The Clock
Chapter 1: The Clock The rain hammered against the stained-glass windows of Blackwood Manor, mirroring the turmoil in Elias Thorne's gut. The scent of lilies, heavy and cloying, hung in the air, a stark contrast to the musty odor of age that clung to the ancient house. His grandfather, Marcus Thorne, lay in state upstairs, a figure shrouded in mystery even in death. Elias ran a hand through his already disheveled hair. The solicitor, Mr. Finch, a man whose face seemed permanently etched with disapproval, had just finished reading the will. It was…sparse. A few paltry bequests to distant relatives, a generous donation to a local animal shelter (a surprise, considering Marcus's notorious dislike of cats), and then…this. "And to my grandchildren, Elias and Isabelle Thorne, I bequeath the contents of the antique clock located in my study," Mr. Finch had droned, his voice devoid of emotion. Elias exchanged a bewildered glance with his sister, Isabelle, who stood beside him, her arms crossed tightly across her chest. An antique clock? That was it? The legacy of Marcus Thorne, a man who had built a business empire from the ground up, boiled down to a dusty old timepiece? Isabelle, ever the pragmatist, had already voiced her skepticism. "A clock? Seriously? He couldn't have left us something…better?" Elias, however, felt a prickle of unease. He knew his grandfather. Marcus Thorne wasn't a man for sentimental gestures. There had to be more to it. Later, in the dimly lit study, the air thick with the scent of old books and pipe tobacco, Elias traced the ornate carvings on the grandfather clock. It was magnificent, a towering piece of craftsmanship, its pendulum swinging with a hypnotic rhythm. He ran his fingers over the cold, polished wood, searching for a hidden latch, a secret compartment—something that hinted at a deeper meaning. And then he found it. A tiny, almost invisible catch concealed beneath a cherubic carving. With a soft click, a hidden panel sprung open, revealing a small, velvet-lined box. Inside, nestled amongst faded velvet, was a tarnished silver locket and a single, folded piece of parchment. The locket was plain, bearing no inscription. But the parchment… that held a message written in a spidery script, a series of symbols and numbers that looked more like a cipher than a straightforward note. A chill ran down Elias's spine. This wasn't just an antique clock. This was a puzzle. And the answer, he suspected, held a legacy far more lethal than he could have ever imagined. The rain outside intensified, the wind howling like a mournful cry. The game, it seemed, had begun.
