Chapter 10
THE LOVE BLOOMING ON THE PAVEMENT'S CRACK
Today would be the first day. I was now wearing the white long sleeves and gray pleated skirt. I tied my necktie and put on my boots. Not bad. I loved their uniform. I tied my hair in a half ponytail and curled its ends. I took some strands on the front and curled it, too, letting it fall on the sides of my face.
We’re already in college, but why are we still wearing a uniform like a primary or secondary level?
I went down the living room and spotted my mom waiting for me in the couch. This time, she would drive me to my school because she wanted to see me off in a new university. We reached the parking lot in a short period of time. Cars entered the school, and our cars lined up to have a space in the parking lot. It was harder than what happened in the orientation. I would probably commute on the next day, so it would be less of a hassle, but then, mom could drive the car back unlike on the orientation when I only had myself that pushed me to find a parking space.
She maneuvered the car and dropped me on the entrance of a building. I kissed her cheeks. She patted my head. "Goodluck."
"Thanks, mom. If I don't find a vehicle to commute, I might ride with Seth."
"You might ride on Seth?"
My eyes widened. I laughed. "Those are two different things."
She chuckled, too. "I know, I know. See you."
I nodded and waited for her to leave the campus before entering the building. The students flocked on the plastic benches wearing their fitted uniform. It's good to see the hallway flooded by students looking like they united with two colors.
I searched for my locker and checked my schedule. Seth leaned on my locker's door. "What?" I can't help but laughed when he wiggled his brows at me. "Whats wrong with you?"
"Good morning."
"Good morning," I greeted back. He had this mischievous look all over his face. "Seriously?"
He showed me a paper. As I got to stare at it more, I understood what he meant.
"Oh, em gee!"
"Oh, em gee, girl!" he repeated with the same pitch. "I saw you picking a paper, and I thought that you could have chosen the voucher or the ticket. Then I realized you are not fond into breads or cakes, so I guessed you chose this ticket." His lips curved into a grin. "So? Do you want to go with me?"
I was still new in this place, still coping up with some changes, but I never expected to be this lucky that a man will come to me as if I'm some kind of metal, and he is the magnet. Seth was good ever since we met. He treated me like any other girls in our village, and I don't want to misinterpret his kindness as a sign of flirting. However, his simple act of remembering what I do not like made my heart leaped a few times inside my chest. I hoped my face didn't flush in red. I would not know how to handle the awkwardness if he realizes that I am starting to like him.
"Sure."
"Do you want me to fetch you?"
I wanted to prolong our conversation. I could tell him that we could talk about it next time, and what I wanted could happen. I just couldn't rush things if it is love that's waiting ahead.
I shook my head and smiled apologetically. "Maybe don't. I don't want my mom to think we're dating."
"Who knows if we might end up there?" He laughed. "Kidding."
Kidding, your face.
"But I will try to ask Maurice about that."
That's the answer I'm waiting for.
"Great. I'll go ahead?" I jerked my thumb on the other direction and walked away only to realize that I did a dumb mistake. I tilted my head and clenched my teeth, mentally scolding myself. I bit my lower lip and battled whether I should ask Seth if he knows my room or not, but this is an opportunity screaming right into my face. I wouldn't waste this time even though I know right exactly where the building is and where my exact room is. We still had time left to chat on our way to my room. That would be so romantic, and people would think that we're already dating.
Hey, it's just your Elysea, your new girl in town, dating a hot boy named Seth.
"Are you lost?" His breath hit my ear, and I shivered. I gathered my strength to not fall on my knees. "Do you want me to send you to your room?"
That would be my pleasure.
"Thanks, but no thanks. I can manage." I stopped after taking a few steps forward and ran back to him. "Help?" I asked nervously.
His sweet cackle messed up my system. "Let's go."
The attention I had from other students was similar when I was in our old school. Their eyes were glued on me like I was a superstar walking down the red carpet, but I remembered Seth was with me, so they were surely staring at this handsome man beside me. His image gave off a bad boy look, but his smile was of a good boy. The way his eyes turned small was cute. His quiff hairstyle was perfect for his brown hair and dark brown eyebrows. We talked about my experience in my former place.
"Why did you transfer?"
"Because my mom disliked the smoke. It's unhealthy for her."
"Yeah, but you could just stay there since you're nearly an adult. The experience living alone would be different."
"I thought about that, too, but I want to take care of my mom. Don't you like me here?" I joked, but he seemed to take it seriously.
"Not really. It's better that you came here because we met." He stopped and peeked on our room. "We're here."
He nodded at someone, but my mind flew together with his words. Was he deliberately flirting with me?
"Seah," he called.
"What?"
"You okay?"
"Yeah. What were you saying again?"
"We're here," he repeated. "Do you want me to go home with you? I saw Maurice leaving the gate with your car. That means you might have to contact her or take a cab to your home. It's a waste in your petrol."
I refused. "It's okay."
"I insist."
I sighed. "If you say so. My last class would end at 4."
"I would wait for you then."
I frowned. "Why?"
"Nevermind. Goodluck on your first day."
He gave me a smile before he left me on the hallway asking myself with the signs he showed me. I couldn't figure it out. It's hard to give a meaning unless I know him so well, and I don't. We only knew each other for weeks, and I realized he was always this kind. However, whenever he gave such double meaning statements, he always ended it with a smile like an innocent boy who doesn't know how he affects me.
I sat on my first class about Mathematics, a general education that should be taken by all courses. I wandered my eyes inside the room and found someone familiar, someone who I don't like to be in the same enclosed space with. I hadn't expected her to be in the same program with me for I didn't see her during the post-Orientation activity. Even just a glimpse of her shadow wasn't there on the hall. Was she sick?
Our eyes met each other. Her lips was nearly perfect, but I hated it with the way her mischievous smile brings creeps to my body. She bit her pen while smirking at me. I scoffed and avoided her gaze. If I was not patient if not to calm my raging blood for seeing her pathetic face, I would have already made a scratch to leave a wound she would not forget.
I hurriedly cleaned my desk. I checked if l had put all my belongings in my bag before leaving the room. Finally, and hopefully, I would not see her again, but everything doesn't want to work with me. Ayuna was on my next class again. I sighed. All I did was to wait for the class to be over.
I waited for the professor to leave the room when the class finally ended. Today was no big deal. They oriented us about our subject and what we might encounter on their class. They also explained the schedule and grading system. Fifty percent would be derived from our exams. The remaining fifty percent would be taken out from different components, mostly related to our class performance.
My mind was spacing out thinking where I could find Seth because he told me we're going home together. Ayuna and I exited on the door. We looked at each other. I rolled my eyes that earned a smirk from her.
"Hey."
My heart throbbed. I didn't notice Seth leaning on the wall in front of us. He nodded at Ayuna.
"Let's go?"
A question rose from the current scenario. Why is he fetching me and not his friend, Ayuna? They were closer than me.
"I will head to the Journalism Room." She kissed Seth on the cheeks. "Take care."
"Goodluck."
My eyes followed her until she disappeared from our sight. It took her a while to go downstairs because she was talking with everyone. Their gestures and skinship stated their closeness. Amazingly, Ayuna was good at interaction other than acting bitchy. I turned to Seth, and he was already looking at me!
"I realized you could just wait for Ayuna and send her to her house."
"Ayuna?" He shook his head while laughing. "No. She likes someone else."
I won't argue with a man about a woman's feelings. They were dumb when it comes to understanding how the words 'like' and 'love' go for us.
"She doesn't like the type to write a news," I said while we were walking to the parking lot.
What I said was pure honesty because Ayuna seemed to be the type of person to be seen on the headline of a newspaper with a scandalous title.
"She's the Editor-in-chief since primary school. Since the adviser of the journalism knew her capabilities, she was easily assigned to a position."
"Won't it be unfair for the others who were older than her?"
"Not if they voted for her. They wanted Ayuna to be the managing editor. Soon enough, we expected her to be the Editor-in-chief, too."
We reached the locker area. He did not ask permission to go on his locker, so I guessed I am the only one who needs to get my belongings that I left this morning. Before I opened the door, I shot another question.
"I didn't her on the Orientation. I was surprised to find out she was already in college."
"Ayuna got sick. She had a very high fever. Usually, she would still try to attend such, but I had to stop her."
A letter dropped on my foot from my locker. This was new. I couldn't believe it.
"An admirer?"
"I think so." The design said so. "Who would like me when I'm just new here? Come on, are they tripping on me?"
"A beautiful plant can always grow from the c***k in the pavement. What more in a garden?"
