Chapter 1: New Beginnings

Ava Parker’s heart raced as the car slowly made its way up the long, winding driveway. She stared out the window, taking in the grandeur of the villa that loomed ahead. It was much more magnificent than she had ever imagined. Her mother had told her about her soon-to-be husband’s wealth, but nothing could have prepared Ava for this. The mansion—no, villa—was breathtaking. The sprawling grounds, the ivy crawling up the stone walls, and the large windows that seemed to overlook endless gardens made her feel like she had stepped into another world.
"Look at this place, Ava," her mother, Claire, said, her voice filled with excitement. "Isn’t it beautiful?"
Ava nodded, though her smile felt strained. She was genuinely happy for her mother, who had found love after years of single parenthood, but she couldn’t shake the unease in the pit of her stomach. It wasn’t the house she feared—it was the people who lived inside it.
Her soon-to-be stepfather, Richard, had been a godsend to her mother after her difficult divorce. Claire had met Richard a little over a year ago, and Ava had witnessed her mother’s transformation from the exhausted, overworked single mom to a woman who had rediscovered joy and love. Richard was kind, successful, and patient, everything her mother deserved. Ava couldn’t argue with that.
But there was one person in this new life that she couldn’t quite accept: her soon-to-be stepbrother, Ethan.
Ava had hoped that moving in with Richard would mean a fresh start, a new chapter. But the thought of living under the same roof as Ethan made her feel anything but peaceful. Ethan had been the thorn in her side throughout high school and college. His teasing, his pranks, his ability to make her feel like she was never good enough—it had been a nightmare. What made it worse was that he had always been charming to everyone else. He was popular, handsome, and seemingly perfect to the world. No one knew about the torment he had put her through.
As the car finally came to a stop in the driveway, Ava forced a smile for her mother’s sake. She could already feel the weight of the upcoming days pressing down on her.
"Come on, let’s get you settled," Claire said, stepping out of the car with excitement in her eyes.
Ava hesitated for a moment before following her mother out of the vehicle, her eyes lingering on the grand villa one last time. There was a knot in her stomach, a mix of nerves and dread. Her phone buzzed in her pocket, and she pulled it out. A text from her best friend, Mia, flashed on the screen:
“How’s the new house? You sure you’re gonna survive this? Don’t forget to keep your guard up with Ethan!”
Ava chuckled softly, but the sound was hollow. Mia knew her too well.
Before she could respond, a voice interrupted her thoughts.
"Welcome!" Richard’s cheerful voice cut through the air as he stepped out onto the front porch. His smile was warm, and he waved enthusiastically. "Ava, Claire, I’m so glad you're here!"
Ava plastered on a smile and walked toward him, trying to push away the gnawing feeling in her gut. Richard was tall and broad-shouldered, his dark hair neatly combed back. He had a reassuring presence, and his deep voice had always been calming to her mother.
"Thanks for having us, Richard," Claire said, walking up to give him a hug. Ava stood awkwardly to the side, watching the embrace.
Ava forced another smile. "I’m sure it will be... great."
Just as she started to grab her suitcase from the back of the car, a soft voice spoke up.
“Let me help you with those, Miss,” an older man said kindly.
Ava looked up to see a man who appeared to be in his late sixties, dressed in a black suit and tie. He had graying hair, a gentle face, and an air of dignity about him.
“Oh, no, it’s okay. I can manage,” Ava said, instinctively stepping back to grab her things.
The butler, however, insisted. “It’s my job, Miss. Please, allow me.”
Ava hesitated for a moment before nodding, stepping aside so he could unload their suitcases with ease. His hands were steady, and he handled everything with the utmost care, as if he were accustomed to such tasks.
“Thank you,” Ava said, feeling oddly awed by the whole situation.
“My pleasure,” the butler replied with a respectful bow.
As the man unloaded the final bag, Richard gestured for Ava and Claire to follow him inside. "Come on, let me show you around."
Ava’s eyes widened as she stepped into the grand entryway of the villa. Marble floors gleamed beneath her feet, and the high ceilings made everything feel larger than life. The staircase to her left curved elegantly upward, and the entire space seemed to shimmer with opulence.
"This is incredible," Ava murmured under her breath, unable to hide her awe. She had never seen anything like it before.
Richard led them up a flight of stairs, stopping in front of a door at the end of the hallway. "This will be your room, Ava."
Ava stepped inside, her eyes immediately drawn to the large, queen-sized bed draped in luxurious linens. The room was decorated in soft pastels, with floor-to-ceiling windows that looked out onto the sprawling gardens. It felt both inviting and overwhelming.
"Wow," Ava breathed, still trying to process everything. "It’s beautiful."
“I’m glad you like it,” Richard said with a smile. “And right next door is Ethan’s room. He’s out right now, but you’ll meet him later."
Ava’s stomach clenched at the mention of Ethan. Of course, he had a room next door. They were practically neighbors now, sharing a wall, and she couldn’t escape the thought of him being right there. She hadn’t met him yet, and part of her was thankful for that. But the looming dread of having to face him again made her heart race.
Before she could say anything, Richard continued, "Your mom and I are going out for dinner tonight. If you need anything, you can ask the butler, or Ethan. He’s usually around."
Ava’s throat tightened at the mention of Ethan’s name. She didn’t think she could stomach spending any more time thinking about him, not after everything he had put her through.
"Alright," Ava said, forcing herself to sound more composed than she felt. “Thanks, Richard.”
Richard gave her one last smile before stepping out of the room to give her some space.
Ava sat down on the bed, her thoughts racing. This was it—she was living in a house filled with strangers, surrounded by wealth and luxury. But one person was not a stranger to her, and that person was Ethan.
She had no idea when their paths would cross, but she already knew that whatever happened, things would never be the same.
