Chapter 1
Jessa POV
There is a funeral today in Ironvale Moonrest Cemetery, the oldest burial ground in our territory.
I stand in the cold wind, dressed in black from head to toe. My name is Jessa Emberfall, daughter of the late Alpha Rowan Emberfall, Alpha of the Hale pack. But now it feels like nothing more than a memory.
My father had died from a heart attack.
Wolves from every clan gather around my father’s grave, each one lowering their head as they approach me one after another to sympathize.
A gray-haired elder murmurs, “My sympathies, Luna Jessa.”
I wipe tears off my cheeks and bow my head. “Thank you.”
Even so, people still treat me with caution and respect. I know why.
It is not because of who I am. It is because of who I married.
My husband is Alpha Eryx Blackthorn, the ruler of Blackthorn Dominion, a territory so strong that other packs tremble at the thought of angering him. He rose to power faster than any Alpha in history, carving his place through blood and strategy.
But Eryx didn’t come to the funeral. The last time I saw my husband was 1 year ago.
Four years ago, when I married the man I believed was my greatest blessing, I never imagined our life together would end like this. The man who once held me close and treated me as if I were the center of his world now treats me like a stranger.
I’d poured everything my father had into helping him rise, investing our strength and resources to build his pack, Blackthorn Pack. But once he had everything he wanted, he stripped my father’s pack of all it had left and shut me out as if none of it ever mattered. Which led to my father’s death.
The ceremony lasts until noon. As the final chant fades, a dark car rolls up, sleek and expensive. I recognize the car. It belongs to my husband, Eryx.
The driver steps out and opens the door for Eryx.
He climbs out slowly, dressed in a perfectly pressed black suit that shapes his broad shoulders perfectly like the alpha he was. His shoe shines of luxury. His aura rolls out cold as usual.
Now, I see him again… at my father’s funeral. The audacity of him. His appearance only flashed back memories I’d tried to bury, on that day my father had a heart attack, the Hale pack had no money or any resources to afford his treatment. I had knelt in front of Eryx, begging him to help save my father’s life with tears in my eyes but he’d looked me straight in the eyes and refused, that seeing my father die was his greatest wish. Only then did I realise the man I loved and did everything for saw me as an enemy and wanted revenge.
Now my father is dead, he finally came. And worse… he brought her. Mara Redclaw with him.
A woman in a short red dress steps out behind him, clinging to his arm. She’s wearing red. Here, wearing red to a funeral is a disrespect to the death. Among wolves, red means arrogance.
She tilts her head sweetly. “Eryx… do I have to join you?”
He softens when he looks at her. Then he removes her hand gently.
“Wait for me in the car,” he says.
She smiles and, on her toes, presses a kiss to his cheek.
The sight breaks me.
Every mourner sees it.
My father’s grave is right there, watching.
And my husband lets another woman kiss him in front of all our clans.
I clench my fists hard but I force myself to stay calm, but my wolf snarls inside me.
Eryx walks toward me with slow, controlled steps. When he meets my eyes, he stands in front of me. At six feet of pure power, he casts a long shadow over my trembling figure.
His voice is smooth but cruel. “I heard the news.”
I swallow. “What do you want?”
His gaze grows colder, cutting straight through me. “Isn’t it obvious? I’m here to honor my dear father-in-law.”
“How dare you show up here,” I spat, my voice filling with anger. “You’re the one who tried to destroy his life!”
Eryx’s eyes darkened. “Why would I save the man who killed my parents?”
Again. He’s bringing up that lie again. He still believes my father is responsible for their death. And marrying me… it was just part of his revenge. But it’s not true! My father could never have done something like that. I know my father is innocent.
I’ve been searching for the truth all this time, chasing every lead, every whisper, every clue to prove his innocence but I can’t seem to find anything. Not a single clue.
I used to pray every day, hoping my father would get better, that somehow I could hear it from him, what really happened. But now… the father I loved and the truth I longed for are gone. Gone forever and I fear I’ll never know the truth.
He takes a step closer and stands in front of me as he signals one of his men. The man came, holding what looked like a file.
He took out a paper from the file and without a word, he threw it at me, the paper shattering right in front of me and dropping to my feet.
“Here’s the divorce papers. Sign them. Finally getting rid of you.” His cold gaze is fixed on me as his lips curved into a short smile that didn’t reach his eyes.
I stare at him, unable to speak, only those silent tears rolled down my eyes.
Every hope, every memory of what I thought we had, shattered right in an instant.
