LOST CITY OF SHADOW PEAKBy TessyThe storm arrived without warning. One moment, the sea was calm. The next, waves as tall as buildings crashed against the wooden boat carrying twenty-year-old Zara Okafor toward the remote island of Nwanyi.Rain hammered the deck.Lightning split the sky.The fishermen operating the boat crossed themselves and whispered prayers.Zara held onto the railing and stared ahead.Somewhere beyond the storm was Shadow Peak, a mountain hidden deep within the island's jungle.According to an old map she had inherited from her grandfather, an ancient city lay hidden there.A city nobody had seen for over two hundred years. Most people believed it never existed.Zara believed otherwise. Her grandfather had spent his life searching for the city.He died before he could find it.Now she intended to finish what he started."Last chance to turn back!" one fisherman shouted over the wind.Zara shook her head."I've come too far."The old fisherman sighed."Then may God protect you."Three hours later, the storm passed. The boat finally reached the island. The fishermen unloaded her supplies and immediately prepared to leave."You aren't staying?" Zara asked. The oldest fisherman laughed nervously."Nobody stays after sunset.""Why?"The man's expression darkened."Because the mountain doesn't like visitors."Before she could ask more questions, the boat pulled away.Soon she stood alone on the shore.Ahead stretched miles of untouched jungle.Beyond it rose Shadow Peak.Dark.Silent.Watching.By afternoon, Zara had entered the jungle. The heat was unbearable.Sweat soaked her clothes.Strange animal cries echoed from unseen places. She followed the map carefully.Hours passed. The deeper she traveled, the stranger the jungle became.Massive trees blocked out the sunlight.Ancient stone carvings appeared along the path. Most were damaged.Others showed disturbing images.Human figures kneeling before creatures with glowing eyes. One carving caught her attention. It showed a city built on top of a mountain.Above it hovered a giant black shape with wings. She took a photograph.A sudden rustling sound interrupted her.She spun around.Nothing.The jungle appeared empty.Yet she felt certain someone—or something—was watching her.Night arrived faster than expected. She set up camp beside a stream. After eating, she sat beside a small fire and studied the map. That's when she heard footsteps.Crunch.Crunch.Crunch.Slow.Heavy.Approaching.Her heart began racing. She grabbed her flashlight."Who's there?"No answer. The footsteps stopped.Silence returned.Minutes passed. Then she noticed something terrifying.Large footprints surrounded her camp.Fresh footprints.Whatever had made them was enormous. At least twice the size of a human. And there were dozens.Circling her tent.Watching.Waiting.She didn't sleep that night. The next morning she continued deeper into the jungle.Around noon she reached a waterfall.Behind it, hidden by rushing water, she discovered a cave.Exactly where the map indicated.Excitement surged through her. This was it.The entrance to the lost city. She switched on her flashlight and stepped inside. The cave stretched downward for hundreds of meters.Ancient symbols covered the walls. Some glowed faintly blue. The deeper she went, the colder the air became.Soon she reached a giant underground chamber. And gasped. An entire stone bridge crossed a massive abyss. The bridge looked centuries old.Far below, darkness swallowed everything. The opposite side contained another tunnel. She carefully stepped onto the bridge.Halfway across, a cracking sound echoed beneath her feet. She froze.Another crack. Then another. The bridge was collapsing.Zara ran.Stones broke away behind her.The entire structure began crumbling. She sprinted toward the far side.A section suddenly collapsed beneath her.She jumped. For one terrifying moment she hung above the abyss. Then her hands grabbed the edge. She slammed into the stone floor.Breathing heavily.Alive.Behind her, the bridge disappeared into darkness. There was no way back. Now the only path was forward.Hours later she emerged from the tunnel. And stopped. The lost city stood before her.It was real.Massive towers rose from the mountain peak.Stone streets stretched into the distance.Golden statues gleamed beneath the sunlight.Nature had reclaimed much of the city, yet its beauty remained breathtaking.Zara could barely believe what she was seeing. Her grandfather had been right all along. She walked slowly through the ruins.Every building contained carvings and symbols. The city appeared abandoned.Yet something felt wrong. Not dead.Sleeping.As if the city was waiting for something.Or someone.Near the center stood an enormous temple.Unlike everything else, it remained pe

The devil's well
THE DEVIL'S WELL By Tessy Nobody in Umuaka village went near the Devil's Well. Children were warned about it from the moment they learned to walk. Hunters avoided it. Farmers avoided it. Even the village elders refused to speak about it after sunset. The well sat deep inside Ojukwu Forest, hidden beneath giant trees older than anyone could remember. According to legend, the well had no bottom. Anything thrown inside never made a sound. No splash. No impact. Nothing. People claimed it was not a well at all. It was a doorway. And whatever lived beneath it was always hungry. Twenty-one-year-old David Nnaji never believed such stories. He studied archaeology at university and considered himself a man of science. Ghost stories were simply stories. At least, that's what he believed until the day his younger sister disappeared. Her name was Amara. She was sixteen. She vanished without a trace. No signs of struggle. No footprints. No clues. The only thing found was her necklace lying beside the Devil's Well. The village immediately reached a conclusion. "The well has taken her." David was furious. "People don't get swallowed by magical wells," he argued. The villagers only shook their heads. Three days passed. No sign of Amara. Then David made a decision. If nobody else would search for her, he would. Even if it meant entering Ojukwu Forest alone. The morning he left, thick fog covered the village. His mother cried as she hugged him. "Don't go." "I have to." His father remained silent. Before David left, the old village chief handed him something wrapped in cloth. "A lantern?" David asked. The chief nodded. "Keep it lit." David almost laughed. "Why?" The old man looked directly into his eyes. "Because darkness notices when people enter its territory." The answer made no sense. Still, David accepted the lantern. Then he entered the forest. The deeper he traveled, the stranger the forest became. Birdsong gradually disappeared. The air felt unnaturally cold. By afternoon, he noticed something disturbing. Every tree seemed marked with the same symbol. Three circles connected by a vertical line. The symbol appeared carved into trunks everywhere. Hundreds of them. As if someone wanted travelers to know they were being watched. David photographed several carvings. Then he continued. Hours later he reached the well. It was larger than he expected. Much larger. Nearly twenty feet across. Ancient stones surrounded the opening. Strange symbols covered every surface. He peered over the edge. Darkness. Endless darkness. He picked up a rock and dropped it. One second. Five seconds. Ten seconds. Nothing. No sound. No impact. The rock simply vanished. A chill crawled up his spine. For the first time, doubt entered his mind. Maybe the stories weren't entirely false. Then he noticed something. Footprints. Fresh footprints. Leading toward the well. Amara's footprints. His heart pounded. He followed them carefully. They ended at the edge. And beside them was a rope. A rope disappearing into the darkness below. Someone had climbed down. Without hesitation, David secured the rope around a nearby tree. Then he began descending. The darkness swallowed him immediately. The deeper he climbed, the colder the air became. Twenty feet. Thirty feet. Fifty feet. Still no bottom. His lantern flickered. David looked upward. The opening now appeared as a tiny circle far above. A sudden whisper echoed from below. He froze. The voice sounded familiar. "D-David..." Amara. His sister. She was alive. "Amara!" he shouted. No response. Only silence. Then another whisper. "Help me..." The voice sounded weak. Terrified. David descended faster. The rope continued downward. And downward. And downward. Far deeper than any well should possibly be. Finally his boots touched solid ground. Relief flooded through him. He raised the lantern. And nearly screamed. He wasn't underground. He was standing inside an enormous cavern. A cavern so vast it looked like another world. Ancient buildings stretched into darkness. Stone roads wound between ruined structures. Massive statues towered overhead. An entire forgotten city existed beneath the earth. And every statue had the same face. A face twisted in agony. As if frozen during a final scream. Then David noticed movement. Someone stood in the distance. Watching him. A girl. His heart leaped. "Amara!" The figure slowly turned. It was his sister. But something was horribly wrong. Her eyes were completely black. And when she smiled, rows of sharp teeth filled her mouth. Far too many teeth. Far more than any human should possess. "Amara?" he whispered. The creature wearing her face smiled wider. Then dozens of identical black-eyed figures emerged from the ruins behind her. Every one of them looked exactly like his sister. And all of them began walking toward him. At the same time. Without blinking. Without speaking. Without making a single sound. David tightened his grip on the lantern. For the first time in his life, he understood true fear. And deep beneath the earth, something ancient had finally found a new visitor.
