Chapter I
The day has been running a little slow for me, as in, I had nothing to do. The office is running slow, co-workers are at their cubicles, the coffee stain on the main floor hasn't been cleaned for the last two days. Sometimes I have a feeling like no-one wants to work here anymore. Can't blame them. The summer heat has been getting to everyone here. The AC broke, hasn’t been working for the last two years, and I’ve been here longer with it working. Upper management really don’t care for us lowly workers.
New management has been breathing down our necks recently, especially for our department. Answering phones and helping with customers have been a hassle, and they want us to shorten our call time to pick up more calls. Sometimes, we even get the same caller, and we tell them the same thing. Script reading is starting to take a toll on my mind.
With summer in full swing, calls have almost been at a halt; save for the most loyal (idiotic/big companies) customers that seem to call in weekly about something with their computers/servers.
“When can we go home?” I asked out loud, not at anyone in particular.
“When the micromanager leaves. Another two minutes?” My cubicle neighbour spoke out.
With a loud sigh, I logged onto my computer to check on the reports, making sure that everything is done so I don’t have to come back in on the weekend.
A ping went off.
Two minutes before I can leave for the weekend. I groaned quietly and took a look at my email. Without a second guess, I almost flipped my computer at the sight of my boss sending me an email for reports to be done by the end of the day.
My cubicle neighbour looked over and whistled. “Seems like the new boss doesn't like you huh, Claire?”
I slammed my head against the desk, “It's the beginning of the month. He doesn’t like to miss his golf games with the higher ups. Always pushing their work onto me…”
“Seems like you’re not the only one this time.”
I sighed loudly, grumbling to myself. My co-workers started to leave one after another. Before starting, I grabbed my phone and sent a message to my husband, letting him know that I’d be back late and don’t wait for me tonight. I started on the reports.
It wasn’t long, maybe three hours after almost everyone had left the office, that I was finished with the reports. Leaning back to stretch, I forgot that my chair was missing a bolt to keep it from falling all the way, and my chair ended up falling. I heard a loud thud, but nothing stopped me from hitting the cubicle behind me.
I rubbed my head and looked up to see that the scenery had changed from the office to outside. Green everywhere. It didn’t click that I wasn’t home.
I didn’t know what was going on, or where I was, or how I ended up outside.
This is all new to me. With lush green trees around me, plants I haven’t seen before, and strange bird calls in the distance, I screamed in panic. Running in a random direction.
“What the hell is going on here! Where am I?!”
I pushed by branches of the underbrush, almost tripping over my own feet and overgrown roots. The smaller branches leave scratches on my exposed arms and face.
Panting heavily, I stopped after running for a good half hour, thinking it has been half an hour, I really couldn’t tell at this point. I took another look around, seeing all these green trees and wildflowers, knowing that I am totally lost.
“Okay, I’ve been reading too much about Japanese Isekai’s web novels lately. This has to be a joke.” I paced around in a circle, trying to understand what is happening right now. “I’m sure that I passed out in the office, and my coworkers pranked me.”
Grabbing my cheek with one hand, I felt pain as I pinched and pulled at my face. This is real. I don’t even know how I got here, not that it matters now. This is my new reality.
Stopping for a moment and seeing the forest that I may be residing now, is my new home. I have to pull my big girl pants, take this one step at time, and see if I have a status or something to help me out with my predicament.
Lifting my hands out, I closed my eyes and started to imagine a status window. “STATUS!” I yelled. A clear purple window popped up in front of me.
