The group stood in the dimly lit room, the glowing crystals casting an eerie light on their faces. The sound of drones and heavy footsteps echoed through the facility, growing louder with each passing second. Nicole clutched a crystal in her hand, its warmth seeping into her skin, as she glanced at Tatsuya.
“How much longer do we need?” she asked, her voice tight with urgency.
Tatsuya was crouched near a small, makeshift device he and Dex had been assembling. His hands moved quickly, connecting wires and adjusting components. “Almost… done. Need one more crystal.”
Dex, who was frantically scanning the room, spotted a crystal wedged into a crevice in the wall. “Got it!” he said, rushing over and prying it loose. He tossed it to Tatsuya, who caught it mid-air and slotted it into the device.
“Okay, that’s it,” Tatsuya said, standing up. “Device… ready. But we must leave. Now.”
Zara, who had been pacing near the door, shot him a glare. “Oh, really? I hadn’t noticed the army of killer drones outside. Thanks for the update.”
Nicole ignored Zara’s sarcasm, her focus on Tatsuya. “How do we get out of here? There’s no way we can fight those things.”
Tatsuya’s eyes flicked to the ceiling, where a rusted ventilation shaft was barely visible in the dim light. “There. We go up.”
Dex groaned, looking at the narrow shaft. “You’ve got to be kidding me. I’m not exactly built for tight spaces.”
“You’ll fit,” Nicole said, already climbing onto a nearby table to reach the shaft. “We don’t have a choice.”
Zara grabbed Dex’s arm, pulling him toward the table. “Come on, big guy. Time to channel your inner action hero.”
As Nicole pried the vent cover off, the door behind them shuddered under the weight of something slamming into it. The drones were close—too close. Tatsuya helped Nicole into the shaft, then turned to Zara and Dex.
“Go. I’ll follow,” he said, his voice calm but firm.
Zara hesitated, her eyes narrowing. “You’d better not be planning some noble sacrifice. I’m not carrying you out of here.”
Tatsuya almost smiled. “No sacrifice. Just… go.”
Zara and Dex scrambled into the shaft, their movements hurried but efficient. As Tatsuya climbed in after them, the door burst open, and a swarm of drones flooded the room. The group didn’t look back, crawling as fast as they could through the narrow passage.

In the Ventilation Shaft
The air in the shaft was thick with dust, and the metal groaned under their weight. Nicole led the way, her flashlight casting shaky beams of light ahead of them.
“This is officially the worst idea we’ve ever had,” Zara muttered, her voice muffled by the tight space. “And that’s saying something.”
“Hey, at least we’re not getting shot at,” Dex replied, his voice strained as he squeezed through a particularly narrow section.
“Yet,” Zara shot back. “Give it time.”
Nicole glanced over her shoulder, her face pale but determined. “Can we focus, please? We need to find a way out before those drones figure out where we went.”
Tatsuya, who was bringing up the rear, spoke up. “Left… up ahead. Leads outside.”
Nicole nodded, crawling faster. After a few minutes, they reached a junction in the shaft. Nicole hesitated, looking at the two paths. “Which way?”
Tatsuya pointed to the left. “There. But… be careful. Ground unstable.”
Zara groaned. “Of course it is. Why wouldn’t it be?”
The group turned left, crawling until they reached a grate that led outside. Nicole pushed it open, and the cool night air rushed in, a welcome relief after the stifling heat of the shaft. One by one, they climbed out, collapsing onto the grass outside the facility.

Outside The Facility
Nicole took a deep breath, her heart still racing. “We made it.”
“Barely,” Zara said, brushing dust off her clothes. “Next time, can we pick a less life-threatening plan? Maybe something involving, I don’t know, a library?”
Dex laughed, though it was more out of relief than humor. “Hey, we got the crystals. That’s what matters, right?”
Tatsuya nodded, holding up the device. “Yes. Now… we build. Fix realities.”
Nicole looked at him, her expression softening. “Thank you, Tatsuya. For everything.”
Before Tatsuya could respond, a loud crash echoed from inside the facility. The group turned to see the drones breaking through the walls, their sensors scanning the area.
“Uh… guys?” Dex said, his voice rising in panic. “They’re coming!”
“Run!” Nicole shouted, grabbing Tatsuya’s hand and pulling him toward the trees.
The group sprinted into the forest, the drones close behind. Zara glanced over her shoulder, her eyes wide. “Why are they still following us? Don’t they have, like, a range limit or something?”
“Apparently not!” Dex yelled, dodging a low-hanging branch.
As they ran, Tatsuya suddenly stopped, turning to face the drones. “Go! I’ll… hold them.”
Nicole grabbed his arm, her voice fierce. “No! We’re not leaving you!”
Tatsuya met her gaze, his expression resolute. “Must protect you. Go!”
Before Nicole could argue, Zara grabbed her arm, pulling her away. “He’s right, Nic. We can’t help him if we’re dead!”
Nicole hesitated, her heart breaking as she looked at Tatsuya. “Promise me you’ll come back.”
Tatsuya nodded, his eyes filled with determination. “Promise.”
As the group disappeared into the trees, Tatsuya turned to face the drones, the device in his hand glowing brighter with each passing second. He took a deep breath, then activated it, sending a pulse of energy that knocked the drones off course.

In the Forest
Nicole, Zara, and Dex ran until they could no longer hear the drones. They collapsed onto the forest floor, their breaths coming in ragged gasps.
“Do you think he’s okay?” Nicole asked, her voice trembling.
Zara placed a hand on her shoulder. “He’s tough, Nic. If anyone can handle those things, it’s him.”
Dex nodded, though his face was pale. “Yeah. And we’ve got the crystals. We’ll finish the device and fix this mess.”
Nicole looked back in the direction they had come, her heart aching. “I just hope he’s right about us being connected. Because I can’t lose him. Not now.”
Zara squeezed her shoulder. “You won’t. We’ll figure this out. Together.”
