A year ago, Seraphina Nightwind’s world shattered when Kael Ironfang rejected her before both their packs, destroying her pride and the fragile peace their union was meant to secure. The humiliation hardened her heart, turning her pain into a quiet, burning desire for revenge.

Now, the moment she has waited for finally arrives. Kael walks straight into the trap she has carefully crafted, unaware that the woman he once rejected has become his greatest threat. Yet as the plan unfolds, Seraphina faces an unexpected enemy, her own conflicted heart. Revenge should taste sweet, but doubt gnaws at her with every step she takes.

Kael carries his own torment, burdened by a rejection he insists was never truly his choice. Shadows from the past linger around him, hinting at a darker truth neither of them fully understands. When Seraphina’s secrets begin to unravel and Kael edges closer to discovering what she has done, the danger between them shifts from emotional to deadly.

What begins as vengeance soon spirals into a tangled web of deception, betrayal, and long-buried truths. And as destiny forces them back into each other’s lives, Seraphina and Kael must confront a reality far more powerful than hate: that their bond, broken, bruised, but still burning, may be the only thing strong enough to save them.

Their war was meant to destroy, but the truth might bind them tighter than fate ever intended.

Ceremony of the Blood Moon
The first thing Kael Ironfang saw was the blood. It floated in the air between the trees. Not dripping. Not falling. Floating. A thin red line hung beneath the moonlight, twisting like a living thread. Kael stopped. His hand went to the dagger at his waist. Behind him, the forest was silent. Even the night insects had stopped singing. His wolf stirred beneath his skin. Danger. Kael's eyes narrowed. “Come out.” Nothing moved. He took another step. The red thread pulsed. Once. Twice. Then a voice whispered from the darkness. “You should have stayed away from the moonstone.” Kael spun around. A figure stood between two ancient trees. Its face was hidden beneath a black hood. Kael's fingers tightened around his dagger. “Who are you?” "The Moon Court always remembers its wolves." "Should I?” "You really don't remember us, do you?" The figure tilted its head. “It doesn’t matter.” “It will when I cut your throat.” Kael replied. A low, humorless laugh echoed through the forest. Then another figure stepped out behind him. Kael turned sharply. His wolf snarled. Two. There were two of them. No. His senses stretched into the darkness. Three. His grip tightened around the dagger. “You're surrounded,” the first figure said. Kael's mouth curved into a cold smile. “Then you should have brought more.” The nearest figure lunged. Kael moved before the attack landed. He ducked beneath the curved blade and drove his elbow into the attacker's ribs. The figure stumbled, but Kael barely had time to recover before another blade slashed toward his throat. He twisted. Steel cut across his shoulder. Pain burned. Kael stepped back, his hand immediately pressing against the wound. Blood soaked through his shirt. The figures did not speak. They simply watched him. That unsettled him more than the attack. Most enemies wanted something from a fight. Victory. Power. Revenge. These people wanted only one thing. To make sure he was here. The red thread above them pulsed again. Kael's eyes lifted. “What the hell is that?” The hooded figure smiled. “You don't recognize your own blood?” Kael froze. His wolf suddenly slammed against his mind. Mate. The word came with such force that Kael staggered. His breath caught. “No.” The figure's smile widened. “Tonight, the bond will be broken.” "She'll hate you.” "She'll never forgive you.” The other figure added. "And you'll deserve every second of it.” Another said. A strange pressure suddenly crushed Kael's chest. He dropped to one knee. His vision blurred. Something cold crawled through his veins. The red thread above him snapped downward. Straight toward his heart. Kael roared. His eyes flashed blue. The air exploded around him. The three figures were thrown backward. Kael rose slowly, breathing hard. The wound on his shoulder burned. His wolf was no longer snarling. It was howling. Something is wrong. Kael stared at the red thread. “What bond?” No one answered. Instead, the hooded figure reached into his cloak and pulled out a small black stone. The moment Kael saw it, pain tore through his skull. A woman's face flashed in his mind. Long black hair. Silver strands. Amber eyes. Seraphina. Kael grabbed his head. “No!” The image vanished. The hooded figure lowered the stone. And suddenly, the pain stopped. Kael's breathing became ragged. “What did you do?” The figure stepped closer. “You will stand before her.” Kael's blood ran cold. “You will look into her eyes.” The red thread twisted around his wrist. “And when the time comes…” The figure's voice dropped to a whisper. “You will destroy the bond with your own mouth.” Kael lunged. But before he could reach them, the forest erupted with silver light. He threw up his arm. The world disappeared. One night later. The moon rose over the ceremonial grounds. Full. Bright. Unforgiving. Seraphina Nightwind stood beneath it with blood beneath her fingernails. She had pressed them into her palms so hard that the skin had broken. “Stop doing that.” Her father's voice came from beside her. Seraphina glanced at Garrick Nightwind. He was staring straight ahead. As usual. Her mouth tightened. “Doing what?” “Trying to bleed yourself to death before the ceremony begins.” She looked down at her hands. A thin line of blood ran across her palm. She closed her fingers. “It helps me think.” Garrick finally looked at her. His stern expression softened for barely a second. “You're nervous.” “No.” “Seraphina.” She exhaled through her nose. “Fine. I'm nervous.” “Good.” Her brows pulled together. “Good?” “It means you're not a fool.” She stared at him. Garrick's mouth twitched. It was almost a smile. Almost. “You're about to stand before half the realm and bind yourself to the future Alpha of the Ironfang Pack,” he said. “Anyone who isn't nervous is either stupid or already dead.” Despite herself, Seraphina almost laughed. Then the sound of approaching footsteps reached them. Her amusement disappeared. The crowd began to whisper. Garrick looked past her. Seraphina didn't turn. She didn't need to. She knew who had arrived. Kael. Her heart gave one hard, traitorous beat. Then another. “Don't look at him,” Garrick said. Seraphina's eyes narrowed. “I wasn't planning to.” “Good.” “You're very irritating tonight.” “I'm your father. It's one of my duties.” That almost made her smile again. Then the whispers grew louder. “He's here.” “The Ironfang Alpha has arrived.” “Look at him…” Seraphina inhaled slowly. The ceremonial grounds were filled with wolves from both packs. Alphas sat beneath the carved stone arches. Betas stood behind their leaders. Warriors lined the outer edges of the grounds, their weapons gleaming beneath the moon. Tonight was supposed to be the beginning of peace. For generations, the Nightwind and Ironfang packs had been enemies. Blood had been spilled over territory. Over hunting grounds. Over old betrayals no one could even remember properly anymore. Tonight, that was supposed to end. One bond. One union. One future. Seraphina lifted her chin. She was not merely a bride. She was the next Alpha of the Nightwind Pack. She had earned that position. She had fought for it. And she would not allow anyone to see how badly her heart was beating. “Seraphina.” Garrick's voice dropped. She glanced at him. “Whatever happens tonight, remember who you are.” Her brows drew together. “What is that supposed to mean?” “Exactly what I said.” “That sounds ominous.” “It is.” Before she could ask more, the crowd parted. Kael Ironfang walked toward her. And the world became painfully quiet. He was exactly as she remembered. Tall. Broad-shouldered. Dark-haired. The kind of man who never needed to raise his voice to command attention. His dark hair just brushing his brow, casting shadows over intense blue eyes that contained far too much. Too much restraint. Too much silence. Too much… distance. For a moment, Seraphina forgot how to breathe. A year ago, those eyes had been the safest place in the world. Now she wasn't sure whether they were the place she wanted to run toward… Or the place she needed to run from. Kael stopped several feet away. His gaze moved over her. The black dress. The silver embroidery. The silver streaks in her hair. His eyes lingered for half a second too long. Seraphina noticed. Of course she noticed. She noticed everything about him. That was the problem. “Seraphina Nightwind,” he said. His voice was deep. Controlled. But not entirely steady. She lifted one eyebrow. “Kael Ironfang.” A few people nearby exchanged amused looks. Garrick's expression darkened. Kael's jaw tightened. “You look beautiful.” The words slipped out before he could stop them. Silence. Seraphina stared at him. Then she smiled. It was a beautiful smile. And completely empty. “That's unfortunate.” Kael blinked. “What?” “That you noticed.” Something flickered across his face. Pain. Or irritation. She couldn't tell. “Still sharp-tongued.” “Still observant.” A faint breath escaped him. Not quite a laugh. Not quite anything. For one dangerous second, the old familiarity between them returned. Then Seraphina remembered herself. She stepped back. The distance returned. Kael's eyes followed the movement. Before either of them could speak again, the Elders approached. Elder Thalia Moonweaver stood at the center of them. Her silver hair was braided down her back, and the crescent-shaped mark on her forehead glowed faintly beneath the moon. Her eyes moved from Seraphina to Kael. Then lingered on Kael. “Are you certain?” she asked quietly. Kael's expression changed. Seraphina noticed. “Certain of what?” she asked. Thalia's gaze shifted to her. “Nothing that concerns you, child.” Seraphina frowned. “I hate when people say that.” “So do I,” Kael muttered. Her eyes snapped toward him. He looked away. For the first time that night, something almost normal passed between them. Then a cold breeze swept across the ceremonial grounds. Kael stiffened. His hand moved toward his chest. Seraphina observed him. “Are you all right?” His eyes met hers. For a second, he looked terrified. Then the expression vanished. “I'm fine.” “You don't look fine.” “I said I'm fine.” The sharpness in his voice made her take a step back. His face changed immediately. “Seraphina—” “Don't.” His mouth closed. The Elders exchanged glances. Garrick stepped forward. “If there is a problem, this ceremony can be postponed.” “No.” Kael said it too quickly. Everyone looked at him. His fists clenched. “We proceed.” Seraphina studied him. Something was wrong. She had known Kael for years. He could be stubborn. Arrogant. Infuriating. But he had never looked like this. Like a man walking toward a cliff while someone held a knife against his back. The Elder raised the ceremonial blade. Its silver edge gleamed beneath the moon. “Tonight, beneath the gaze of the Moon Mother, the bloodlines of Nightwind and Ironfang stand before the realm.” The crowd fell silent. Seraphina and Kael stepped forward. Their hands were placed over the ceremonial bowl. A single silver blade rested between them. “Blood for blood,” the Elder continued. “Strength for strength.” “Pack for pack.” “Do you, Kael Ironfang, accept Seraphina Nightwind as your mate and future Luna, and will you bind your blood, your wolf, and your life to hers?” Kael stared at Seraphina. She smiled. He almost smiled back. For one second, his eyes softened. His lips parted. Seraphina's heart stopped. Say yes. The thought came before she could stop it. Then Kael's body jerked. His face twisted. His hand flew to his chest. A strangled sound escaped him. Seraphina stepped toward him. “Kael?” He looked at her. And she saw it. The terror. The pain. The silent scream in his eyes. Then something dark passed over his expression. His jaw locked. His gaze went cold. “I don't.” His own voice sounded foreign. As if someone else had spoken through him. His wolf roared inside his head. No! The words struck the ceremonial grounds like thunder. No one moved. Seraphina stared at him. For a second, she was certain she had misunderstood. “What?” Kael's breathing was heavy. His eyes were still fixed on hers. “I don't accept the bond.” The silence broke. Whispers erupted around them. “What did he say?” “He refused her?” “Before both packs?” Garrick turned toward Kael. His voice was dangerously quiet. “Choose your next words carefully, boy.” Kael didn't look at him. He only looked at Seraphina. And that was somehow worse. She searched his face. For an explanation. For regret. For anything. His eyes were filled with pain. But he said nothing. That was the moment something inside her broke. Not when he refused. Not when the crowd began whispering. Not even when her father stepped toward him. It broke because Kael looked like he was suffering… and still let her stand there alone. Seraphina laughed. The sound was small. Hollow. Kael flinched. She saw it. Good. At least something could still hurt him. “Very well,” she said. The Elder stared at her. “Seraphina—” She lifted one hand. “Don't.” The Elder fell silent. Seraphina looked at Kael. “Did you rehearse that?” His brows pulled together. “What?” “The rejection.” “Seraphina, I—” “No.” She smiled again. “You should let me finish. You've already had your moment.” His face tightened. “I didn't want to humiliate you.” A strange sound left her. “Really?” His eyes flashed. “Yes.” “Then what would you call this?” Kael had no answer. The silence between them became unbearable. Seraphina nodded slowly. “That's what I thought.” “Seraphina, listen to me.” She stepped closer. His body immediately tensed. “Listen to what?” His eyes flickered. “I can't explain.” Her smile disappeared. “Of course you can't.” “It's not what you think.” “Then tell me what it is.” Kael opened his mouth. Nothing came out. Seraphina stared at him. There it was. The final proof. Whatever excuse he had, he wasn't willing to give it to her. Her chest tightened. She swallowed the pain. Then she lifted her chin. “You’ve made your choice.” Her voice dropped. Quiet. Deadly. “And I will remember it.” For a split second— Just a split second— Kael’s expression cracked. Regret. Pain. Something raw and unguarded. But it was too late. Far too late. Because Seraphina had already turned away. And with each step she took, something inside her hardened. She thought she'd fall apart. Instead, she felt... empty. As if someone had quietly reached into her chest and stolen something she could never get back. The girl who had once believed in this union… In him… In anything beyond duty… Was gone. Buried beneath the weight of humiliation and betrayal. Replaced by something colder. Stronger. Unforgiving. The whispers followed her. Like ghosts. Like echoes of a moment that would never be forgotten. “She was rejected…” “In front of everyone…” “The Nightwind Alpha…” Her steps never faltered. Not once. Even as her heart bled. Even as her wolf howled in agony beneath her skin. Even as her entire world collapsed behind her. Because she would not give them the satisfaction. She would not let them see her break. But as she reached the edge of the ceremonial grounds— A voice cut through the chaos. Low. Desperate. “Seraphina—” She froze. Just for a second. Just long enough to feel it. That pull. That connection. That bond that had never even been formed… Yet somehow still existed. Her fingers trembled. Her breath hitched. And for a dangerous moment… It almost felt like she might turn back. Like she might give him a chance to explain. To fix this. To undo the damage. But then— The laughter. The whispers. The humiliation. Crashing back all at once. Her spine straightened. Her expression hardened. And without looking back— She walked away. Leaving Kael Ironfang standing alone beneath the moon. But what Seraphina didn’t see… What no one saw… Was the figure watching from the shadows. Hidden beyond the torchlight. Eyes glowing with dark satisfaction. Lips curling into a slow, wicked smile. And as the moonlight flickered across her face… The woman whispered softly— “Just as planned.” If Kael didn’t reject her by choice… then who truly destroyed the bond—and why?
