The Empty Box

682 Words
The living room of the Kingsley Estate fell silent. James Carter slowly lowered his phone, his face pale. "They broke into Safety Deposit Box 217," he repeated. "And according to the bank manager..." "...they left the vault less than thirty minutes before the police arrived." Adrian clenched his fists. "How is that possible?" "The key has been hidden beneath the monastery for fifteen years." James nodded. "Exactly." "Which means one of two things." "They've been watching us..." "...or someone informed them." No one spoke. The suspicion hanging over the room was becoming impossible to ignore. There was a traitor. --- Early the next morning, Adrian, Ethan, Aria, and James arrived at Kingsley National Bank. The bank manager, Harold Mason, was already waiting at the entrance with two police detectives. "Mr. Kingsley," Harold said nervously. "I'm terribly sorry." "Show us the vault." The group followed him through a series of heavy steel doors until they reached the private safety deposit room. Box 217 had been forced open. Its lock lay broken on the floor. Adrian stared at the empty compartment. "So..." "We were too late." Harold cleared his throat. "Not exactly." Everyone turned toward him. "The thief emptied the box..." "...but they left something behind." He carefully placed a small velvet pouch on the table. Inside was a silver baby bracelet. Tiny engraved letters shimmered under the light. Baby A Aria's breath caught. "Baby... A?" Ethan gently picked up the bracelet. "If Aurora's name begins with 'A'..." James interrupted. "But so does Aria." Adrian examined the bracelet more closely. "It doesn't say Aurora." "It only says Baby A." "Which means..." "It could belong to either child." --- One of the detectives approached with a file. "We recovered security footage." "Can we see it?" Adrian asked. The detective nodded. A monitor flickered to life. The video showed a person dressed in a dark hooded coat entering the vault. Their face remained hidden beneath a cap. They unlocked the deposit box with surprising ease. Then they removed a thick envelope and disappeared. Just before leaving... The person looked directly at the security camera. Although most of the face remained hidden... A silver ring flashed beneath the light. The same lion-and-crown crest. Aria felt a chill. "I've seen that ring before." Everyone looked at her. "It was on one of the kidnappers." Ethan folded his arms. "So the same organization is behind both crimes." --- As they prepared to leave the bank, an elderly janitor approached Aria. "Miss." She turned. "Yes?" He glanced around nervously before speaking. "I shouldn't say anything..." "But I recognized that bracelet." "You did?" He nodded. "My wife worked in St. Catherine's maternity ward years ago." "She used to tell me..." "...that twins were always given matching bracelets." Aria's heart began to race. "There were two?" "Yes." "One bracelet marked Baby A." "The other..." He frowned, trying to remember. "...Baby E." Before Aria could ask another question, the old man suddenly gasped. His eyes widened. A red dot appeared on the center of his chest. Ethan reacted instantly. "DOWN!" A gunshot shattered the bank's glass entrance. The bullet struck the janitor before anyone could move. He collapsed into Aria's arms. People screamed and scattered across the lobby. "Find the shooter!" Adrian shouted. Security officers rushed outside. The sniper had already vanished. The elderly janitor coughed weakly. He grabbed Aria's sleeve with surprising strength. "There was..." Blood stained his lips. "...another name..." "What name?" Aria cried. He struggled to breathe. "The nurse..." "...her surname..." "...Vale..." His hand slipped away. He was gone. Silence consumed the lobby. Aria slowly looked toward Ethan. His face had turned completely white. "My surname..." Ethan whispered. "...is Vale." No one spoke. Was it merely a coincidence... Or had Ethan's family been connected to Aria's birth all along? Outside, hidden inside a parked black sedan, the mysterious mastermind watched the chaos unfold through tinted windows. A faint smile crossed his lips. "Excellent." He picked up his phone. "They've started suspecting Ethan." "Exactly as planned." He ended the call and drove away, leaving behind another trail of doubt and deception.
