Chapter One
"Okay, guys! I think we did it." Chloe cheered her colleagues and subordinates on as they wrapped up their activities. "You did it as always, Chloe, you're amazing." Kelvin, her boss clapped her on the back. Chloe smiled, they have been losing sales and she has been looking for ways to bring in more customers to the restaurant, that was why she came up with a new recipe and thankfully it became successful. "Alright, from tomorrow, it'll be our best dish, I assure you." She replied to her boss. Kelvin smirked teasingly, "I trust you dear. You can go now, I know you can't wait to be in Joseph's arms." He teased, hugging himself close. Chloe rolled her eyes, Everyone in her workplace always found ways to tease her for her love for Joseph, her boyfriend of two years. They were so in love. "Oh please." She drawled, "Like you can't wait to be in Priyanka's arms?" She asked with a pointed look. Kelvin's lovely wife, Priyanka was a sight for sore eyes, her beauty was unmatched, probably the reason why Kelvin could never stay away for so long. Kelvin rolled his eyes in reply, "Fine fine. Let's clean up guys, it's been a long day." He ordered everyone and left the kitchen to clean up his office as well. Chloe hurried home, a smile spreading across her face. She was sure the recipe would make the restaurant she worked at the most popular in town. Her feet bounced on the pavement, her excitement bursting with each step she took. "I'm sure Joseph will be excited." She did a happy dance. The late spring sun cast long shadows on the street, and the birds were singing a cheerful song. As she turned the corner onto her street, she noticed someone standing on her doorstep. She quickened her pace, a sudden worry replacing her excitement. When she got close enough to make out the figure, "Joseph?" She called her boyfriend. The air seemed to leave her lungs, and she stopped in her tracks. Joseph stood motionless, a look of shock on his face. Chloe realized what was wrong too late--he was standing in a pool of blood, a kitchen knife laying nearby. Her heart sank. "Joseph!" She ran forward, holding her hands out like it would stop what happened from furthering. She screamed, and the howls of anguish echoing through her house filled her ears. She stumbled closer to Joseph, her hands trembling. She wanted to help, but it was too late. He was gone. "No no no no," she kept chanting, "Joseph! Please don't do this, Joseph!" She kept saying his name like it was prayers. The sound of her screams penetrated the thin walls of her house, and soon the neighbors were calling the police. Chloe stepped back, sinking to the ground. In a daze, she picked up the phone and dialed the police station. "9-1-1, what's your emergency?" The voice on the other side of the line said, Chloe sucked in her breath. She couldn't talk, she couldn't breathe. She stood still. She started to hyperventilate. "Hello? Are you okay?" The voice sounded again and Chloe endeavored to calm her breath. Once she caught her breath, she began to tell the dispatcher what had happened. Through her tears, she recounted the details of the scene--the pool of blood, the kitchen knife, and most heartbreaking of all--Joseph's lifeless body. "Ma'am, step back please." The officer spoke, moving closer to her, but she couldn't stop watching Joseph's lifeless body, wishing, praying, willing for him to stand up and scream "Just a prank babe, don't cry!" But no, he wouldn't do that. A lone tear escaped her eyes once more, then the waterworks began, it escalated into full on sob. One of the Police quickly neared her and pulled her away from the body into his arms. "It's okay." He chanted. 'is it really okay?' Chloe thought, squeezing the man she's hugging. When the police began to investigate. Chloe could only sit there, numb and in shock. The police determined that Joseph had been stabbed with the kitchen knife, and that there had been foul play. "Ma'am, we're looking at murder case here, do you know anything?" Another came with the question. Chloe looked at the man in disgust, "How can you ask me that?" She was upset and taking it out on the wrong person, but she didn't care. "Wow wow, ma'am, it's okay, he's new to the field," the one that hugged her earlier came to the newbie's rescue. "What he meant to ask is that, has there been any suspicious movement lately?" Detective Quinton asked. Her mood dropped even more as she searched her mind for an answer, "No, I don't think so." She replied, taking the cup of hot drink that was given to her by her neighbor. "It's fine." Detective Quinton mustered a small smile, before returning to the scene. Chloe sat in stunned silence, her mind a blur of pain and confusion. How could this have happened? What could have led someone to do such a thing? She had no answers, and no one seemed to be able to provide any. After the police left, they made sure to leave her in the custody of her neighbors, they seemed nice enough. "Will you be okay? I can stay with you all night." The nice woman asked, pulling Chloe into the guest room. She smiled, "It's okay Mrs. Robinson, I'll be fine." "Okay dear, I'm in the next room if you need anything." Mrs. Robinson patted her hand with a tight smile gracing her lips. "I'll be fine." Chloe repeated herself and plopped on the bed. She remained in that spot until sleep claimed her. She woke up in the middle of the night, sobbing from her sleep. So, she cried until daybreak. "Chloe dear?" Mrs. Robinson called out outside the guest bedroom, "Are you awake dear?" She asked. "Yes ma'am, I'll be right out." Chloe wiped her tears and walked into the bathroom to freshen up. Mrs Robinson's mouth hung open, seeing the state Chloe came down. She was all dressed up, face full of makeup, almost as if nothing happened the night before. "Chloe?" The woman called out tentatively. "I'll see you later Mrs Robinson, I'm off to work." She kissed the nice woman on her cheeks and ran out of the house, not waiting for a response. She already knew what it would be.
