Continuation of Chapter 6

449 Words
Amelia stood frozen, her mind reeling with the revelation. Lex was married? Why hadn't he told her? She felt a wave of anger, followed by a wave of embarrassment. Had she been so blinded by Lex's charm that she hadn't seen the signs? As she stood there, her phone buzzed with a message from Lex. "Hey, Amelia, what's up? Want to grab lunch today?" Amelia's eyes narrowed. Was he kidding? Did he really think she was just going to ignore the fact that he was married? She typed out a furious response, her fingers flying across the screen. "You're married? Why didn't you tell me?" The response came back immediately. "I can explain. Meet me at the cafe on the corner of Main and Elm. Please, Amelia." Amelia's heart was racing. She didn't know what to do. Part of her wanted to confront Lex, to demand answers. But another part of her was scared, scared of what she might find out. As she stood there, Victoria's words echoed in her mind. "I'm sure we'll be seeing a lot more of each other." What did she mean by that? Amelia's curiosity got the better of her. She decided to meet Lex, to hear him out. But she was going to be careful, careful not to let her emotions get the better of her. She arrived at the cafe, her eyes scanning the crowd. Lex was already there, sitting at a table in the corner, his eyes fixed on her. As she approached, he stood up, his expression tense. "Amelia, I'm so sorry. I was going to tell you, I swear." Amelia's eyes narrowed. "Why didn't you? Why did I have to find out from your wife?" Lex's eyes dropped, his expression guilty. "I know I should have told you. But I was scared, scared of losing you." Amelia's heart skipped a beat. What was he saying? Did he care about her? But as she looked into his eyes, she saw something there, something that made her heart skip a beat. A glimmer of desperation, of fear. And then, just as she was about to respond, everything went black. Amelia felt a sudden jolt, like she was being pulled under water. She tried to scream, but her voice was trapped in her throat. When she came to, she was lying on the floor, her head pounding. Lex was kneeling beside her, his eyes wild with worry. "Amelia, are you okay? What happened?" Amelia's mind was a blur. She didn't know what had happened, didn't know what was going on. But as she looked into Lex's eyes, she saw something there, something that made her blood run cold. A glimmer of relief.
