Chapter 1: Cracks in the Glass
The kitchen was silent, save for the soft hum of the dishwasher and the occasional ticking of the antique wall clock Lana had inherited from her grandmother. A fragrant risotto, once steaming and vibrant, now sat cold and forgotten on the table, untouched. Lana adjusted the wine glass in front of her, the deep red liquid swirling gently as she tried to steady her thoughts. It was supposed to be a special night. Their third attempt at IVF had failed two weeks ago, and tonight was her way of reconnecting. She’d made his favorite meal, set the table with fresh flowers, even worn the navy blue dress James once said made her eyes look like sapphire. But he was late. Again. Lana glanced at the clock—9:47 PM. He was supposed to be home at seven. The front door creaked open, and James stepped inside, his suit jacket slung carelessly over one shoulder, his tie loosened as if the day had strangled him. “You’re late,” she said, rising from her seat. “I waited for you.” James blinked at the table, then at her. “I told you I had meetings.” “You said you’d be home by seven.” “They ran over. You know how it is,” he said, brushing past her and heading toward the liquor cabinet. Lana followed him. “I needed you today. We were supposed to talk—about the next steps.” “There’s nothing to talk about,” James said flatly, pouring himself a drink. “Maybe this is a sign.” “A sign?” Her voice cracked slightly. “That we stop trying?” He took a long sip, eyes darting anywhere but at her. “Lana, we’ve done everything. Doctors. Specialists. Medications. Maybe it’s time we accept that it’s not meant to be.” Her chest tightened. “You promised me. You said you wanted this just as much as I did.” James set his glass down with a thud. “Well maybe I changed my mind.” The words hit her like a slap. She stared at him, searching his face for something—remorse, guilt, sadness—but found only detachment. “How long?” she asked suddenly, her voice barely a whisper. James froze. “What are you talking about?” “You’re not just distant, James. You’re gone. You stopped touching me. You stopped talking to me. You’re always ‘working late.’” Her eyes narrowed. “How long has it been going on?” He didn’t answer right away. He didn’t deny it either. And that silence screamed louder than any confession. Lana stepped back, her hand trembling. “Oh my God. There is someone else.” James ran a hand down his face. “Lana, don’t do this—” “Who is she?” “It’s not what you think.” “It’s exactly what I think,” she said, her voice rising. “I gave you everything, James. My love. My trust. I stayed even when I felt like I was falling apart. And you—” Her breath hitched. “You were screwing someone else behind my back.” He looked at her then, and for the first time, she saw something that resembled shame. “It wasn’t supposed to happen,” he said. Lana laughed bitterly. “Of course not. That’s what they all say.” James looked down at his glass, avoiding her gaze. “It just… happened. I didn’t mean to hurt you.” “But you did.” They stood there for a long moment, the air thick with betrayal and broken dreams. The man she had married, the one she thought would fight for her, was gone. Replaced by a stranger who no longer saw her as enough. Finally, Lana walked toward the door. “I want you out.” James looked up, startled. “Lana—” “Out of this house. Out of my life. Out of whatever broken pieces of our marriage still exist.” He opened his mouth to argue, but the firmness in her voice left no room. With nothing else to say, James picked up his jacket and walked toward the door. Just before he stepped out, he turned to her. “I never wanted to hurt you.” “But you did,” she repeated, and this time, she didn’t cry. The door shut behind him. Lana stood in the middle of the kitchen, arms crossed over her chest as the silence swallowed her whole. Her eyes drifted to the table—two plates, untouched. Two glasses. One shattered marriage. She walked to the sink, poured out the wine, and dumped the cold food into the trash. Every motion was deliberate, like closing the final page of a chapter she didn’t want to be part of anymore. She glanced at her reflection in the kitchen window. Tired eyes. Smudged lipstick. Hair pulled too tightly, as if she was trying to hold herself together with strands and pins. But she wasn’t broken. Not completely. Not yet. Lana took a deep breath, one that filled her lungs with resolve. She didn’t know what tomorrow would bring, but she knew one thing for certain—she wouldn’t let James’s betrayal define her. Not now. Not ever.
