The Silver Cradle

822 Words
Father Benedict's lifeless body lay on the monastery floor. The room was silent except for Aria's quiet sobs. She knelt beside the old priest, still holding his cold hand. "He was trying to tell us something," she whispered. "He knew the truth." Eleanor closed Father Benedict's eyes with trembling fingers. "He protected that secret for fifteen years." "And he died protecting it." Adrian stood by the shattered window, his expression dark. He looked at the bullet hole in the opposite wall. "The sniper knew exactly where Father Benedict would be standing." James Carter nodded grimly. "This wasn't luck." "It was an execution." --- Outside, Ethan raced through the dense forest. Broken branches and fresh footprints led him deeper into the trees. He followed them until he reached a narrow stream. The tracks suddenly disappeared. Ethan scanned the area. Too quiet. His instincts screamed that something was wrong. Just then, he heard the faint click of a trigger behind him. He spun around. A masked man stepped from behind a tree, aiming a pistol directly at Ethan. "You're persistent," the stranger said. Ethan raised his own weapon. "Drop the gun." The man laughed. "I don't think so." Before either of them could fire, smoke grenades exploded between them. Thick gray smoke swallowed the forest. Ethan coughed and covered his face. By the time the smoke cleared, the masked man had vanished. Only a small silver coin remained on the ground. On one side was the familiar lion-and-crown crest. On the other was a single engraved letter. V Ethan picked it up carefully. "Vivian..." he murmured. --- Back at the monastery, Adrian replayed Father Benedict's final words. "Find... the... silver... cradle... beneath..." "Beneath what?" Aria asked. "He never finished." James frowned. "Perhaps he meant beneath the chapel." Eleanor slowly looked toward the monastery garden. "No." "I remember something." Everyone turned to her. "When Aurora was born, my husband donated a handcrafted silver cradle to this monastery." "It was placed beneath the statue of Saint Gabriel during a dedication ceremony." Adrian's eyes widened. "If the cradle is still there..." "...it may contain whatever Father Benedict wanted us to find." Without wasting another second, they hurried outside. --- The statue of Saint Gabriel stood in the center of the monastery garden. Time had weathered its stone surface, but it remained magnificent. Flowers surrounded its base. James brushed away years of moss. "There." A narrow metal plate was hidden beneath the pedestal. Ethan returned from the forest just as Adrian pried it open. Inside was a small iron key. Nothing else. Aria looked disappointed. "Just a key?" Eleanor shook her head. "No." "Father Benedict wouldn't hide an ordinary key." James examined it closely. "The handle is engraved." He held it toward the light. Tiny letters became visible. Safety Deposit Box 217 "Kingsley National Bank." Adrian looked at James. "Call the bank." James's expression fell. "It closed an hour ago." "We'll be there first thing tomorrow morning." --- As the group prepared to leave the monastery, a young novice monk approached them nervously. "Excuse me..." Adrian turned. "Yes?" The monk held out an old envelope. "Father Benedict asked me to give you this." "When?" "If anything ever happened to him." Aria accepted the envelope with trembling hands. Her name was written across the front. She carefully opened it. Inside was a single handwritten note. «Dear Child, If you are reading this, then I have failed to protect the truth. Trust your heart, but trust very few people. The greatest danger is not outside the Kingsley family... It is already inside. Someone you greet with a smile each day has been lying for fifteen years. When the key reveals its secret, do not believe the first answer you find. The truth is buried beneath another lie. —Father Benedict» A chill settled over everyone. Someone inside the Kingsley family... Someone they saw every day... Had been hiding the truth all along. --- That evening, the convoy returned to the Kingsley Estate. The atmosphere was heavier than ever. The monastery had given them more questions than answers. As Aria walked toward the mansion, she noticed a figure standing on the balcony of the west wing. A woman dressed entirely in white. Long dark hair covered her face. She stood perfectly still, watching Aria. Aria blinked. The figure disappeared. "Did you see that?" she asked. "See what?" Ethan replied. "There was a woman..." He looked toward the balcony. No one was there. Adrian frowned. "The west wing has been sealed." "I know what I saw." Before anyone could investigate, James's phone rang. He answered immediately. His expression changed. "Mr. Adrian..." "What is it?" "The bank just called." Adrian looked surprised. "They're closed." "I know." "But someone broke into Safety Deposit Box 217..." "...less than thirty minutes ago." Everyone froze. Whoever was behind the conspiracy already knew about the key. And they had just stolen whatever had been hidden inside the box.
