chapter One: The Devil's Bride The city of Noctara never slept. Beneath towers carved from black crystal and silver stone, shadows moved like living creatures. Deals worth kingdoms were made in secret. Blood bought loyalty. Fear built empires. And no empire stood greater than the Moretti Syndicate. At twenty-nine years old, Dante Moretti ruled the most powerful mafia family in the realm. People called him many things. The King of Shadows. The Black Wolf. The Devil of Noctara. None dared call him by his first name. Dante sat alone in the highest chamber of Ravenkeep Tower, staring through the floor-to-ceiling windows at the city beneath him. Rain hammered against the glass. Lightning illuminated the skyline. His expression remained cold. Unmoved. A knock echoed through the room. "Enter." The door opened. His adviser, Victor Salazar, stepped inside. "We have a problem." Dante slowly turned. "Another one?" Victor's face was grim. "The Council has made their decision." Silence filled the room. Dante already knew he wouldn't like what came next. The High Council of the Seven Kingdoms rarely acted without hidden motives. "They've chosen a bride for you." The air instantly grew colder. Dante laughed once. A humorless sound. "They've done what?" Victor swallowed. "It's official." He placed a sealed document on the desk. "The marriage contract has already been approved." For the first time that evening, anger flashed in Dante's silver eyes. The room trembled. Dark energy rippled through the walls. Candles exploded. Glass cracked. Victor remained still. He had served Dante for years. He knew better than to react. Dante wasn't merely a mafia king. He was something far more dangerous. A Shadowborn. One of the rarest magical bloodlines in existence. Creatures of darkness obeyed him. Night itself bent to his will. Most kingdoms feared him. The Council feared him even more. Which was exactly why they wanted him married. A controlled king was easier to manipulate. Dante picked up the contract. His eyes scanned the page. Then his jaw tightened. "No." Victor remained silent. Dante read the name again. As if hoping he had misunderstood. But the letters remained unchanged. Lady Seraphina Ashbourne. The daughter of his greatest enemy. The woman who despised him more than anyone alive. The woman he hated just as much. "Impossible." Victor sighed. "The Council believes an alliance between your families will prevent war." Dante crushed the paper in his fist. "Then the Council is foolish." The Ashbourne family controlled the eastern territories. Ancient nobles. Powerful mages. Political monsters. For generations, the Morettis and Ashbournes had been enemies. Their hatred was legendary. And Seraphina Ashbourne... She was the worst of them. Beautiful. Arrogant. Dangerous. The last time they met, she had nearly stabbed him. Twice. A memory surfaced. A royal masquerade. Music. Champagne. A silver dagger pressed against his throat. And Seraphina smiling sweetly while threatening murder. Dante almost smiled at the recollection. Almost. Then another knock interrupted his thoughts. This one urgent. Victor opened the door. A guard rushed inside. "My lord." "What is it?" The guard bowed. "Lady Seraphina has arrived." Silence. Victor blinked. Dante slowly rose from his chair. "She's here?" "Yes." "Why?" The guard hesitated. "She says she would rather discuss the contract face-to-face than send a messenger." A dangerous decision. A reckless one. The Ashbourne estate stood hundreds of miles away. Traveling alone into enemy territory was madness. Unless... Dante's eyes narrowed. Unless she intended to cause trouble. That sounded exactly like Seraphina. A slow smile appeared on his face. For the first time all day. "Bring her in." The guard hurried away. Several moments later, the chamber doors opened again. And Seraphina Ashbourne entered. Everything seemed to stop. Even the storm outside appeared quieter. She wore a fitted black dress embroidered with silver runes. Long dark hair flowed over her shoulders. Emerald eyes glowed beneath the chandelier light. Elegant. Deadly. Beautiful enough to start wars. And judging by her expression, she might start one tonight. Her gaze met Dante's. Instant hostility. Good. Some things never changed. "Moretti." "Ashbourne." Neither moved. Neither smiled. Victor glanced between them. The tension was so thick it felt physical. Finally, Seraphina stepped forward. "I assume you've read the contract." "I have." "And?" Dante leaned against the desk. "I'd rather marry a dragon." She folded her arms. "Interesting." His eyes darkened. "Why?" "Because dragons are honest." Victor quietly considered leaving. Immediately. Seraphina laughed. The sound was sharp. Dangerous. "I feel the same way." For several seconds they simply stared at each other. Two predators assessing a threat. Two enemies forced into impossible circumstances. Then Seraphina reached into her bag. She withdrew a second document. And tossed it onto the desk. Dante glanced down. "What is this?" "My proposal." He opened it. His eyebrows rose. A revised contract. Far more detailed. Far more ruthless. "No affection." "No interference in personal affairs." "No sharing of private finances." "Separate living quarters." "Mutual respect." Dante looked up. "A business arrangement." "Exactly." Her voice remained cool. "We marry." "We satisfy the Council." "We prevent war." "Then we live our own lives." The proposal made sense. Logical. Efficient. Cold. Everything Dante preferred. Yet something bothered him. Something he couldn't explain. Maybe it was the way her eyes challenged him. Maybe it was the fact she had crossed half the continent just to confront him directly. Or maybe it was because despite years of rivalry... She was the only person who had never feared him. Not once. Most people saw a monster. Seraphina saw a man she wanted to punch. Repeatedly. A strange warmth touched his chest. Annoying. Unexpected. Dangerous. Dante closed the contract. "I'll consider it." Her eyes narrowed. "Consider?" "Yes." "I don't remember giving you a choice." The corner of his mouth lifted. "There it is." "What?" "The threat." She stepped closer. "You haven't changed." "Neither have you." Lightning flashed outside. For a brief moment their faces were illuminated. Silver eyes meeting emerald. Darkness meeting fire. Enemy meeting enemy. Neither noticed Victor quietly backing toward the door. He valued his life. And this conversation looked increasingly fatal. Dante extended his hand. "One year." Seraphina stared at it. "What?" "The contract." "One year." "If we survive each other, we renegotiate." She hesitated. Then slowly accepted his hand. The instant their skin touched, a pulse of magic exploded through the room. The floor shook. The windows rattled. Silver and crimson light erupted around them. Both immediately stepped back. "What was that?" Seraphina looked shocked. Dante was equally disturbed. Shadowborn magic never reacted to anyone. Never. Yet it had responded to her. A terrible realization formed in his mind. Ancient. Impossible. Forbidden. He met her gaze. And saw the same fear reflected there. Neither spoke the words. Neither wanted to. Because if the legends were true... This marriage wasn't merely a contract. It was fate. And fate had just declared war on both of them. Far above Noctara, thunder roared across the night sky. The beginning had arrived. Neither of them knew it yet. But before this story ended, kingdoms would burn. Empires would fall. And the two enemies standing in that room would be forced to choose between power... Or love.
